big thanks to Steelies engineering ltd. Got one of my front wheel bearings done today with the help of a manu, a press and lots of headscratching and bits of steel. Will be good to cruise without the nagging neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise. Packing stuff tonight baking cookies. then a quick carwash and I'll be good to go! -
yeah it's UJ. So yeah maybe an earth wire has come off the steering rack. I should take a look.
-
Yeah if I earth the thing it honks. Anyway I came up with a solution. Rangi as, cause that's the only way I know how. Drilled a small hole in the outer column, pushed in a spring from a bic pen, and covered it with electrical tape. Seems to work, we'll see how long it holds up for.
-
but.. but.. that's not half as satisfying as slamming your fist on the wheel when another driver does something dumb!
-
Yeah there is but that only connects the horn's earth lead to the horn button. The horn button is supposed to get earthed from the steering wheel when you press it. Only there no earth at the steering column/wheel. Spare column was earthed, but only because the top rubber bush was missing. So don't really want to use that
-
Actually.. I have a spare steering column. I'll try that.
-
Hmm can't see anything obvious in there.. Any other ideas?
-
Haven't been able to get my horn working properly for a while now, just intermittently. Have traced it (I think) to an earthing problem in the steering column. The horn button is supposed to close and earth the horn, which gets a constant 12v. Problem is, the steering column doesn't seen to be earthed. The exterior of the column is earthed just fine, but the actual rod inside that the steering wheel attaches to isn't. How is this normally done in an 80s Japanese car?

hutt valley tires was really good for me to deal with - charged $10 per wheel to fit and balance. Owner seemed like a GC

i need to test my CB rig. Crushed the aerial lead a few times in the door hinge, so I'm not sure if it's still ok. -

Got the 12" ROH Contessas powdercoated and slapped some new tires on them. Powdercoating colour was supposed to be silver, but came out a light grey. Very happy with the result. Went with Linglong Greenmax in the end. Nice and cheap. Will have to see how they perform in the wet. -

So, a while back (about 7 years ago now) I was doing some handbrake drifting in a rainy Mt Albert Pak n Save carpark. I was a little too enthusiastic approaching the last corner and hit the curb sideways with a my rear left wheel. I bent the steel rim pretty severely but managed to limp home down the road. I replaced the wheels and assessed the damage. The hub seemed ok - car still felt OK to drive and the wheel bearings seemed OK. The incident then faded from memory until recently when Treggo pointed out how much positive camber the left rear wheel had compared to the other wheels. It dawned on me that I had in fact bent the solid rear axle a little. (and, err.. driven it like that for seven years.) Can't really make it out in this picture but it's all cocked. So anyway, managed to get hold of a spare rear axle and fitted it last night. Now I have nice straight wheels and the same amount of gap between wheel and wheel arch on both wheels. Bendy axle: -
