  1. Sweet- i'll have a look at the build plate. So the lsd bit fits inside the crown gear and is swapped like for like? Apart from once changing a pinion oil seal on our old beford tk I have no experience with the inner gubbins on diffs. If they dont make a noise and have good oil in them I sort of leave em alone so this is all new shit to me. How is a locker diff activated Cam?
  2. south westland. cant quite remember- not far from hari hari.
  3. Our van is pretty good off road for what it is- but the first thing that lets it down when things get slippery is the back axle. Its very easy to get a wheel spinning. I would love to fit a Lsd but I have heard that its hard to locate them for early hiaces? I would have to keep it the same ratio as the front right to prevent windup on harder surfaces. Where could I find out what ratio is in the diff is in the axle- are there any really good toyota 4wd specialists I could try. From what I know the Hiace axle is narrower than a hi lux one- or the other way round- either way I dont think its a straight swap in?
  4. Cool- I think I might have a period road test on one of these. I'll look about and scan it if so. The inner wings look pretty solid for a UK Jap car.
  5. He'll be using it to tarmac drives, steal lead from roofs and generally nick things from local shops.
  6. The old van has been running sooooo well. Now with a heater its fantastic and cosy on long trips. We thought it deserved a treat so while I fettled with the Viva today Hannah sanded the Hiace back. She had stripped it all down yesterday. Time for a fresh colour ;D.... Its a rough as paint job just using enamel. The original paint is all cracked everywhere so the new coat is more a about protection. My first coats were a touch heavy and unfortunately lots of runs in places.
  7. Not a big update for now but just happy to post up that after almost 2 months since the car was last started I got back to my olds in Blenheim and finally started to do some more work on the Viva. I blew the dust off the car and thought I'd try to start it. The battery is a bit shit..in fact I cant even remember where I got it from. I checked its voltage, it was showing 12.5 and I thought nah that wont be enough. Flicked the pump on, pulled the choke out and gave it a whirr. Vrrrrrooooooommmmmm!!! Yes! Coolio. Oh and the coolant level in the radiator was full which is great news too! I have found a tiny vacuum leak where the brake master meets the servo which could be enough to muck up the mixture. Now sealed. The car is now up in the air as I have the top wish bones removed in order to modify the adjustable camber for the top ball joints. Currently it has two positions which are either too much or too little negative camber. I've now slotted them so I can fine tune the camber. I'll put some photos up of the mod later. I have also very carefully and precisely 'adjusted the lips' on my front wheel arches with my professional adjustment tool... Now I wont be slicing my tyres.
  8. Cool- I'll tidy it up and make it look stock, then hide it. I agree to about vids of skids. I have always been tempted in the UK of the many many cheap FDs there. People buy them then sell em after the first fill up, or after struggling to find someone prepared to work on them..."ewww- its got one of the odd rotary things in it- no sir,, we don't work on them"
  9. Bugger- because my Viva has been 'opened' out slightly to fit bigger speakers at some point- maybe 20mm bigger dia over the original holes? I have made a new parcel shelf to hide it. Hopefully they dont go looking up inside boot - no reason why they should as the car has no stereo.
  10. Loose wiring under the dash is a fail for a wof? Like how loose? hanging down around your feet or just a bit loose and messy? I think it must have been a quiet day when you took it for a test! Is it also true that cars can fail if the rear parcel shelf has been cut to fit speakers? crazy.
  11. so sweet. Lovely cars. Just lovely. I like that grill....
  12. You sir, are now owed many big hugs, beer, cake etc. I didn't see this reply till just now as we are back in Blenheim for the weekend and now finally can properly catch up on nerdnet surfing. Mum said "there's a package for you on the bed". I wondered what the hell it could be? Opened it up and man- xmas is early!!! I didn't know who had sent it as there was no sender details but guessed it may have been you. WOW- man I am gonna have a great time just reading them through like a good novel. Thank you so very much, you know I've been searching for ages to find any manuals for our truck. Bloody awesome!
  13. Steels with extra girth always rule. TR6 wheels please. Oh- and that above photo looks lovely but doesn't that radiator look so small in a TR6 against all that engine!?
  14. bugger not having internet at home! I didn't even know of this till bart rang me this morning. Cheers anyway for the heads up. Will endeavor to get viva cert'd and on the road for the next event like this! The inland road is indeed a fantastic drive!
  15. I am very very very jealous! Why you lucky bugger. That is so cool. I too would just leave it as it is, keep it running sweet and use it everyday. Keep the updates coming please!
  16. Same colour as my first 2500. French blue. Just perfect!
  17. can you do a in car video for us not blessed with triple webers.
  18. yeah-hopefully it works out. Biggest problem is lack of available capital. We have savings but thats for a deposit on land one day. At least for now our living costs are so bloody low that we dont have to stress out. And that its sunny. Typical is that first day starting on a job for someone and my usually rock solid back has gave out. I'm limping about like am old man. Hannah's doing all the lifting. Its now coffee time:-)
  19. Yeah I think i have been spoiled by 20 months of working for ourselves, waking up when we want. I have been telling prospective employers that I can only work Tuesday to friday. Funny enough they dont like it.... The other thing I love is the idea of siestas. Like many European countries etc. Stop work at 12 and start again sometimes as late as 4. Hated it when I was there but then got into it. Riding my bike midday. Tis sweet. The early starts are fine with this too. Must buy a lotto ticket....
  20. Cheers man. Not quite the dream yet. No cats in our truck and not yet owning a Ferrari Dino 246. But It'll do for now. Just done an update now Cam.
  21. OK then. heres a late update. Not much really as far as work on the truck goes. Its working fine as both a house and a truck. We drove it over to Nelson 3 weeks ago. Nelson is now our new home. It went drove so well and was such a buzz. I loved it. very cruisy and much better up and over the hills than I thought it would be! It cost us $50 to move our entire house from Blenheim to Nelson. Sweet! Hannah followed in the old toymota hiace. We stayed at Pelorus bridge halfway to Nelson and woke to the sound of many bellbirds etc. That was cool. The exhaust brake was bloody handy on the way down the hills. Not many photos really. In fact I only took one photo of it on the way but Hannah took some video of it as she followed. Heres a link to the a youtube clip of truck going over the Whangamoa saddle... Now we are settled in Nelson and have a most awesome campspot. Surrounded by native bush with a bird sanctuary as well. Loads of cool birds and birdsong and nothing else but the creek 4 meters from our back door. We have made a little path down to the creek with river stiones and will make a BBQ area. As the truck is all finished its been time to start looking for work. Been looking at going back to trade work as a fitter turner and there is plenty to pick from but I'm not at all into the whole 7am start thing!!!. I want to work to live not live to work. So we are starting a little workshop ourselves doing anything. Hopefully it works out. As a back up I'll have some bikeshop work to do over summer which is cool. I need to be able to get bike stuff at trade rates because man its been an expensive shock to pay retail! Since we have 14 bikes (and growing) it'll be nice to pay trade for parts again. We have no internet where we are- not even a signal. So its the library or my brothers house for us. Hence very little of me on any forum over past few weeks. But man do we have some cool biking and tramping on our back door. From the truck its a 2 minute walk to the most amazing walking track I done in ages. It takes us right up into proper ancient forest with some massive trees. And loads of wicked mountain bike tracks start right near us. So while we have not been working we have both been playing loads! I love it here We have the sun till 4pm but in summer we'll have it all day. Nelmac (the nelson council team) have supplied us loads of firewood which is sweet too. Nights have been chilly with all the clear weather we have had the last 3 weeks. Views from up our valley- truck is parked right down at the bottom. Up near top of the valley there are wicked swimming holes. This one is 1 hours walk away and so peaceful. I get some photos of the truck parked up soon. Alex
  22. Fuck yeah! good work man. I cant wait to hear a vid of this racing by!
  23. "but the would pour into existing ones with nolathane for 75 each plus gst. " What do you mean pour? Did they make moulds from your old ones? I need to do my bushes..one day...when I have a job...and money.
  24. Sweet cheers man. No hurry now..I fixed up my rim yesterday- it had rusted through and a spoke pulled through. Its a hard to get rod brake rim so I welded a washer on the inside and its all good now! sweet. I love my old bike and I hope I can get work in Nelson within a close enough distance so I can just ride that bike rather than my road bike.
