    Modding 3A-U

My mates forums... http://club3a.snachez.net/viewtopic.php?t=13 They know quite a bit about the old 3A's. He hasnt covered everything but he most likely knows the answers to all your questions. Enjoy.

    head gaskets

I've never heard of re-tightening gaskets I havent checked my head bolts since I tightened them with the torque wrench when I put the head back on...
  3. Well when I got my last warrant, the guy sez, "what did you do to the engine", and I replied, "me and dad were going to recondition the old 1300, but it was beyond repair so we had to replace it with this 1600". He didnt ask if it was cert'd or do any extra checks, so I thought it was sweet. With all this new stuff, especially what kyteler said about insurance not paying out, I really want to get it certed, but cant afford it at the moment. So I guess I gotta just drive safely and hope for the best. If I do get pulled over, I hope its by some old cop who used to have an escort when he was younger, lol, its happened before... "Escort aye, yea I used to own a 2dr version of yours... put a weber carb and extractors on it and she went just as well as all my mates V8's... that was back when you could get a gallon of petrol for 70c..." Lol, that was one friendly cop
  4. Exactly! how are they gonna know that I've got a new engine? It looks just the same as a 1300. The only reason I would have to get a cert is for replacing my 1300 with a 1600, and aslong as Im not being a dick and speeding/doing dangerous shit in my car, then I reckon I'll be safe without one.
  5. Your 70's would be just as high as Jerms 60's... I'd check things like your alignment and your guards first, are you sure its rubbing and that its rubbing where you think it is?
  6. 1600's are an inch taller above the waterpump, not above the thermostat housing, check in his picture - angle 2 - it looks like a 1600 to me, is kinda hard to tell in these pictures though.
  7. Ive got 155/78/R13's and I dont get any rub, I do get horrible tyre roll while Im drifting though But guess what, I just won the auction I was bidding on so soon I can say I have 175/70/R13's, not the best but hell of alot better than my current balloon wheels.
  8. Lol know how that feels... I had my engine out and I was sitting in the engine bay for about an hour pulling at the heater hoses going into the firewall, they werent coming out, so I gave up and just covered them in silicone hoping they werent going to leak. Hope they dont
  9. Looks sweet man, tidy engine bay. Hope you used high temp paint, I used high temp ford dark blue colour but its so dark you can hardly see it... apart from my thermostat housing
  10. Yea I never would of thought of using a scanner, I dont have one but I can easily borrow one sometime... Its probably one of the things I'll never get around to doing though dammit
  11. I concluded its coming in around my windscreen rubber.
  12. Sweet I might give that a go
  13. When I got my new engine awhile back, the dude had some nice 8mm leads with it (being a mechanic he coulda swiped them off anything) . Anyway as you can see in the pic below, they are about 4inches too long, I dont know much about leads, but is it bad to have them this long?
  14. Taking it apart is easy, Ive done that heaps, I was meaning the hard bit would be painting the actual gauge without ruining the numbers, or in my case, putting new numbers on after I'd painted it white
  15. I always thought the balck was hard to see at night and was thinking about doing it white. If I did it white I'd have 3 problems; a) I'd be a ricer I know I'd screw it up c) Painting it is kinda going against my whole "keeping it original idea" Red would look cool though.
  16. Yea how come you say that?
  17. Did people see these on trademe? http://trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts/Accessories/auction-14771039.htm Convenient time for some to pop up...
  18. This was the first thing I did when I got my escort, feels like a long time ago now. I know that I had the one with the big fuel an temp gauges on the left where the tacho is on the sport cluster, so I swapped them but then found that the wires didnt line up. I had to trace all the wires back to see what they did before I re-ordered them. As for the small loom, that came with the cluster when I bought it. One thing that is annoying when you do this, the new fuel gauge is about half the size of the old one, so it wont read correctly. I fill up my tank and the needle rises up off the gauge and then when I get down to about half a tank it falls onto the scale, from there on it drops really quick so make sure you dont run outa gas Yea just look at the old loom and write down what colour wire does what, and then line it up with the new cluster and see what needs changing... Hope that made some kind of sense
  19. I got an original pamphlet advertising all the optional extras available to get with your new escort, boot release is one of them lol, one that I didnt get.

You shouldnt have any problems, I used my 1300 engine mounts when I put my 1600 in

My Weber had the same number of pipes going into it. Except there was an extra one on the manifold, but that was blocked off anyway. Only thing that gave me trouble with upgrading the carb and manifold was the bracket for the accellerator cable. The bit on the manifold where you bolt on the bracket was lower and at a different angle, so the accellerator didnt work. I jimmy'd up a new bracket using some scrap metal and now it lines up just as good as the original. Not sure if you'll get this problem, depends on the intake manifold you use i guess.
  22. oh yea, and i dont know if you guys do it or not, but a little trick ma daddy taught me, when measuring clearances using feeler gauges, go one bigger an one smaller, that way is more accurate. ie the bigger one wont fit under but the smaller one will

Yea haynes manuals are the shit You shouldnt have any problems. Any parts you will need you'll be able to source from your 1300, these engines are so interchangable its not funny.
