  1. Had someone turn up yesterday asking if it or the avenger are for sale. Not a chance.
  2. Lets not go there, lol, well aware of the potential can only afford to build 1 screaming 4 pot- the type 9's earmarked for avenger. Probably easier/cheaper to recycle my 2L telstar donk with a rwd ute box behind it for the escort IF i get carried away with a conversion.
  3. In here you all can crucify or praise me for my choice of such a pedestrian form of transport. 2 of my kids love it, no. 3 has a diseased bias towards GMH . Apparently there's no cure for that. Slept on it last night, i'll keep it for a while but the search is on for an avenger wagon, showing my bias now.
  4. Here it is, latest addition-owned it a week, the most money i've EVER spent buying a car. Why? cos i'm an idiot & was looking for something old school & tidy that didn't need rebuilt......... & the avenger's getting tattier AND I STILL CAN'T FIND THE BLOODY CRANK WE NEED FOR IT'S NEW MOTOR!!!!!!! Crap picture, take more tomorrow- the others are too big to upload. Anyway, it's the budget model- 1300 automatic, it's straight outside & really tidy inside, now the tyres have been pumped up it's a little less pathetic to steer. That about covers the good bits (cept the auto bit) The work that needs doing; sort engine over heating had a new w.o.f when i got it - tail lights dont work! service the autobox- oils black & sluggish gear changes surely theres more power in there somewhere, it'll crack 100kph JUST!!!!. can't see it handling a club run in the country yet looks like exhaust needs a bit of sorting too Theres no plans to modify it much at all ( unless i can't live with the slushbox then i'll get a manual for it). Theres been some talk of engine swops, but the avenger's gunna supply the horsepower fix & handling wise it's the better car of the 2
  5. If i'm not tied up with stuff i'm supposed to do sounds a good excuse to tie it in with another parts hunting road trip.
  6. Back in my mini days was in Nelson for holidays & ended up having only enough money for two tanks of fuel to get back to Invers. 1000km. only @ 5 gal tank (22.5 L) 40+ psi in the tyres & cruising @ 70- 80ks where possible,@ 100ks when needing to- til Balclutha then sunk the boot in coz I'd worked out had more than enough to get home from there.
  7. Good use for a spare grille badge Got me a much better wheel & had no need for the horn button in the centre
  8. Got bored 1 day & cut up a perfectly good sierra box Sent it away to be glued together & it now looks like this find some time to reassemble it, find the other bits the box came with & drop out the old box & make this fit. Apparently i've tracked down a crank- we shall see.......
  9. The reason i didn't stay long out there- finish building this for daughters birthday-
  10. Been there, seen that- nothing i need for a broken avenger. Maybe i stop lending out the bomb, keeps coming back broken, driveshaft u-joint letting go. Saw a couple of the oldschool cars there
  11. Lol, thats my scarfie daughter burning through the full tank of petrol it started with on tuesday, apparently i get it back sometime on saturday.
  12. Not long enough dammit, time for about 1 quick lap around then get home to build & ice a cake for daughters birthday party later. & I'm expressly FORBIDDEN to detour home via teretonga
  13. I'm allowed out for a quick look @ 10ish so long as i can find where the avenger has got to on saturday
  14. Gearbox is away gettin welded after i cut it up the other day, should be back after easter. Should make a difference on the longer runs north, still be stuck with the 2nd gear crawl up the kilmog. Wornout old lump still revs easily but the torque does a disappearing act past @ 3500-4000. Got offered a 4AGZE last weekend- tempting......., x race donk standard internals could push a starlet to its limiter @ 140 mph 1/2 way down teretongas main straight, it was bloody quick. Except for the scarcity of the 2Y crank i think rebuilding the old iron lump will be cheaper.......
  15. So much for bright ideas, still cant find the crank i need.. Crank i've got is 3y- 2y works out better as we dont have to grind chunks out've the block for clearance. Sissy option is just toss in any random lump that'll fit in the hole, tempting as that is we still keen to go the hard way. drivers side rear wheel arch is gunna get pushed out next week to repair some ancient damage by the 1st owner, wheel rubbing when too many in car
  16. I like that, cant see mine putting out quite that much though. & haven't worked out a cheap ohv/ twincam conversion yet- bore spacing on the spare fe telstar head didnt quite line up diff sounds like a knobbly mountain bike tyre when going slow, lol
  17. Theres 3 or 4 snipes in a paddock south of dunedin near henley, & hunters, imps, commer vans & a mayflower i think. most of them have been there for 30+ years. Cant be seen from main road, regretfully no longer for sale..... too many tyre kickers in the past just full of hot air & not returning
  18. O yay........ finally get motor to behave & be docile round town ( i hope), now it sounds like i've got some new tunes from the diff. Only got the last tuneless drone fixed last month- wheel bearings. Holidays start tomorrow guess i'll be raiding the spare shell soon & see what kind of surprise lurks under its bum.
  19. Dunno yet, the guy i got the kelford cam from reckons its a bit hairy for road use not much good round town. We'll give a whirl & see how it goes. Its an f 12 grind i think At the moment we're figuring out what rod/piston combos will work with the bigger stroke
  20. I got this recently as the avenger is slightly less capable offroad getting to some of my fishing spots. Someone elses project they gave up on, was complete when i picked it up- drove it home- plans are to fix couple of rusty spots & repaint. Slowly getting there in between all the other stuff that needs doing, its a 1600 with column shift, memory lane stuff & the kids are keen to drive something so 'vintage'. Most of my photos of it are too big to upload & im still getting the hang of what i can do with this laptop
  21. Hi Joker, yep thats me, was only going to be a tweak up of a spare motor, but........... we figured that if we're gonna build a motor up then lets give it some grunt- theres a bit of knowledge down here from a few x race/rally guys on what we could do, the word turbo was mentioned at 1 stage but the discovery of the toyota crank being a viable route to stretching the capacity we're running with that option, sourcing a suitable gt head & kelford cam helps too. The sierra box has a skip brown bellhousing & come with pretty much everything needed to fit it but the extension housing hasn't been cut yet, the car it came out of had a hole cut for the gear lever otherwise it'd be in. Scored it from trademe a while ago from waiheke island. Where am i going with it? Aiming for a fast road car that can hold it's own at teretonga at a track day & gymkhana/sprint & hillclimb it occassionaly
  22. lol, when you see it there that means daughter has swiped it again- she'd rather drive that than her mums camry. I've got 3 grills that i can use to make 1 good 1, stuff like that is less of a priority compared to new shocks just fitted for last weeks w.o.f & sorting bits for the make over, ie sierra 5 speed with an aftermarket bellhousing, scored a kelford cam, gt head, twin strombergs, new exhaust from the block back, updating the seatbelts to retractables in the front, the back retractables need a cert, fixing dents/upholstery etc- then theres the biggest bitch of a job- getting the heater to NOT squeal when the fan starts rubbing somewhere at higher speeds/head winds. Next years goal is to paint it, we're still debating colour partly cos im sticking with the original red interior cos its still tidy, so it might stay white
  23. Hi, here you all can discuss my 'efforts' to turn an old mans only car into something respectable. Plans are to make it move faster than a lethargic snail & look good doing it. Engines under way slowly, bored & stroked avenger motor is the plan- yea could've gone jap, lots of options there but thats easy, like the idea of it all looking period to confuse people when they want to know how it goes so fast
