  1. Anyone going to this? I'll be going sometime in the morning after voting stuff is done.
  2. When I eventually run out of spare engine parts I might look into an engine swap. It's been done many times. R100 had one on here at while back. Would certainly give other cars a fright at the lights! The engine itself is fine now and my old gearbox was smooth so should be A++ after combining these two! Need to get it running good by the end of the year when I take it to Auckland.. Edit: you can even buy a bolt in subframe replacement for one to stick a vtec in it: http://www.superfastminis.com/MTB-AA.htm
  3. Haha yeah! I think I have it sorted, water was coming in around the heater pipe and small rust hole near the top of the bulkhead. The quarter light windows leak but only when it's being washed, not in rain.
  4. Decided that while it's off the road during the gearbox rebuild I'd make the inside a nicer place to be. When I first got the car I attempted to dye the original gross faded carpets blue again with some dye that you mix up in a salt water solution. Worse idea ever! It worked okay for a while then the carpet just fell apart even more and I noticed that the salt in it had made everything on the floor rust. This is the bottom of my amplifier 2014-09-13 20.52.09 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr And the seat mounts. Cleaned and painted all these up including the bottom of the seats and the seatbelt components. 2014-09-13 18.14.19 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr Because the carpet fell apart it meant that my feet were just on the metal floor which I did paint right at the start but it came off and combined with the water from the leaky door seals it started to rust the floor pan again. So I stripped that back and painted it again with several layers of decent paint this time. I bought a bunch of carpet from Bunnings ($25 per m of 2m wide) 2014-09-14 17.37.22 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr (Can just see the corner of the OG carpet there) Found all the sound deadening and then cut the carpet up to fit nicely! Was a bit difficult sorting the corners out but it looks really good for about $60 of materials compared to $280 for some precut stuff for this car. 2014-09-14 16.33.43 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr The finished result: IMG_2575 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr IMG_2577 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr Let me know what you think!
  5. I got mine from Australia but I wish I knew about that crowed Corbie just posted, they're about $20 cheaper than what I bought. Will definitely be going there next time.
  6. Mad jdm yo'. Haha cheers man, appreciate it.
  7. Would have loved to attend but was too busy fixing the reliable british car. Was there much in the swapmeet part? Last year I scored a sweet auto repair manual and a motorbike toolkit for $1.50

  9. Took the engine out and split the casings to see what had happened. Familiar sight... The spider gear pin in the diff had moved sideways because a retaining pin was missing and caught on something and snapped it in half, then the piece that broke off was flying around in there looking for a way to get out. Surprised I didn't hear it. Cracked the diff casing and the edge of the gearbox casing. Fell apart in my hand when I touched it. The engine itself looks alright though, don't think any of the metal filings went further than the gearbox case. Was hoping it would be a straight forward swap of my other gearbox but the gears inside don't look the best to will use the good parts from both to make a decent gearbox. But before all this happened the car has been running great and being used for daily duties. Talk about it
  10. All out now and split the casings. It was the spider gear pin that had snapped in half and started floating around in there. Will post pictures later
  11. Swapping over my spare diff and g/box today! Bit annoyed that I lost 5L of near new oil
  12. Haha, seems like everyone has experiences with these when they're young
  13. Those wires are incredible. Nice photos too!
  14. If you're driving down Bealey Ave / Papanui Road in Christchurch today my apologies for the huge trail of oil... The diff decided some parts were better off outside of it's casing. Not really sure what/why happened yet. It's strange though because it made a loud clunk (I assumed it was just Chch's roads) and continued driving fine but then I noticed the oil pressure light come on so stopped. Will have to take the motor out and split the block and gearbox. Luckily I have a spare gearbox but it's a pain
  15. Cheers! P.S Put comments in the discussion thread next time
  16. What he ^ said. Happened to me at the super market once. Had to use a screw driver to short it and start it.
  17. Move from one Alfa to another http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/parts-other-makes/other/auction-764330511.htm
  18. Have these too
  19. Been dailying this everyday and it runs perfect. Doesn't get hot even at at 110km/h for a decent amount of time or just idling through traffic. The WOF ran out a couple of weeks ago so went to get a new one - straight through no worries. Inspector told me that I should start thinking about sorting the sill rust out sometime soon. I think Bornloser has some spares for me that K-trips sent down, must go get them at some point. Anyway yesterday as I pulled up the drive put my foot on the brake it went to the floor followed by the sound of liquid squirting out. Luckily the handbrake works well (on wet cul-de-sacs too ) The Repco brake light pressure sender that I bought 6 months ago for the last WOF had burst! IMG_9152 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr Went there today and got my money back but not impressed, a warning to those buying from Repco.. If that had happened at speed it wouldn't have been good. IMG_9154 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr All fixed now though. Nice new British made one from Butler Automart. IMG_9165 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr Changed the oil and filter tonight since it was due after the engine rebuild. Old oil looked clean so that's good! Discuss
  20. Most information about a person is a good one. Old bills etc behind glove boxes
  21. Finished the build and install of my original engine on Sunday. Took it for a decent drive today and it was perfect, just like a new car. Few pictures of the saga: This was stuck in one of the water galleries of my og engine! Surprised it stayed as cool as it did IMG_1668 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr And this is the sump plug of the smokey engine I'd been using for the past few months. Bits of 2nd gear I think IMG_2463 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr So the whole point of this rebuild was to fix this: (Watch the whole thing)Here's a timelapse of the final stages of the rebuild and install: And to finish here's a photo of it during the drive today. Excuse the jacked up height, made it easier to work on/get jacks under Untitled_Panorama1 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr
  22. Haha cheers. Bit older now and couldn't do it without Dad's help! I can't remember what it's called will check in the morning, it's just a Repco special
  23. Um different for each shot. Between 2 seconds for quick things like the final torquing of bolts and 10 seconds longer like piston assembly. Wasn't quite this detailed:
  24. Started the (re)rebuild of the original engine this weekend. Experimenting with Time-lapse photography so made a quick wee video of the start of it. Hoping next weekend to pull the other engine and swap all the bits over to the new one (starter motor etc) Discuss
  25. Came across this, reminded me of yours
