Popular Post kpr
Made an exhaust today. Couldn't decided what to do with it after this point. was going to do a side exit or something. but sounded horrible (drone) anyway, which wasn't very surprising. so.. Cut it up and started again. finish's at rear diff somewhere. its all straight through 3" but is quiet. till it hits boost, then i swap my farmer flat cap for a flat peak, as the wastie opens Also got the power steering working. Using a 4age pump and the surf steering box, the surf lines/fitting even fitted the 4age pump. Was unsure how well they were going to work together, but seems to be good so far. Can actually turn when in 4wd now! Current mess: Edit: this is the rad/fan setup. skyline radiator i think it was. with ford mondeo fans, they crank way harder than those aftermarket junk ones.
kpr
So, a few hours ago i got a sudden urge to sabre saw the back of the truck. 540mm to be exact Still going to make a whole new deck at some stage. as needs to go on a diet bad. but for the moment everything that doesn't need to be there is getting cut off. at least it fits in the shed better now.

Popular Post kpr
was sucking some crazy hot air with bonnet back on, so air box jumped to top of the list. couldn't find much to make an airbox from when sifting though all my crap, other than stock air box. it was far from fitting and way too restrictive, so as usual, cut it up was a bit of a dick to get it to fit, as running out of room in engine bay. (yeah yeah i don't know how that happened ) plus bonnet did not want to close
Popular Post kpr
Took this for its first test run today. other than like driving a shopping trolley over boulders motivated by a kid with a.d.d (throttle bit touchy and suspension way to hard) and fuel pump relay having a mare. went pretty good we tried to find some mud, but just found bottomless swamps. lost the safari a couple of times
Popular Post kpr
Have made a few changes, to fix some issues after the above day ^ First being the throttle issue, moved pivot point on the throttle up 40mm to give it more travel. also dialed in some transient retard into the tune, in low-med revs. which retards some timing when throttle is stabbed.(its usually used to prevent knock) effectively making it a bit more lazy when bumping the throttle. still need to put in a harder throttle spring as its super light. but is alot better than it was Number 2 problem was the suspension & tyres. had 12psi in tyres, were still hard as shit. let them down to 8psi and is a lot better, soaks up some of the bumps and has more grip. will see if they stay on the bead! Rear leafs were real close to sitting on the overloads. so soon as hit any small bump would get super hard. Talked to a dude i know who does leaf springs. he said "ah we just put them in the press to reset them" these are the overloads Threw away the short bottom one. Put the long one in the old boys china press, which was sweating out some oil! basically flattened them out, other than the little curve in the front, to attempt to stop spring wrap and tramp. probably wont do that but thought was there, end result: Flexes out bit better now, and has made the ride a bit better. likely remove another leaf if i ever get around to making a light weight tray Front still flexes better than rear Seems to work pretty good for near stock suspension. the front its stock springs with 50mm longer shocks. the made im mexico shocks in the rear seem to have plenty of travel, guessing they are stock length novelty of driving over shit hasn't worn off yet
Popular Post kpr
Took this dog out again for a decent test run. Went pretty well with no drama's. gearbox is getting pretty tired though. 1st gear has a sweet shudder. didnt really get a hard time in 1st, so guessing it was already on its way out. "Just hit it at speed" 2nd vid has a bit more rpm
kpr
pulled the deck off today. have 50mm of rake now measured from either ends of sills on cab. so shitloads over whole truck. i did some super dodgy measuring before i pulled apart. measured from under the diff with wheels on. rear was approx 600kg. should loose a big chunk of that by the time im finished. Have some parts on the way from usa but more on that later... Pile as of today, minus wood off deck: actually some of that will go back on. keeping the outer frame, so can continue confusing angry farmers Because boring update; Bonus Video. mostly same as ones above, but with some kp and bmw action

kpr
Used my cnc grinder to cut out some brackets These ones goes here. More, which seen some hole saw action They will tie into existing x member and new angle braces only 12 more to go...
Popular Post kpr
So its kind of obvious this is getting a 4 link. While I wasn't planing on a 4 link. One of the guys i go 3wding with, pointed out the diff was about too fly out of my truck. Then an even more scientific conclusion, while me and the bro were leaning on the back of the truck, parked up in the driveway. "hey that diff does move around a bit" when given a gentle nudge. The leaf spring mods above made it ride better, but springs were wrapping up like crazy. kinda expected it to do this but not quite so bad. Some guys add a link from top of diff back to the hanger bearing x-member to solve the problem. looked into it, but was more work than a simple link and more weight.. yeah nar 4 link time front bottom mounts tacked in place, hopefully can get it setup correct using the center or top hole. if so will chop the bottom one off as hangs down a bit All lining up pretty sweet so far. after tacking the mounts to chassis and diff. made up the bottom links, left link was only adjusted 1mm shorter than right, while still in the "jig" have sliced the jig off now. as diff needs to come up 140mm to ride height. so can work out the link angles properly. never thought i would build a triangulated setup, but is meant to be best compromise on 4wd stuff.
Popular Post kpr
Yes more brackets, this time with captive nuts. Front top link mount: Folded Tacked in place Diff end top link mount. Dat camber Got it to the point where i can cycle it thought is travel. Seems to be working good so far, other than that round x member is spoiling my fun, as top links eat it. so needs to go. Hanger x-member needs to be notched also.
Popular Post kpr
Ok so the chassis was getting in the way. Will go into why later. Solution also fixes the problem with tyres hitting the chassis, like its doing in one of pics above. Cut end off chassis and both x members are gone. then cut a V into rail and bent. After lining up and welding above. done same deal but back other way. What it used to look like. (already cut down 150mm)
Popular Post kpr
This will be max travel limited by my shock length. likely wont get quite this far with some springs in there though some double shear brackets to keep everyone happy probably should have ground that rust off..

Popular Post kpr
Some geezer on the internet said surf front brake would bolt on, they actually did. Same diameter but vented. got some of what looks to be china's finest, via aussie. not really helping with the weight situation, but they were cheap. now the old fronts on the ground can go on the back. Hows that so slammed
Popular Post kpr
Done a little bit more. Tube across diff is thin wall(light weight yo), is basically there to tie all the suspension mounting points together and add a bit of strength to the diff. Same deal tying the towers together. 500mm of spring so far, have some 125mm keepers on the way. so will be tipple rate with 625mm of spring all up. 225lb, 80lb and 20lb (keeper). When it gets close to full travel the soft 80lb spring will get locked out, leaving only the harder 225lb spring in action. keeper will be there so can run lowish ride height, with heaps of droop.
Popular Post kpr
Diff case almost done. just need to sort out a bump stop setup and make some caliper brackets. Then i cut a hole in it Welded up hole.. Have gained just over 20mm ground clearance. Doesn't sound alot. but its pretty much the same difference as going from 33" tyres to 35's. should have done the same to front when i had it apart.but didnt want to cut that sweet chrome. . Also, Someone in another thread awhile back, was saying how triangulated 4 links bind up with rose joints. Yeh nar nar nar.. only thing its binding up on is the ground.
