Multimeter tech

So, my fancy multimeter does dwell and rpm etc for 4,6,and 8 cylinders. Used it for years to tune the Triumph, but trying it on the Singer, the rpm is WAY off (and yes, I did remember to set it to 4 cyl) It seems to underread by a factor of at least 2.

Does this mean there is something wrong with the dizzy? Timing seems to wander until it hits about 2000rpm on the earometer.
