AALAWS
Little by Little.....the story of the noob car restorer. cut off half the un-needed mounts on the ae86 diff and left the pan hard mount for now. T3 does a te27 bar and mount kit that may work depending on exhaust etc. I cut into the tubing a little bit.....just wondered if I needed to fill/weld this up a bit for strength? Also sent the engine and a few bits (hubs, callipers) to get dipped and checked over. Nathan at Motor Preparations in Otorohanga is good to deal with. He's going to clean up the block and head, check the internals and let me knowwhat'll need replaced etc so that way I can budget for the rebuild - new cams, rwd water kit, cops.....port and polish.....whatever needs replacing. I'll paint it up, make it pretty, and stash it away for rebuild time when I'm ready to mock it up in the shell. ....and the shell and a bunch of other bits is on the way to get sandblasted and primed on wednesday!!! Stoked!!
Popular Post AALAWS
PROGRESS!!!!!!! Picked up the shell etc from getting blasted and primed. Waikato sandblasting did a good job of removing all the rust, paint etc from the underside and engine bay, and everywhere i couldn't........and with no panel warpage. No extra rust uncovered! just a few spots where it's true extent was revealed Also just a little bit of motivation (courtesy of some dude in the pillipines - SIC) ALSO: Engine is all good, just need 0.5 OS pistons and new rod bolts. Diff is all stripped and ready for leaf spring perches to be welded on. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49950-alasdairs-1974-ke25-corolla/page-2
AALAWS
My project fund is rather low at the moment, so to keep things ticking over it's onto a few smaller jobs......which always seem to cost a bit anyway hah! So glad for the overalls and facemask etc - wire stalks flying everywhere! I've wire wheeled all the callipers and hubs ready for paint and rebuild. small problem of brushing off this little grommet....and theres none in the rebuild kit. I'm asking though toyota at the mo....anyone have any ideas on where to get these? Also some rust around the edge of the piston cylinder. I talked to a brake guy and he says they blast these parts.... Are they stuffed or saveable? //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49950-alasdairs-1974-ke25-corolla/page-
Popular Post AALAWS
wow - October was my last post...... all my time has gone on my family and new business - and so has any money i've made from it too (who would have thought). I've painted up my front callipers and hubs and will put them back together soon - I've got to find things I can do with no spare $$ or major time. Bit of a plea for help here....... I'm in desperate need of an experienced friend!!!, a jack of all trades - a mentor to take me under his wing!! I look at my shell and all there is to do and maybe redo (and the fact I'm a total first timer and my experience is limited to, reading oldschool posts, internet research and yarns with people)....and I am feeling a bit overwhelmed, well a lot overwhelmed! I try to think I have a handle on the next step etc but man I could go on about all the questions and doubts I have about things..... My old man had a stroke a few years back and he's pretty closed off to getting involved because it makes him feel pretty shit that he can't do anything these days. Is there any folk out there in the Waikato that could lend a hand? even if it's a few yarns to help me get my head around it all and put a few doubts to ease?? I have beer in the fridge and an espresso machine.......whatever takes your fancy!!
AALAWS
so I Painted the callipers almost a week ago with dupli colour high heat colour, and clear, and they're still tacky. The clear can says to bake in an oven at 200deg, but I thought a few days in the sun atleast should be ok.....but it's still tacky.......any ideas? AALAWS
Thanks to the guys with the offers for help! I gave the calipers another clear coat and they are finally coming right - will give them a bake soon too. When I bought the Dupli Color paint, I didn't want silver, but a darker grey, so I got a high heat paint with the dark grey top, not caliper paint. But they still came out more silver like........went to get another can for the rears and discovered they have recently changed the colour of the lid to a light grey for the same paint because they knew it was a misrepresentation - thanks dicks! Anyway.....teaser pic of very cool things to come........Recaro seat custom skinned ala TE27

Popular Post AALAWS
Long time no post.......2 business's and 2 small kids and buying the house will do that to your time and $$..... I've spent a bit of time working on my other Toyota project....to fund my other Toyota project..... I am waiting for space to clear up at the Panel shop to get the body work underway. In the mean time I've managed to track down a few panel cuts and some NOS to boot! There's been a few false leads of random shells around from as far as Horopito to the Phillipines.......Horopito turned out to be a ke35 and the Phillipines never eventuated. I am still excitedly waiting to hear on another potential shell. I was picking up some camera's for a video job and the guy had a 1200 coupe in the garage......as I usually do now, I asked him if he had a spare ke25 shell and turns out he does.......it is yet to materialise but I will keep chasing this up! Just need a drivers side now! Also have a complete rear panel (Taillight surrounds/lower valance etc) currently in the next ML Racing container form Japan. NOS indicator lenses - Much shiny goodness! 15
AALAWS
last year an old barry drove his lawnmower into a power transformer and shorted out the street......right when I was doing a computer backup. I replaced my spa pool control board and the munted portable hard drive and wrote off the loss. A bit later I had to do a system restore from a backup to clean it up a bit (after watching a dodgy All Blacks live stream), but I had lost my recent ones with crashed hard drive so used an older one, thought nothing of it and moved on.........until I went to re-assemble my freshly blasted/painted/plated TE27 pedal box etc on the weekend. All my "dismantling" pics were lost in the process, my caliper ones were in there too......Bugger!! So I've put it all together the best I can remember. There may be a few washer or spacers out of order but meh we'll get there. I need to replace a couple of rubber stoppers/grommets that sit in the pedal and cushion them when inactive......all 4 of mine were worn and split, and I need the boot that sits over where the accelerator bracket meets the cable through the firewall.....anyone know where I can get something similar from? Yarns here:
AALAWS
So the wiper motor is all cleaned up and fitted to the te27 pedal box and I may have solved the grommet issue using some ae86 ones (if they arrive - that's another story) Got some wheels - 14x6 SSR Mesh. I need it on wheels for the panelbeater so these are good placeholders until they get a refurb or something else could pop up. The lips are a bit scuffed and one is a bit bent, but they'll be getting widened once the car is done if I use them. I'm going to hold off on the final decision about rack and pinion coversion until the very last minute. I need to get all the subframe and steering etc back together to get it rolling so can't be stuffed getting tied up in all that conversion and maths shit (blahblah time $$ and frustration). I've ordered a truck load of bits to get this ready (plus found some NOS outer tie rod ends and Pitman arm I had stashed away) SW20 rear struts for coilovers Idler arm, ball joints and outer tie rod ends T3 RCA's Cusco te27 Camberplates Full set new rubber bushings AE86 front & rear bearings and seals Diff gaskets Caliper rebuild kits AE86 Rotors Brake fitting kits and shims........theres more I've forgotten to list too....such a mission finding out all the parts you need and ordering them from all over! and some box section to make up a jig for transferring the leaf spring perches to the AE86 Diff housing - which is hopefully this weekends job.So theres a bit of welding, painting, crack testing and assembling and hopefully by the end of Feb she'll be other wheels again.
Popular Post AALAWS
Jig made! It's a bit rudimentary and the welds probably belong in design & disasters thread but the Leaf Spring perches in pretty much the exact right space - tape measure measurements agree with the chassis repair manual. Just need to make a little bracket to keep the face at exactly 90 degrees, but after that everything is you see is ready for some professional cutting and welding. Also had a big stash of bits arrive ready for all the reassembly. All genuine Toyota except for the eBay bushes....didnt really want to go down the nolathane/urethane etc path. Included with all the bearings and shims etc were 2 little ae86 pedal cushions.....I took a gamble to see if they would fit my te27 pedal box....ah yesssss. OCD satisfied. Before.... After.......perfik
AALAWS
Gave the leaf springs and brackets etc a wire wheel and a coat of rust converter What's the best top coat on all this stuff.....steering arms, strut bars, diff, blah blah...........powder coat or paint (special kind)?
AALAWS
aargh!! Looking at the old pics of this!! Better bloody get a hurry up on and get this finished!! Few more bits arrived to get it on it's wheels. Toyota diff gaskets and a few seals etc, cusco camber plates, front bushing kit ex eBay Thailand, AE86 discs and a replacement for a bent suspension arm (cheers Daz at Oldscool....eventually ha ha)....I'll get the bits off to the engineer on monday for a professional steel glue job.....then it's paint and assemble.
AALAWS
Ok so it's Wednesday tomorrow.....maybe I'll drop all those parts off in the morning My rear panel arrived via ML Racing! it looks like it's been a newish panel stitched on to a rustier car. It's been hacked off the back of the donor so thankfully all those rusty bits like the remainder of the boot floor etc can just be removed as I only need the actual face of the panel. It's got a bit of pitting along the bottom valance and a few small holes, but it's miles better than the bent swiss cheese on my car at the mo. Inner tie rod ends arrived too.......just waiting on one last delivery of gaskets and other small bits and we'll be in business.
AALAWS
Found a ke25 shell today.........salvaged the windscreens, a few plastic clips and the door chrome. Local engineer still hasn't sorted my diff and struts etc......and still a little boy waits...... Check out left to rot to see the two other wrecks hiding under the trees......
Popular Post AALAWS
So I finally got (most) of my bits back from the engineer! (Front struts/coil overs due early next week) Bearings removed from axles and minor repair to axle - wire wheeled up the hub faces and will need to replace a stud. Ball joints removed from LCA's, bolts swapped into straight (non bent) strut bar. Rusty section cut out of backing plate........which I then proceeded to put a hole in when cleaning up the welds ha ha will get it filled up easily enough. And the main event........leaf spring perches onto the AE86 diff housing And after a quick mock up and to check alignment......it is the goods! (will need to get bigger U-bolts for the larger diff housing) Now to get it crack tested and then all painted up and assembled to get the car on it's wheels for panelbeating!! Feels so good to finally be making some progress again. And in other good news, a local garage I've been doing some glass work for has a sandblast cabinet and is going to blast that shitty paint off my callipers for me so I can repaint them and assemble them with all my NOS parts goodness!
AALAWS
Finally!!! Off to drop these off to get crack tested tomorrow!! - along with the rear diff and the 4age mounts on a ke25 crossmember. MMMM......professional quality welding
AALAWS
Just like a state house........Crack testing passed! Gave a few bits a coat of primer the other day, then some top coats yesterday while the weather was......warmer atleast. It got pretty cold once I had finished, hopefully that doesn't effect the6-8 hour cure time?? Had them all hanging together with the fan heater going to warm up the area....complete with hi-tech corrugated cardboard insulation barriers! Powercleaned the diff housing, doused the inside with CRC and gave it a rub down with rust converter, and another coat on the leaf springs. Also had the shitty paint blasted off the callipers and got some crappy tyres fitted to the wheels to get it rolling atleast. Ordered some bigger U-bolts and the lowering blocks/brackets are being modified to fit them. Now I just need another good day to finish off the top coats and the fun part of assembling all of this to get it rolling begins!
AALAWS
Shiny Goodness. All painted and ready to assemble. Just not sure on the exact arrangement of my coil over kit........any advice? 1. There is two bits at the bottom for the spring to perch on. I assume having both of them threaded up tightly together is sufficient to hold the spring, but which way do they go? As in the picture? I've seen ones where the bigger one is flipped and at the bottom? and does one of the red plastic washers/spacers need to sit between the spring and the mount? 2. does the insert need a spacer between it and the outside of the strut tube or is having the threaded top enough? 3. Does the larger spring go first, or the smaller one (the retainer spring i believe?) ....again I have seen both ways. 4. The extra red plastic spacer is seen in the last photo....doe this sit between the threaded base/perch and the first spring? or the top of the top spring? (which is where it was in the kit but that black one is already there so that raised the question for me. I'm leaning towards the first option but just wanted to double check. Cheers folks......help a noob out!!
