Mitsubishi Starion foglight wiring

bonehead

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can help me.

I have a 1988 Starion widebody with the larger euro-spec fog lights in the bumper.

The foglight button on the instrument cluster isn't wired up, the foglights themselves only activate when the headlights are switched to high-beam, regardless of weather the foglight button is pressed or not.

What am I looking at in terms of difficulty for wiring up those fog-lights so that they activate solely when the foglight button is activated?

The park-lights (which are part of the same unit) light up when the park-light button is switched on - so hopefully the wiring is there and can easily be utilised.

Also, I am after amber lightbulbs for both the headlights and foglights too if anyone knows where to get those.

Thanks!

make sure you follow these rules of course

sounds like all you need to do is run a relay circuit to the lamps

The wiring may even be there already, but has been connected to the main beam for whatever reason

also i found this, the last guy has some info that may help.  Just run that wire to the switch if it exists

Isn't that fog light button for rear fog lights? Mine is anyway. I believe on some Jap spec cars it is used to operate front fog lights individually from main headlights but I have never seen it, on my other Jap import one it is blanked.

yeah if your widebody is Euro spec the fog light button would be activating the rear fog lamps rather than the fronts. On my VR-4 one pair of my fog lamps (it has two pairs) only come on with high beams and the other pair with the switch. I am unsure how JDM or US-spec does it considering they wouldn't have rear fog lamps which are a requirement in the EU.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info, mega helpful, I have wired the lamps up to the button now which activates both the front and rear fog lamps and makes the car very noticeable on the road with the main headlights down during the day.

Awesome stuff, greatly appreciated.

I would make the rear fog lamps switchable independent from the fronts. The rear fog lamps are very bright (brighter than the stop lamps) and are nothing but a nuisance in non-foggy conditions. There's nothing worse than following a Euro car owner who either doesn't realise the rear fogs are on, or have them switched on purposely. Just don't be one of those guys.

The fog light mod is a common mod, I did it on my 87 Starion. They won't come on without the driving lights, but don't require the headlights to be on anymore when the mod is done. This is basically a one-wire mod, you tap into one of the side marker 12V wires. Check out this post from starquestclub.com, your best Starion resource for this stuff...
