h4nd
Yeah, so the regular wasn't happening, but 3/4h tonight and that's the points changed, tested and advance set. The old ones were working, but shagged. You can rock the crank by hand, so that makes setting the (static) timing easy. Amusingly, when I took the dizzy out again to move everything around 1/8 turn so I could get the socket back off the retainer bolt (another interfering fastener) #1 and #2 lead positions swapped over. LoL.
h4nd
I got the cooling system together enough to take the Dai for a test drive. Oh dear. Leaks in the cooling system (annoying but simple), but the fault from the first engine has appeared in the bench (floor) tested engine... !!! I think I have realised a simple problem I've been overlooking all along. No, not that, another one. Pics soon.

h4nd
Have split that into assemblies, and had another go. Some observations: It works rather well (6" flames out the oil clagged expansion chamber just now). https://photos.app.goo.gl/t8qnrSrJkiMN4Fev8 The heat gun seems to work well for getting them started, but sometimes needs just a touch of butane into it to ignite the internals (WOOF!) say, about 1 second too much butane trashes the heaters on your heat gun in about 2 seconds (ask me how I know) That crap smells vile! Like creosote. The red band where I presume the internal carbon is burning creeps along the pipe at about 1 foot per 20 min.

h4nd
20 min to replace, err, install the thermostat: Which one of you fecking OS bogans was in here before me! Those bolts were all not quite tight, and the two RHS head bolts had oil on their lower threads. Possibly implying some degree of head leak. Once the thermostat was in, tightened and the motor actually properly warmed up, it's running with noticeably more zing. Not up to original Japanese engine spec, and there's more to be had, but much better for commuting around the city.
Popular Post h4nd
So, thanks to an @ajg193 referral, and @kyteler for posting the link over in the discussion thread, this happened: Then last friday, this also happened: That's new-ish to Chch, has an 850cc Dai il3 transplant, and the owner stopped to say hello.

h4nd
I've been chipping away at that corroded boat anchor motor. Bits of it were OK (starter fine, alt could be ok) but the carbs had inhaled water for years, so lots of the motor is junk. I was quite interested in getting the distributor assy off it (have disassembled most of it) but I think the cog / gear wheel at the bottom of the shaft may be corroded solid. I haven't been able to split the engine cases to see in there, even with all the bolts out. I may just give up on it soon. I had hoped to have a spare to match the spare engine I have.
h4nd
The lump above is still on the bench, other life things have needed doing. Then on Friday, during lots of urgent jobs, the throttle cable let go as I was leaving Jaycar. I scooted around a quick 180 on the remaining momentum, and a nice tradie, helped me push it into Appco, the trade autoparts place right there. They were great about it, let me fill one of their carparks for the rest of the day (they looked busy AF). The chick at the counter gave me a mobile mechanics number, and I sicced him on to it while I did urgent stuff. Vinny managed to cram the job in during a busy day for him; also noticed and replaced the clutch cable while he was at it, and did a bang on job of adjusting up the new cables. God jerb! Pretty good outcome really. This engine still feels like it's leaking in air at idle / over run, but I closed off the 2T oil by 1/2 turn (was too oil rich) and the idle air circuit 1/2t, and it's now acceptable enough until I get time to swap the crab. So, looking down the back of the motor (my tuning notes for later):
h4nd
I, ah, may have dropped muffins in to the crew at AppCo. You know, because muffins make cars go betterer.
h4nd
Yeah, so about a year back, I was a dummy in a carpark for long enough to do this. Oops. No one hurt, but
h4nd
Then of course CoVid cam, and we didn't need warrants. So I just kind of drive it for a year. Than we needed warrants again, and there was a little bottom cancer discovered. Found a guy, did the thing, got the warrant.
Popular Post h4nd
And then the bent radiator finally started doing wees on the floor. So on recommendation from local chaps, I went to A1 Radiator, who on request did a cheap and cheerful repair, which looks just fine. It's basic up front, so only 20 mins to get it drive-able / testable.

h4nd
So that was back in April? Anyways, I got to worrying about important things like changing the carpet. At the carpet place, the old girl stopped, and wouldn't kick over, even with jump starting. Then work started getting busy, so it got slow to look at it. May 7. Found this. That'll be it, fuel leaking round the booster plunger... Resulting in one fouled plug... Checked, cleaned pugs, carry on.
h4nd
May 10. Nah, actually that wasn't it. But I found this Which should look like this (missing arm on top to reach up to the incoming dizzy lead. Tried a Barrie repair, which had worked before: Cool. Fit up, carry on. 5
h4nd
Yeah, nah, not working, so withdrew a precious spare from my NOS stock and fitted it. Cool, onwards. Ah, no, not yet. Hmmmm. This white gunk in the diz cap is Alu oxide, which is a very high grade insulator. I'll have a quick clean up of that, too. Lead ends ain't that flash, either... All right, wander down to @Carsnz123 workplace and borrow a replacement for a bad lead. So actually, how was this running so well, just before it stopped, anyway?? h4nd
Ah, so that's not it either, fitted another precious spare (diz cap).
h4nd
May 22, Ok, probably not spark? Looks little lackadaisical, so nipped up the plug gaps for a longer lasting spark. Carb trouble? Hoick a spare in... Carb spring spare by BIQ and mis=-matched cable bracket mods... Ah, starts! on ether.. once ???
