Popular Post kicker
Stacks, heatshield and carb gaskets in, also repositioned the fuel unions as they would loosen slightly on long drives from harsh bumps. Big thanks to Manu for turning down two of my auxiliary venturis to allow the tubes to slide into the carb nicely. These turned up today A bit of oxidation but nothing too bad, in pretty damn good condition otherwise, I'm digging the gold so will leave it as is Currently elbow deep in dash wiring, hopefully I can get the new dash working soon, I have the loom for it as the pin-outs are different from my one but it also looks like the plugs are physically different, a pain in the bum but not the end of the world.
Popular Post kicker
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo some more rims turned up. I was looking for some 15x8 Streets to go with the 9's I already have but the only ones I had seen on Yahoo in the last 6 months were part of a set along with some 7's and were too pricey. Only option then was to go new. Moonlight Racing sussed it all out with Hayashi and after a couple weeks they were on their way. Yummy Other things that have happened; Gearbox is out so can be swapped with a better condition one. Exhaust is in pieces to tweak for clearance and add some flanges. Have also refitted my TS-X11's after painting them black (didn't like the silver and my black TS-X7's are too small), added a small amp and some 6" subwoofers under the parcel tray to add a bit of bass, seems to do the job without being silly.
kicker
Not much to report but any progress is good progress. Replacement gearbox is in, it probably would have taken longer but I had to move the car out of the shed I was renting cos the new owners wanted it empty. Once back in my own garage I had access to such luxuries as light and powerpoints and after much use of light and powerpoints I had my exhaust back together with extra clearance over the diff and a couple of flanges thrown in. I put some tyres on the rims and had a test fit, pretty good fit with the 8's, the 9's stick out an inch further due to offset so some work required. Incoming potato pics And because I can't stop fiddling with things I have plans to modify the cooling and charging areas. On the cooling side I am going to ditch the engine fan and fit a Volvo 2 speed unit. While at PaP I grabbed a dual thermo switch from a BMW which should have the temp settings I need to have it working properly with the thermostat. An inline housing for the switch is on its way, after a slight mod (tapping it to fit the BMW switch thread) it'll be usable. As far as the shroud, I'll probably fibreglass one up to suit. For charging I have an RB alternator to replace the stock externally regulated item. The wiring is pretty simple, may need a diode on the field circuit and the pulleys will need to be changed too. In less interesting news it also has a full complement of new balljoints in it, woooo
kicker
So shiny, tyres tomorrow Other minor things I forgot to mention New dash is in Replaced the C210 mirrors with chrome Cedric ones Swapped the analogue clock for a digital one but it's a dud :/
kicker
So instead of doing what I needed to do I started something else. Fan swap. After a quick measure I found that the Volvo fan shroud is a pretty good fit for the Cedric radiator, with a bit of trimming I ended up with this. The rad core is only marginally bigger, about 15mm left to right and 5mm top to bottom. It's tight but it fits. And the dual temp switch and housing
kicker
Electric fan is all done. After trimming down the Volvo shroud I just had to make a couple brackets then wire it up. Initial tests showed I wasn't going to be able to use the dual speed unit as I originally intended, the ranges of the switches I had didn't match the Cedric cooling system which was always likely. The first switch opened low and high at 80 and 88 respectively and the second switch opened at 91 and 99. The second switch wasn't usable, got too hot on the gauge for my liking, even on the low side. First switch was better but the low side triggered at 80 whereas the thermostat opens at 82 so the fan was constantly switching on and off. The high switch (88c) was spot on and would keep the gauge steady in the centre so I ended up wiring both through that and added a switch to select between the high speed and low speed fan, for summer and winter I guess haha. Testing the switches Switch is on the left on top of the control unit Pretty happy with it now. I still have 1 80-88 switch and 2 91-99 switches if anyone wants them, I also have a spare M14x1.5 tap for modding the switch housing. I have this to make up one evening now
kicker
My new internally regulated alternator is now in, ended up getting a re-co'd one which had been bumped up to 130 amps. It came off a TD27 or something, lucked out as it was a perfect fit including the pulley alignment. Wiring has also been beefed up to cope. Removing the external regulator just required a piece of wire and a diode. Next on the list is to replace the pulley bearing in the power steering pump.
Popular Post kicker
Took some pics today for my new insurance policy I changed the rad thermoswitch to one that opens at 91 and closes at 85 which seems to work well with the 82 degree thermostat. The old one switched sooner and was cooling it too far so was turning on and off without letting the radiator work by itself while moving. Booked in for a wheel alignment then all ready to go.
Popular Post kicker
Nats was good, arrival was delayed by a workshop giving me the car back with no brakes on Thursday evening, not sure what they did but I bled it up myself on Friday morning then set off. Scavenger hunt was fun On the subject of belts I think I can finally put that to bed. I now have no whine and they all fit nicely. Whine was caused by a too narrow belt, a 15A1055 fixed that, a new turnbuckle style tensioner and a 13A900 fixed the slippy alt and an AX25 gave the right length for the power steering (needed something between 13A675 and 13A710). The cooling system performed like a champ in a long hot traffic jam on the way back from Nats, the fan chooches the heat away nicely and the 91 on 85 off thermoswitch seems to be ideal. Next up is to sort the rear so I can lower it again and change the speedo drive in the gearbox so the speedo is a touch more accurate (reads 90 at 100kph).
Popular Post kicker
So after much spreadsheets full of ratio and wheel size calcs, I worked out I needed one of these. After all the changes, wheels, diff etc the speedo was reading 50kph when the actual speed was 55 and at 100 it was really 107. With the new 20 tooth gear, it now it shows 50 at 49 and 100 at 97, yay
kicker
A bit quiet here Scored some Nissan stainless monsoon shields off yahoo which I am stoked with. Had the diff out to narrow a wee bit to fit the 9's better, props to Halcrow engineering, excellent work and a 2 day turn around. Had 15mm cut off each axle, enough spline so no need for cutting and welding it. Also replaced the wheel bearings and all the leaf spring bushes while there. Popular Post kicker
So I have been looking at bigger brakes. Looking at S30 upgrade info, the first port of call are Toyota Hilux calipers, 4 piston and vented. Sounds good, will they fit? Don't know yet. I picked up a S12+8 caliper for a vented disc off a Landcruiser for a dollar to do some measurements. Stock caliper mount bolt centre to centre is 3.5", so is the Toyota caliper, yuss. Stock caliper mount boss is 19mm thick and the bottom mount slots in between the steering knuckle and the spindle, Toyota caliper is 19mm too so no problems there. Fitting the caliper looks sweet, now to find a disc that will work with minimal mucking around. After trawling through the DBA disc catalogue the vented 5 stud Z31 86-89 Turbo (DBA604) one looked promising. Stock Z31 Disc OD 271mm 274mm Disc ID 81mm 81mm Thickness 12.5mm 22mm Width 43.5mm 35.5mm Only thing I wasn't sure of was the bolt pcd as the 260C one is around 103mm, so I ordered some hoping that Nissan had kept it the same. Bolted up to the back of the holes sweet. An 8mm-ish spacer will get it sitting in the right spot. A couple things I'll need to check later is how the disc fits in the caliper, the disc is 22mm and the caliper slot is 23.3mm and also the disc is 3mm larger in diameter and the calipers both have the same distance from the mount holes to the bottom of the slot, should be a simple fix if needed.
Popular Post kicker
Just realised I've had this thing for 5 years now When I got it and now Not much else to add, just been tidying up the brake booster as it was a bit ugly. Here's an engine bay test video I did a while back (need to do another one somewhere I can run through the gears)
Popular Post kicker
Sitting a bit lower now, bled up the new brakes and went for a drive Just need to remake the rear of the exhaust, get some new shocks and fix a little bit of rubbing I'll get around to the paint at some point haha
Popular Post kicker
Oh yeah, forgot to mention how this went. I got a couple of 8mm spacers made up by @grunta of Grintec Industries Top service there. I bought some S12W Toyota calipers, all bolted up sweet, just had to widen the disc slot on the calipers from 23.3 to about 26mm and shave the ribs on the side of the caliper a little as they were just touching the rim. Also replaced the master to match the larger area of the S12W pistons, went with a 15/16 size one from a 280ZX and added a 10lb residual pressure valve to keep the rear drums working. Brakes feel good so far but vented with 4 pots would feel better than solid with 2 pots
