Cortina Engine block ID

Something makes me recall thats a Lotus block..

A quick search finds

701M 6015

Something rather special, reputedly of Ford Germany origin probably for the Escort T/C. Only made as an ‘L’ block, a meatier casting altogether, with big square main caps, the best basis for a competition engine, and much sought after. Many were used with 81mm bores towards the end of Ford’s engine exchange scheme for the 1500cc Cortina, so you know where to look!

What its worth depends on what else it comes with and what is fucked on it. I would say if it can take a slight rebore, has good threads and comes with the main caps then it would be worth a few bucks.

I would pay maybe $500 - $1000 if I wanted one, note I'm not an Escort expert by any stretch of the imagination but just chucking up a guess.

If it came with an original crank and some of the bolt on stuff it could possibly be worth double that.

Thanks for the info guys,

its complete minus sump, head and timing chain cover, all looks to be good condition, though have not removed bearing caps etc.

Old man has no use for it, got it for nothing, so is going sell it on, would be it worth getting it cleaned up and properly inspected/, or just sell it as is, where would be the best place to advertise it

Thanks

I doubt if you'll get any more money for it although you'll most probably sell it quicker if you had a clean up and report from an engine reconditioner.

Wouldn't cost that much to have a report done though either. Also would be piece of mind for any purchaser that you are reputable.

My best bet would be to sell it in Classic Car magazine..

I sold a bare L block on Trademe a few years ago with a collapsed liner and got $120 for it.

The L blocks found their way into lots of standard Cortinas and Escorts so they were not always under Lotus heads. having said that, they are not common either.

A 701M is not a 1500cc Cortina block though, so don't advertise it as such.

How many flywheel bolt holes are in the crankshaft? 4 or 6?
