DJZ
Any engine reconditioning workshop? I use MPL Automotive on Wairakei Road or Mace Engine Reconditioners on Wilmer Street. Car-aid are also good from what I hear.

bubblegoose
depends what your doing? service skim is just taking the top of to prep for new gasket to bump the compression up is all up to you, the more you shave the more strain on the engine, the weaker the head gets and more chance you might have to machine the pistons i know datsun a-series are more than happy to loose 5mm
troyzakp60
i just want a bit more higher compression, but dnt wana fuck anything.just going to port it cam carb ect nothing realy anyhting on the block
anglia4
Make sure you check your piston to valve clearances after you have had it skimmed if you are taking a bit of meat off
troyzakp60
so whats enough to get to get high compression but not screw it all up
bubblegoose
you wont get 'high compression' but toyota gurus correct me if im wrong i think you could take 1mm off and be safe, your bearings might not like you/so ive heard

1337cookie
In many older engines if you do a head skim you want to get shims for your cam towers the same height as the skim you did. This will keep the cam lobes touching the same area on valve lash to avoid wear and the timing chain/timing belt the same distance from the crank. eg. 1mm skim you want to put 1mm shims under your cam towers. If you want an easy Compression ratio increase use a thinner head gasket. I have heard there is a guy in chch that will do a metal head gasket to your specs for about $80. Also you may not need shims depending on if you have an adjustable timing chain and the skim is within the tolerances of the valve lash wipe area. Someone else who is more experienced with it can probably explain this better.
