Cortina mk4-5 diffs, info needed

I have read

"TF diff ratios on the sixes may be the same, but it's not the same diff. Ford down graded to the same diff as the Corona, Sigma unit. The fours ran 3.42:1 ratios. Pre TF's back to post October 1972 ran the lovely 25 spline BW 7 7/8 th diff, but often the crown wheel was 7 5/8ths. It was only some ratios which were the full 7 7/8 ths (200 mm)"

And I have also read

"Watch out also because some earlier Cortinas came fitted with a back hat diff too but it was much smaller/weaker."

I read this and am wanting to know how you can tell the crappy weak diff from the strong one?

Also don't bother comparing Aussie Cortina diffs to UK/NZ ones.

As you have read the Aussie ones run a B/W diff the same as Falcons/Valiants/some holdens etc (for some reason I thought only the 6cyl cars had the big diff), the smaller diff they are talking about that's the same as in Coronas and Sigmas is not what comes in the UK Fords OR the Japanese Coronas or Sigmas its just a smaller B/W diff that a few of the Aussie car co's all used (same as VL Commodore and Nissan Pintara too from memory??)

And if you had bothered to do a search of the forums you would have seen that I posted some info on Cortina diff ratios 2 weeks ago

Ok, yeah, I have read that thread and decided to get a Cortina diff shortened as it is stronger than an escort diff and is still 4x108...and was stoked to see they come out with 3.4:1. I can get diff shortened properly for $400 in Hamilton. Ends up cheaper than buying a baby atlas or similar to fit and escort.
