WHERE THE HELL TO GET A MK1 CORTINA CLUTCH

can someone please tell me where the F**K i can get a new clutch kit for my g/f's cortina need pressure plate and all it been a mission trying to sorse anything

please help just after standard stuff found a place in aussie but dont want to spend as much as they want

BNT doesnt stock them as for being down south im not im up north

id be keen to get this goose13 dudes number and see what he has

and does anyone know who would sell a spigot bearing?

going to use a mk3 gearbox (an old guy said it was) and just bolt on the coritna bellhousing everything things the same length wise size but the input shaft is slighty smaller in diameter could just get a copper one made up i guess?

The single rail gearbox will not fit without trans tunnel mods. They are too tall in the rear and the gear lever comes out in a different place that will foul your handbrake (if you have a floor handbrake that is) or bench seat.

Gearbox mounts are impossible to find as pommy boxes leak oil that eats rubber. There are options though - the best is to have a new one cast out of nolathane

"Up North" isn't verydescriptive for folks that are trying to help you. Where are you?

haha sorry about that im in Whangarei but come down to auckland evey weekend

the old gearbox is exactly the same in every dimension ive measured it alot and from alot of diff angles...maybe the old guy was wrong it does have a GTE tag on it but anyone can put that on..maybe a mk2 gearbox?

i know the gear stick comes out in a different place thats what a angle grinder and welder is for to make a new and cover old one

just for reference the old gearbox was the type with the massive gear stick as for the handbrake and bench seat the car has racepros and has a "UTE" style handbrake so theres no problem there

i was definitly thinking that i should just get a nolathane one made up who would do casting in auckland?

would the old spigot bearing be "o.k" or would i need to get some kind of custom joby made up (have access to lathes) just wondering if i could get something off the shelf

You could go see BJ (Brendon) Mackie at BNT Whangarei (if he is still there) and talk through clutch prices. A 1600cc Escort one will bolt to the flywheel and accept the gearbox but the release bearing MIGHT need attention.

You may have stumbled onto a Mk2 GT Cortina gearbox. Is the housing around the tailshaft alloy or cast steel? A photo will confirm it if you can get one. It you have got a Mk2 GT box for less than $600 you should be very pleased with yourself.

The diameter AND length of the input shaft nose are different on some of those boxes - as is the diameter of the input shaft shroud (that the release bearing slides on). Often the input shaft will need to be shortened to go into the 120E cranks but that can be done with an anglegrinder.

It is important to dummy assemble the gearbox to the motor out of the car iff possible and check clearances and crank loadings. There is more that one depth of bellhousing.

A new pilot bearing to fit can be bought off the shelf for less than $20 with the dimensions you can take from the input shaft and crank.

Your best bet for the gearbox mount it to have Autolign in New market, Auckland cast a new nolathane one. You will need to provide your old mount and about $120 from memory. Do check with SAS and Enford in Christchurch for a rubber one first. Escort ones do not fit.

hmmmmmmm youve giving me lots to think about o wise one.

the gearbox came with the car to so it cost me nothing :D umm ill try get a pick up tomorow of it or atleast the numbers on the side. is the GT cast steel or alloy? if it means anything it a pretty f'n light gearbox.

crap $120 for a casting thats not what i wanted to here. I have a mate that works at BNT Ryan (my flat mate) and hes stumped as in what i should do... do you have any idea whats needs doing to the release bearing ie. how its got about a mllion surclips holding it in and how it could change to a newer one? if i was going to use the escort clutch setup? with that setup my only worry is how frigin wierd the standard mk1 pressure plate looks and it's height

I know the input shaft shroud has the same diameter as the cortina one (ive measured it up)

and this might sound like a dum as f**k question but expain chekcing crank loadings :oops:

can get pics of all my problems and woos one the weekend as the cars in aux.

and yes my spelling and english sux its been a looooong day designing crap

Crank loading will only be an issue if the input shaft is too long and it loads the crankshaft onto the thrust washers. It has caught many an unsuspecting chap out with that kind of gearbox swap.

The single rail Mk3 Cortina 1600cc gearbox has an alloy tailshaft housing and is a bit of a problem to fit into the Mk1 Cortina trans tunnel as the actual single rail housing (cast as part of the tailshaft housing) is taller that the original three rail gearbox. Having said that - it can be done by spacing down the gearbox crossmember and using longer bolts.

Escort release bearing arrangements are cable operated and you don't want to go there.

The only thing you MIGHT need to change using an Escort clutch pressure and driven plate is the release bearing fork and bearing. Often you can get away with it by changing the length of the adjustable rod that comes out of the slave cylinder - it is so much easier if you have the motor and box together on the bench

I think that if you have not got a problem with the existing three rail gearbox you should think about keeping it - even with the majic wand gearlever they shift OK - but that big gap in ratios between second and third is horrible.

Check Enford for a gearbox mount. They have a website.

I am throwing out mega MK1 Cortina gearbox stuff ATM as I have to move out of my workshop but I don't have time to pack and send anything bigger than a shoe and I can't store the gearbox parts for more than three more days. If there is anything small that you need I might be able to help - but as above time is of the essence.

EDIT: If you think your existing pressure plate looks wierd then it is probably an original three finger pressure plate ..... and they are CRAP. They are also quite tall so get Ryan to bring home an Escort one, bolt it up to the flywheel and measure the height for the release bearing.... you could be pleasantly surprised.

If you need a better, stronger clutch don't forget to go for the Hillman Hunter pressure plate. They handle 150hp all day long (trust me on that :twisted: )

i would keep the gearbox (i should say it now its my g,f's car) but it's absolutely poked the syncros are fully f'd and when i took out the gear lever there were bits of bearing everywhere even inside the bellhousing there was metal peices :lol: it sounded like a transformer when changing gear!

from what i saw the tailshaft of the gearbox is the same hieght and length as the old mk1 one.

what Mk1 gearbox stuff do you have? really want to stick the other gearbox in as it will be stronger and soooo much better to drive!

im so confused! dam work

its an old pick its lower now and has been tiytied up alot we got it standard of an ol guy out west..got heapsa motor goodies for it :o

I have heaps of everything in those gearboxes.

There is at least one complete three rail floor change box - but you would need to arrange someone to collect it asap and I don't know how good it is.

I run a Mk2 GT Cortina style three rail with a Quaife straight cut close ratio gearset - and you can't have that :lol:

oh well, i dont know anyone in wellington that could pick up any parts so i guess im shit outa luck.. really want this other gearbox in though just need more knowledge!! i also know this other gearbox has been rebuilt so it will be mint once it finds it's way in do you have a pick of a mk2 GTE box? then i could tell you if it's that

Just red your edit.. it is one of those alien three finger pressure plates and yes it is crap!! changing gear is a pretty decent work out.. so Hillman Hunter pressure plate then and a escort clutch plate is that what your saying the go is? with the extra hieght of the standard pressure plate how would it help a new one bolt up nice?
