dont the deisels have it off the gbox or something like that....measures the actual turn of the engine rather than the spark. Shutup it could work

edit: or maybe u could run it off the altenator somehow. Im no electrician but u never know. Must be some info on google

im not actually sure aye, ive never actually got under and have a look, i know nuttin about diesel. only experience ive had with it is watching ppl doing skids on it,

oh shit duno why i thort it was diesel then

and nearly all diesel engines, which have no ignition system) engine speed is determined by the frequency from the alternator tachometer output (a special circuit inside the alternator to convert from rectified sine wave to square wave)which is directly proportional to engine speed. Tachometers driven by a rotating cable from a drive unit fitted to the engine (usually on the camshaft) also exist- usually on simple diesel-engined machinery with basic or no electrical systems. With modern engine management systems found in present day vehicles, the tachometer is driven directly from the engine management ECU.

never know my rolla had all the wiring right up to the dash for a tach but never had one, being that it is petrol and wiring is all thats needed its a bit different but u still never know, toyota is good at having everything there but the bit you look at.
