davidian
ok since ive got my engine back its got this funny engine rattle when i put my foot down, so its not there when just cruising... sounds like theres a fuckin ball bearing bouncing around the inside... i thought it was pinging from shit gas so i filled up the tank and used +10 unit octane boost as well as lead substitute but still no luck. the guy that rebuild it set the timing to std. escort 1600 and told me to call the guy who initially built the engine and ask him what exactly the timing should be. i havent been able to get a hold of the guy. anyways im wondering if this is a timing issue or wtf?? any ideas? thanks
CaMpylobacter
sounds like detonation hard. but you'd think running better fuel would sort it out? hasn't got a poorly sealing exh manifold gasket per chance? retard the timing a little and try that? not running lean? davidian
good call cuz, ill check the exhaust as it does sound noisier these days... just like back in the days of loose extractors i dont think its running lean as it usually reaks of gas... ill try retarding the timing as soon as this fucking rain eases up

Chrome_GT
Any chance the metal ring in the exhaust flange has cracked in half and fallen down the exhaust downpipe? Weird suggestion but possible. Myne had that problem and it the broken off part rattled around for a while.
davidian
when you boot it it kinda sounds like its in too high a gear if you know what i mean anywhoo, booked in for a dyno tune next wednesday.. $130 a hour. ouch
Chrome_GT
Weird. Yeah it really sounds like detonation. Have you tried just turning the dizzy to change the timing. Make a mark with a nail or something so you can turn it back to where it was if there is no improvement. What mods were done to the engine? Hemi
thats got me confused , id say detonation like everyone else but yes dont seem to be that :S, could be something in the exhaust i had a ratlle on acceration once and a week later my exhaust fell in half ...just a suggestion
fuel
That does sound like detonation. Has your distributor got vacuum advance? Make sure the advancing mechanism isn't stuck or fouled. Retard the timing, and see if it does it again. BTW, when octane boosters say up to 10 points, 1 point equals 0.1 RON. If you put 95 in it, it would most likely have upped it to 96. Hemi
yea well i dont get that cos i run my 1600 on 96 with plugs that were 2 points too hot (rebuilt motor) witha total of something like 45 degrees advance and it was only ment to be 35 at most or sumthing and my car ddnt detonate .... What mods were done to the engine? in brief... 60 thou oversize pistons pocketed, 2L valves, formula ford double valve springs, cam grind, 32/36 etc
