sorry if been asked did search

me escort got a leak in firewall, i know ill fail warrent next time,

it right under the bubble thingy, theres a bit of surface rust, and also inside the bubble, how does one fix that, do i have cut open the bubble to fix it inside it. if anyones done this, did you have to remove your dash, was it hard removing the dash.

secondly i got standard 1980 1300 auto, daily runner, can i use 91 petrol, is it bad for the engine, its just about to tick to 100,000 Km,

thanks.

Dont know about the first question, but ill take a stab at the second as say, yes- it will run, but will prob run like crap, ie back fire detonate ect, ive put 91 in my old rwd 323 before and it would pre-detonate all the time, in fact, you could turn the engine of and it would continue running for about a minute(mechanicle fuel pump).

Most likely it will just drive like a pig and use more fuel on 91' so defeats the purpose of stingeing out on 98.

91 is crap in the escort. As Def' said, runs on for ages. No pinking tho, but the fuel doesn't take you the same mileage, so I used to find the cost worked out about the same, but the car was less fun to drive and embarrasing in the parking lot. It's no good for the transmission having to stall it all the time to stop it running and running.

As for the bubble, it's a bastard. I fixed mine from underneath, that required removal of the whole dash, glovebox, console, heater, wipers everything - and I was lucky that the rust wasn't too much inside. The problem is, doing by cutting the bubble out, fixing and rewelding it in is going to look sh*t unless you are a brilliant welder - in which case you wouldn't be asking. Also, if you are cutting with a grinder, take the windscreen out or mask it really well - otherwise it will get pock marked and will look awful once the embedded steel starts to rust.

With the rust, you should be able to get to it without cutting the bubble up. You'll need to take out the centre console, carpet, heater unit, glovebox etc to get to it tho... Would probably make access abit easier by taking out the dash, but its not really necessary.

When you get to the rust, youll probably find more running along that seam where the top of the firewall meets the dash area sorta thing. Hard to explain, but youll know when you get to it :P Youll probably find surface rust all over the firewall (I did) so just wire brush it all of and spray a good coat of that sound deadener/sealer shit over it...

If theres not a whole lot of rust there, you can just get away with bogging any smallish holes try and do a real good job and it shouldnt get picked up.. but it isstructural so anything excessive should definitely be welded.

Umm for the rust in the bubble will probably need to cut it tho, depends on how bad it is.. if it hasn't gone through, then just spray fisholene (or similar) all over it. If it has, then yea itll need to be cut up or sumthing..

With the 91 petrol, it will run, but just not well. I tried mine on it once when I was super poor and I wouldn't recommend it...

Run it on 96 or 98 for sure. As for the rust under the heater bubble its best to cut and plate it. I did my sport took all the dash out ect and the rust had crept along the seem. My mate cut the bubble out completly and used a sierra fan or sumfin was a while ago that spot under the bubble is real common for rust.
