Dutch
I want to get rid of some surface rust around the edges of my doors, rims and boot corners, etc... how do I go about this? I'm guessing something along the lines of using a wire brush to scrape off the flaking paint and stubborn rust, then sand back the rest and paint over. Is there paint I can use that will stop the rust from coming back? (it doesnt have to look great at the mo, just do the job)
WildPlumDx
well me personally i would invest in a wire brush that bolts on an angle grinder those are legend 1000X faster and way easy to handle wire brush takes out to much you can be more accurate with the grinder brush you can get em at any hardware store just make sure you get the one for your grinders thread spline pattern they have stacks of diff ones, you can pick grinders up for 20 bucks at the least and the brushes are usually 30 odd anyways if you cant get one of those i would use a wire brush and low grit sand paper maybe 80 and finish with 180 if its only temp and to prime etch primer 1st then standy primer with atleast some paint over that so the primer dont suck up the water oh and treat the rust with rust kill make sure you get all of it out every tiny piece rust will only come back sooner if you dont! anyways thats my two cents! Guest Eddie W
What they call a wire disk(not the cup type) are pretty demon on a grinder but what I've found even better are those paint removing disks you see advertised on tv. They look a bit like your mums pot scrubber and can be bought to fit either a grinder or a drill. I know for a fact that on a small grinder they are lethal on rust. esky boi
Yea bo, wire brush on a drill, then spray some of that rustkill shit on, then a couple of good thick coats of etch primer, sand it smooth, then put on some normal primer, sand smooth, then paint.. sorted
Ned
why rust kill? metal will not rust without water so as long as it all coverd in paint you'll be fine... that is if the rust is fully dried of course. also, wouldnt it be easier to just use a wee bit of bog to fill up the bits that he wire brushed out? then sand, primer and paint
DavidTheCreator
my escort had so much bog in it i had to use a grinder to get it out, then i just cleaned it up with a wire brush thingy for a drill, i was gonna bog it up but never had the time so i just sprayed it with some primer (which was supposed to be grey and turned out to be a peachy colour) to stop surface rust. Guest Eddie W
When using etch primer the first coat should be quite thin(or light) otherwise it doesn't etch properly. Eddie
