  1. Right. After exams I have two weeks before work, and many plans for the MG as it is going on a road trip come new years. -Stereo -Fix leaky diff -Put heater back in -Fix seat diaphragm -New dizzy -tune carbys -Convert back seat into something useful? Thinking either storage bins where the old 6v batteries were or turning it into one big side-facing seat. -Headlight relays -Change the glove-box lock (currently it uses the ignition key, and can only be open/closed with the key. Annoying for obvious reasons). After I get back Ima try take the gearbox out, the synchro on second is defiantly screwed. Will try provide pics when I find a camera
  2. Just replace the throttle cable on my HS4s, have a few questions: 1) Is regular grease ok to lube the cable with? 2) On attached pic, the red circle indicates where the cable assembly moves the throttle. However the cable end is too small to fit evenly into the circled notch. It is meant to be like that? It means I get a bit of travel in the pedal without it actually doing anything, which is rather annoying (I didn't notice before as I only had 1 of 3 throttle springs, and most of the time had to pull the pedal back with my foot.
  3. I get spam, but most of that thread seems to be short but legit discussions. Or maybe it's just one big troll, who knows.
  4. ^Sounds like the most likely cause. Otherwise see what else is connected to your ignition circuit that could be delivering power.
  5. I have to say, as the first time meeting people though the internet, I found it extremely weird to have everyone introduce themselves by usernames... P.S. Whoevers stag that was I'm going to steal your towbar
  6. FUCK!~ Someone stole the chrome strip from the side of my door And tried to get into the sunroof, so I don't know if that'll ever work right again. Screw taking friends in it too, they slam the doors, touch everything they can, and break your seats. /rage.
  7. Apologies for not posting a whole lot, I was overseas. I took the heater radiator in to get tested, someone had drilled a hole in it and puttied it up similar to the dizzy, so I had to get that fixed. Also new is a working oil/temp gauge, which is nice to know my car isn't overheating. Pic's coming soon.
  8. Will be there. It should have stopped snowing in the Waitaks by then.

    Twin-carbs?

Yeah, BP 98 is the best, your lucky to have it close. Points is fine but you have to go back and check them every couple of months and make sure the plate hasn't shifted etc etc which is just something most people would rather not do if they could

    Twin-carbs?

SUs are elegant devices, built pretty well. The only problem I have had so far is running high ethanol content fuel causes separation in the floats and probably ain't that good if you're still rocking old school rubber lines. In saying that, non-ethanol fuel is easy enough to find (just avoid gull and certain 91 mixes)
  11. Overseas, spose I'll have to wait another month
  12. Someone's stolen my camera, but today I removed the entire heating unit (that was a real bitch to get out), and took the radiator in to get looked at (the unit had been plugged off by some previous owner). The shell is pretty rusted, but I'll sand it and respray, and then atleast if I fuck it up it doesn't matter too much Changed the rear diff and gearbox oil too. Whoever designed these cars obviously hated mechanics. The drain and filler plugs for the diff have different sizes, the gearbox and overdrive drain plugs have different sizes, and the filler/dipstick for the gearbox is under the center console...
  13. If the points are fucked you'd get misfiring and all sorts, but the timing of the sparks that do fire would be in the same time, if I understand right
  14. According to Paul the aussie manufactured cars used up whatever was left over from old kits in newer cars, which also explains why I have the mechanical temperature gauge (which got phased out ~1969). Cheap bastards. Will any old auto-electrician be able to sell me replacement wires? As you can see from the photos my overdrive circut is a little dodge, and I'd like to keep the wiring the right colours for my (and the next owners) sanity.
  15. Been doing all the usual maintenance on this thing since the previous owners didn't do any. Went to go looking for the grease nipples and found this The nipples were there, just buried under an inch of old grease mixed with soot and grit, and took a bit of digging to get exposed. I also found a few nuts and bolts buried in the gunk. Next problem is my intermittent overdrive. I'm praying it's not the solenoid, and think I have the suspect narrowed down to this However I heard it could be bad oil pressure too, and since my dipstick/filler plug is currently frozen in the hole that could be a problem trying to fill it up... Left some CRC on it last night, hopefully it comes out tonight sometime
  16. Yeah, it's great being able to get new parts, and I stop by at pauls for odds and ends regularly. Dizzy I'm getting from america as I got a sweet deal with the exchange rate at the moment, and I don't mind waiting for a bit. I suppose I really should swap out for a 5 speed if I'm getting a new engine too, although I do love driving with the dash-mounted overdrive switch.
  17. Well, being my first car I kinda wished I knew what I was looking at when I checked over the engine I probably would have noticed this Looks like the (neglectful) PO broke the mounting when trying set the timing. Until my replacement arrives from america, this will have to do
  18. My first priority is to get the drive gear in working order. Notably the dizzy needs replacing, might need a new syncro ring for the gearbox, and the carbs need a good cleanup. Second is to get the dash sorted out, as pretty much nothing aside from the headlights work, and there's wires and weird shit from all over the place (I think possibly someone attempted a electric window conversion?) Then, the plan is to convert to a V6 or V8 of some description. The buick aluminum V8 is pretty popular from what I've heard, but I have seen one example that took a M series from a supra, and that looks way more fun P.S. are the pics on the project too big?
  19. Discussion for this http://www.oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=28070 Will be updating the project thread more over the coming days.
  20. After being offered the family's new-school nanna-spec toyota I told them to stuff it and bought this instead. It was in pretty good nick, sitting around in the previous owners garage for more than a few years. No rust on the body or engine bay, with a little surface rust on the firewall and boot pan. Only done 70000 miles when I bought it, engine seems to be in good condition also. Not shown there is the oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator. Lots more to come as I get around to uploading the photos. I kinda wanted to start with a triumph GT6, but parts aren't half available, and just a shell would put be back twice what I paid for this car. If I was really rolling in dosh, I'd buy a volvo P1800 or Jag XKE
  21. acetylene or hydrogen? it wouldn't be "engine knock" anymore it would be "engine explode"
  22. Interesting read. However they really need a better name for their product. "Water wetter"? bahahah
  23. ^legend. Whatever you do, I'd make sure you flush the system out with normal water before you put the coolant mix back. It might sound picky, but you use demineralized water to top up your radiator because the extra crap in tap water can scale and build up (like the inside of old kettles). I wouldn't want the soda and and stuff sitting around inside of the pipes until your next coolant change. It's no harm done, and will slow the build up of crap in the long run
