  1. So update time. Gave it a wash the other day, which I think is the second wash I have ever given it. I should relly wash it more often. Have decided that I am not the best panelbeater in the world (duh) and also don't have access to a lot of necessary tools, so am going to save up some money and send it somewhere to get the rust cut out and sorted. There isn't a huge amount and no structural stuff so all good. Also found the lower sills have been dented somehow, so need to get them pulled out and fixed. Rust to be fixed is: -Bottom of RH front guard. -Spot on RHS of tray. -A strip about10-15cm long on LHS of tray. -Top of L+R A pillars. (Will be getting the windscreen taken out so this can be done properly) -And the worst, tailgate, the whole thing is riddled with rust, would replace it (especially if I could find one that said 'DATSUN' instead of Nissan) but not sure whjere to source that sort of thing from. Also: -Jack out lower sills L+R, not hugely munted or anything, just awkward. -And minor dents here, there and everywhere. Got some pics of the rust but not of the dents, hard to ge tpics of them. The rust in the tray: The tail gate. See all along the bottom it has rusted out: RH Guard: And the rust in the 'A' Pillars. Well, less rust, more dodgey patches that need to be fixed up: Anyone know of a panelbeater in Whangarei that does home jobs or cashies after hours that they can recommend, and has the tools? Not looking urgently as need to save some cash first. Have someone to do spraying so only need it taken to primer. On a positive note, did the rear brakes yesterday. New shoes and cylinders in there. Just need to get some driving done to get them to bed in properly, the old man and I bled up the brakes too. Due for an oil change this weekend as well so need to buy a new filter. New (to me, so second hand) tyres on their way too, $100 for 4 off a friend of Dads, good tread. Any feedback, chuck it here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=30255 Chur.
  2. That seems to answer my question. My roll cage would consist of a main hoop and two bars that go down towards the rear of the car, and diagonal braces between these and also in the main hoop. The main hoop should sit well behind the front seats position so it should be all good. From the sounds of it I will just need to plug the rear seatbelt anchorage points and bolt holes for the rear seat. Should be the goods. Cheers everyone.
  3. the main reason for the homologation question. personally wouldn't waste my time with a non-homologated cage, unless i knew the fabricator. too many pitfalls, and i used to be MSNZ Scrutineer. I was aware of the main hoop min. diameter change and in the Trademe auction when I bought it, it did mention it being up to spec with the new laws. I can't measure it right now as it is at my parents place. However from the gist of things I will probably be better off going half cage. smokin' joe, seeing as you used to be a MSNZ scrutineer, do you know the legalities in terms of half cages in motorsport/on road use?
  4. No, which is the other thing that worries me. I don't know who welded it up so I can't say if they are a certified welder or not, if that's important (which I would think it probably is). I know the tube used to build it is up to scratch, just not sure on the construction. The guy that had it before me had a 400+hp evo engine it and got scared of it so pulled it off the road to put a cage in it and never finished the job.
  5. Hi guys, When I bought my latest KE70 (2 door wagon), it had a full roll cage started in it, with basically the side intrusion bars left out, as well as the bars from the dash bar to the front turrets, and it has not yet been gusseted. I have just been thinking about what I really want to use this car for, and am thinking that a full cage may not be necessary, and a half cage might be more suitable. What are the legalities surrounding certification of a full/half cage? Do I need to do the two track days a year (or something like this I hear) with a half cage to keep it legal as with a full cage? Basically the end use of the car will be a cool street car, which can also be used for track days and the like. I don't honestly see myself being the next D1 champ and if I am looking to go that way I would probably build a dedicated car. Let me know your knowledge on this subject. Chur, Hayden.
  6. Hay man, good looking 720. As far as I know the 720 Kingcab only ever came with the bucket seats in the front, not a bench seat, so they could be easily reclined to let people in the back (not that you would ever get people in the back of one of these).
  7. I don't think it will. I don't mind cutting out the floor though. It won't exactly have a rear seat because roll cage/race car. However will let you know (via my project thread) what happens.
  8. Have had slant front in the past, twin headlight looks better to me. Either that or sunken in front. Yeah 2 door wagons are pretty sweet.
  9. Discuss: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=33784 So after I sold this Corolla, And scrapped this one, I obtained another one. I bought of TM from the North Shore, so I put a trailer on my ute like so, and proceeded to make a very sloooow trip to the North Shore to pick it up. I took a couple of pics of it with my phone on the way back when we stopped for a break. I bought a few other bits for it as well... BUT then I lost my job at the end of Jan and haven't been able to get full time employment since. So things have slowed to say the least. However, details at the moment are: -2 door wagon. -Reg on hold. -Acid dipped, primed, most of a roll cage welded in (side intrusion bars and bars through to front turrets still to be added), and seam welded throughout. -Have an S13 rear subframe that I am looking at mounting. Future plans (always subject to change): -Either 1UZ or 1JZ, with f/wall work. -W5* box. -Shortened S13 rear subrame for IRS and easy access to cheap adjustable suspension parts. -Install front adjusties with adjustable lower arms (already have these). -ROTA Shakotan wheels in either 15x8(F) and 15x9® or 15x9 all round. -Slam. -Drop tank. -Bla bla all the rest of that race car stuff. Will be certed, WOFed and registered at the end so all needs to be legit. If I don't get a job by July I will be taking a welding and Fab course through NorthTec so that will hopefully speed things up. Let me know your thoughts/tell me I'm over ambitious/I am but I don't care. Chur.
  10. Update time! Some pics: Removed the canopy, joy of joys, found a lot of rust along the top of the tray where the canopy had been sitting! You can sort of see it in those pics if you look hard. So I ground it out, then sprayed it with primer, didn't have time today to pretty it up. Have done some other rust too, as shown by the primer patches. Also, bad news. Last time it rained hard, I found a nice puddle in my passenger footwell. The ute has previously rusted out at the top of the A pillars and been repaired by the previous owner, but the repairs are shoddy at best and are leaking. SO I will have to wait until I have another vehicle to use (hopefully soon) so I can take the windscreen out and repair it properly. Good news is though, that as you can see in the photos, I now am able to park it under the shelter. Still considering engine options. Definitely a V6 or V8 from the Nissan family. Anyone know of what has been done before? Really wish I had money to get this project moving, but still no luck on the job front. However I will do what I can while poor. Until next time. EDIT: All the mirrors have been held on by square drive screws, anyone know where to buy the square drive bits from? Haven't really looked yet to be honest. But if someone could tell me that would be super. =]
  11. Well, depending how cheaply, could be worth it. Trailer mish. Could be done in one (long) day even. If I get the trailer for the weekend I can even use it to move my other car to my new place. So could be the goods. Lemme know.
  12. Yes, please do. Can you remember if auto or manual? And whereabouts? Chur. =]
  13. Being scrapped. BUT. A better version is taking it's place. Keep an eye out for "Hayden's wagontastic KE70 #3". COMING SOON TO A PROJECT THREAD NEAR YOU.
  14. Small update, hopefully have a proper update (maybe even with pictures!) tomorrow. -Removed the bull bar, looks a lot better. -Have Recaro seats from OS-Triumph on their way. -Have installed 6x9s, sub and amp, and wired it all in. -Will be removing the canopy as soon as the tonneau (however that is spelt) cover I bought turns up. Is now my daily anyway, after I sold my KE70, but hopefully have a U11 Bluebird on the way for daily duties. If that is the case then this will becoming the immediate project. Just want to tidy it up, an engine conversion will be on the cards, but only once I can find money. Probs a VG30DE, VG30DET or VG30DETT. AWWWWW YEEEEAH! So if anyone knows of a cheap one, lemme know. That's all for now anyway. Chur.
  15. Does the Datsun 720 qualify for this meet? Haha. Or do I need to get a 6" lift kit first as suggested? On a more related note, I may have to find a way to work around previous engagements to make this work. If we start earlier in the day I may even be able to do both. Chur.
  16. Kind of hard to tell from those pictures how bad the door is, but that guard definitely looks like it would be cheaper to buy a second hand one rather than get it repaired. Depending how bad the door is, same with that. A lot of the cost in panelbeating comes in labour time swapping parts over and the rest, so the more yo do yourself, i.e. swapping over and stripping down the door and guard, the more money you will save. The door is probably just repairable however, so once you find a panelbeater you want, ask them, and if it is, strip the door down before you take it in, and tell them you will reassemble it yourself. My 2c. I can't recommend any panelbeaters in Auckland sorry, as I am in Whangarei.
  17. I'm not really sure. I'm willing to spend decent money on a good setup, however I don't have decent money at the moment, as I was made redundant not too long ago and haven't been able to find work again yet. However, get your mate to give me a price and I can consider my options.
  18. Looking for a SR20DE or DET to build up for my Datsun. Have found this one (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 450985.htm) which is in need of a rebuild. My question is, is there any differences, other than bolt on parts, i.e. in the block, between the 4wd and rwd engines? Cheers, Hayden. =]
  19. Everything was checked from the battery terminals. Will re-check again tomorrow, and give an update. Car is running sweet, but light is still on. I have been driving this almost every day since the problem has come up.
  20. Yeah, voltage was up around 14 ish, I checked with Dad as he was the one reading the meter. I just said 12+ as i wasn't sure on the exact number. It's a 4AGE as well. Internally regulated alternator. Any ideas on how to fix this?
  21. Hi guys, My charge light keeps staying on in my KE70. As I drove it home the other night, I noticed that my charge light was on. I immediately checked my alternator belt was on and tight, and it was, so all good there. When I indicated/braked however, the stereo would turn off, the car would keep running however. I think this may have been because of the draw the lights had on the battery. The closer I got to home (it's about 20km to my house) the more my lights and dash lights dimmed. When I got it home we sat it in the garage and checked the voltage across the bnattery terminals, and it was always 12v+ when running. I wasn't quite sure what was wrong, but I had a spare alternator at home which was good so swapped that in. Now everything is fine, no losing power in my lights and indicating/braking doesn't do anything. So not exactly suer what was/is wrong but it seems to have fixed it. HOWEVER. I now have my charge light on the dash light on permanently, even though all other symptoms/problems seem to have dissapeared. Any ideas? I checked all my fuses and none seem to be blown. Is there a relay somewher that I should check, and how do you check relays? Anyway, that's my essay done. I have tried to provide heaps of detail to make isolating the problem easier, but please ask if you want to know anything else, or want me to check something. Let me know what suggestions you have as to what might be the problem. Cheers, Hayden.
  22. Always keen, however Wednesdays are no good for me. So no go, for me.
  23. I can also help out if needed (probably not). But yeah, the offer is there.
