  1. aww lock the thread
  2. I forgot to mention the bit, where he was probing me for sharns. I accidentally let out that i "had one of these engines in an old startlet" Wow, did i regret that. so now it bounced between how much of a sleeper the corolla was to, fark that must go harrrrrd.. I'm like yeh goes alright. farrrrrk that must go harrrrrd... I do feel better now i've made my own barry sharn and you poor suckers have read it . In other news. dropped crank and block off to engine guy. to give one of the mains a quick zing as some junk have gone thru that bearing. block getting a quick hone. told him to put his head in sand about rest
  3. Wasn't planning on making a thread for this junk. but has a semi interesting story. and place to mock me @Stu about buying a 20v 4age. Since im diehard 16v smallport guy So i was after a cheap daily and this popped up local on trademe. in the action it said it had high idle and ran better when the plugs where swapped out, but still idled high. suggested not driving far. Ok bid sight unseen because cbf'd going to look and its cheap. plus worth a bit in parts, if all goes bad. End up winning auction for $1610. was about to pull out at this price.. So i get a ride with my good mate (we will just call her rangi for now) to go pick up. Roll up to where its parked on the side of the road. Get out, awww yeh nar nar looks a bit rough, ahh well. old mate comes out, says its not running right and is surprised anyone would pay that much for it. then proceeds to say how much of a sleeper it is. hands me the keys and say try start it. So give it a jam, thing barely kicks into life, running on one cylinder. this is about the time when im thinking maybe this is one of those times buying shit and hoping for the best isn't for me. Start poking around, find map sensor unplugged. no deal same thing. At this point ol mate offers me some tools to use. turns out he is an actual GC, just not mechanically minded. Take him up on his offer because too retarded to bring my own stuff. His lady friend comes out the the most freshest stanley too kit to come directly from mitre10 mega, no one even knows how to open it. Anyway i get straight to taking the plugs out. they must have around 200,000k's on them as the electrodes are half worn down. old mate proceeds to tell rangi and i how much of a sleeper it is. I find the 1 plug thats been firing. other 3 have gas on them. I decide to gap them down and swap the firing plug to another cylinder. as im smashing the plugs on the exhaust manifold old mate asks me if im a mechanic. "nar" get funny looks. reinstall plugs. same thing 1 cylinder firing. hmmm take them back out, the good plug was firing still. hmm ok 3 dead plugs seems weird. but oh well go down road buy more. Somewhere along the line old mate told us it just started running bad when driving home one day, and he had at least 2 different places try to fix it and take all the cash. I put fresh plugs in. fire it up boom all 4 cylinders. but wow 5000rpm idle. ol mate proceeds to say how much of a sleeper it is. spend a little time trying to find vac leaks. At this point was running out of time as rangi needed to be somewhere. say to the guy im just going to drive it. hes sketching out its going to blow up and im going to crash or something. but rangi and I both said at same time we had driven worse. get some more interesting looks.. so i give him his cash. He says he was borderline going to scrap it. and gives me 500bucks back, actual GC. So jump in. go to drive off allll the blue smoke. i lose rangi in said blue smoke. this goes on for some km's , till i nang it and it clears up. just shutting it down at traffic lights because 5000rpm idle. make it home. msg old mate, is amazed that i made it home. Pretty much had decided i was just going to rip engine out and give it a freshen up, since has over 300k on it. fix all the issues while its out rather than fixing it bit by bit. fwd sucks High idle. some goose had taken the top off vac chamber and somehow managed to put the little bracket between the halves ?? noticed wasn't getting up to temp on drive home. when pulled head off noticed some weird stuff in head gasket hmm that'll do it Was just going to throw some new bearings and rings at it. then remembered had some smallport/silvertop rods hanging around, so swapped them over I thought these heads were spose to be amazing from factory. but seen some things i didn't like and it got the better of me.. sharp edges on short turn radius. and shape edge around valves in chamber. put a nice radius on both awaiting parts now. this is probably the beginning and end of this thread..
  4. yeh try run the sense wire directly back to battery on its own wire. see what it does
  5. @Roman Dave getting all the credit, with his following of fellow graph theorists
  6. Ive tired stuff in the past. only very significant change in afr or timing has an effect. timing is it the sweet spot, few degrees either way no change. afr; 11afr right up to near 14afr same power. done over 300 runs on this thing so know how it behaves . the biggest effect on power is oil temp. and of course if tied to dyno different which it never moved off. This plot below I went full retard and forgot i loaded the normal tune back on at end of day. soo the afr was a lot richer on the day 2 blue run. still only maybe 1kw change. oil temp makes up to 3kw change. 80 - 100c
  7. maybe thats the yo-yo bounce, like on old mates one in the vid a few pages back
  8. That intake with or without filter makes same power. so yeh just ran it as is. Looks like if got all the lengths exactly the same. (since the opening shape and diameter have an effect) the roman dave, pvc with full bell and my normal intake would all be pretty much the same power throughout. think the only reason my normal intake looks sightly better is its acting slightly shorter than the other 2 (dave +45 and the pvc w/ plastic bell)
  9. Here we go, 2 days of dyno testing and even longer editing. @Roman also made some science graphs with the dyno data. maybe he will post them up here.
  10. maybe put some oxy in instead of nitrogen. bit more travel would be nice. but some more compression damping while retaining the lack of rebound should make it fly and land like a trophy truck. Its borderline that already, so with some minor tweaks...
  11. / anyone got some OG struts that haven't had the guts replaced with an insert? dodgy re-valve plus weld on schrader valve for that nitro compressed air charge @Dudley wants to give you money for them
  12. grinder and mig says anything will fit.
  13. The cams make it lovely driving anything under 30kph, and the gearing makes it a delight to drive over 80kph
  14. Been daily driving this junk. Its amazingly horrible Likes the cold. 154kw at wheels, uncorrected 15 deg c
  15. done most of the testing over the last 2 days. going to take awhile to put all the info together. found some interesting stuff. the peaches didn't do as bad as you would think haha
  16. Glass come in different speeds. If you have something that's likely to have a quick spike in current above ya 5amp but normally the draw is less. you would use a slow blow. Otherwise use normal fast blow.
  17. new contender; the internal bellmouthed peach slices
  18. Along with. " I don't know how it works, but I know how to make it work." you have a winning combo
  19. Now i'm going to have nightmares Will likely do the testing next week after roman's fine creation shows up. Unless someone else has anything to offer, can wait a little longer. But no panic will probably do a part 2 as already a lot to get through with my horrible creations alone
  20. I hope these come with some kinda ms paint graph. or at least a sump screw driver to aid installation
  21. This ^ If someone wants to send me some i can adapt them to test. I have some silvertop ones but are getting to be a bit of a straw, due to the smaller diameter. so lost motivation to make adaptors
  22. I'm more of a build it, test it, then throw it in the bin kinda guy. But if yourself or anyone else wants to use the data from the results, be my guest.
  23. Haven't got anything to directly compare plastic to ali. as the ali is 53mm id the plastic is 51mm id. metal and plastic people need to standardize their sizes hah. keen to test if can find something though. think one of my cams does 200fps, probably not fast enough but will give it a jam @BobbyBreeze Happy to test your stuff at a later date. The first lot of tests I was trying to keep basic as possible. Slowly cutting a straight pipe down to show the reflected wave tuning Then the same straight pipe at a fixed length with a range of bellmouths. catching the 2nd harmonic. these can be compared to my normal intake with taper Would be nice to test all of the above with tapered runners. But I think combining the above findings, then adding taper and fine tuning maybe the way to go. without spending days making bin bound tapered test runners. From all the runner calculators, the harmonic my normal intake is catching 8200ish rpm should be the 2nd harmonic. cutting roughly 100mm out should get the 3rd harmonic to the same 8200ish rpm. so yep should see both these line up with i do the cutting down the straight pipe test. @Roman said the same thing re intake size, which i agree with. Both suspect the big bellmouths may not do a lot for my engine, due to the runners being pretty large already. im really interested just to see what a boring old straight pipe does vs an intake i've spent $$$ on and days making with taper and good bellmouths
  24. Made some basic shapes. Plan is to start with the straight pvc 51mm id. no bellmouth at 205mm long, cut it down 20mm at a time till end up with nothing. Then move back to current 185mm trumpet length and start to try different diameters and bellmouths. big diameter shiny pipe 57.5mm id. - no bell silicone bend solid bend horrible 90 cast bend will probably have to mess with length a bit on the bends to get the harmonic the same pvc with sharp half bell pvc with bigger half bell - will reshape after testing above pvc basic cone - same as above pvc with full plastic bell Would like to test some smaller tubes also, if anyone has some 2" tube (should have 47 -48mm id) to donate to the cause or cheap keen to grab it. material doesn't matter, exhaust tube fine long as isn't rusty. 4x 185mm long After the basic stuff will move onto other stuff. Thoughts?
