  1. I have some coin saved up for a BIG 'MURCAN TURCK but maybe I should just buy a 'tang instead.

Because theoretically, if I import, comply and then sell it for big bucks, I could still buy a BIG 'MURCAN TURCK.

  2. Yeah, I wasn't going to look at the car again for another 9-12 months, but peer pressure (and a repair quote that came in well under what I initially thought) made me do it.

Engine builder recommended 1.1mm or thicker headgasket so will see what Toyota can supply.

The crank from the donor AE101 GZE was in better condition, so ended up using it, and the rods from that motor instead.

Set of 193b's sitting in my wardrobe doing nothing at all that would surely be lush.

Hmmmmm. Guessing these are N/A suited? Let me do some research and get back to you Richy.

@Firetruck I don't really want to go too extreme to be honest, keen on having a tidy looking car externally with a couple of small mods to give it more shove. I keep telling myself (maybe poorly judged) that if I wanted to build a foooooly siiiiick MR2 I should have started with a rusty high-km $3000 shell instead of a low-km tidy $12,000 one out of Japan, and then it would be ripe to chuck in a 7A-GTE and Link. As it stands, it still feels a bit sacrilegious going down the path I already have...

  3. Lancer Evos (I-III shape) are making their big comeback now. Just look at the numbers that are currently flooding Trademe.

I even saw a typical 'flatpeaker' and his boys driving around in one, except it was shiny and fully stock standard. Either they were on their way home having just picked it up from Buy Right Cars, or they'd finally come to the realisation that stock standard trumps shitty mods all day.

  4. Is it in Aussie? Talk to @Taistorm perhaps - think he is bringing over a wagon from WA.

Dereg papers and bill of lading will be useful, stuff that proves you are the owner of the car essentially.

If already damaged, the car will most likely be imported as such and flagged in the system and a certifier would inspect it before repairs can commence. I could give you the contact details of a friend in Hamilton who does border entry and compliance, he might be able to give you some advice.

  5. A mate of mine just sold one recently after owning one for several years (Sean in Wellington - Al, I think you might know him). I originally picked it up in Auckland and stored it for a few weeks before he came to grab it.

They are quite economical, which is great for around town, but are a bit ungainly when cornering due to being taller than they are wide. Also the shittier the tyres, the more sledging that occurs. I remember experiencing a bad lockup coming down the Ngauranga gorge in the wet in his one.

It was auto as well which did take some of the fun factor out of driving it. But yeah, they have a responsive little 4 cylinder 1.3 turbo and a surprising amount of room inside, easy to park too which is good. They share a platform with a bunch of other Toyotas and Daihatsus so parts are cheap and plentiful and in the time he had it not much went wrong except for a bit of paint fade and an accessory belt needed to be replaced.

    Get one!

...or if you can wait a few months while I try and source a windscreen for this blasted Alto you could eventually buy that instead. Lawl!

  6. I bought some rare catalogues from Gavin/Myles recently. Had to fend off autobids from a well known foamer in the process.

Anyway, they invited me out to pick up the books and browse their collection of sweet 'tangs, will see if I can get some photos for the piners here.

  7. Voted Stoddard. It might be busier but at least the cars will be somewhat in view and not tucked out of sight behind the building.

I believe BNT also has a scrap metal bin full of old brake rotors and discarded bellhousings that could be awarded to the pesky resident of Ellerslie for his efforts at chasing us away.

As per project thread it's road legal,  have been going through my emails and text correspondence with compliance place, can't believe it took so long for what, after the panel work, was so little.

Anywho, made a cameo at auckland burgermeat on wednesday night, looking forward to a drive or few this weekend

1GGZE- what triggers the supercharger clutch to lock on. Theres a supercharger relay pin on the ecu. Is that triggering it via tps or similar or does it run off a switch on the accelerator pedal?

Pretty sure it works like a 4A-GZE one, the ECU triggers that relay based on intake manifold vacuum.

When vacuum drops below 8" the supercharger clutch is engaged. The clutch stays on until intake manifold vacuum has risen to over 10" for a period of 5 seconds. This time delay was added to avoid cycling of the clutch during shifts and momentary throttle transitions.
