    Urethane, Nolathane?

    Thanks for all the info guys, think I'll source some urethane stock and have a little play. I still occasionally still use tool steel on my lathe (showing my age again!) and suspect a similar shaped tip to what I've used on nylon would be a good starting point. Will let you know the results. Re: 11; I'm not anticipating it being a "difficult and dangerous" exercise. (If you want difficult and dangerous try cutting a twin start thread on a piece of 316 stainless!).
  3. I'm trying to buy some urethane or nolathane stock so I can turn up my own mounts and bushes. Does anyone have any idea where I can buy some?

  5. Like I said I'll start my own thread on the subject, once again my apologies again for not doing it sooner. The elephant in the room, (who's existence you deny?) is possibly the most pertinent issue that we all face, i.e. to modify any part of our cars we have to deal with the LVVTA). If we ignore it it won't go away!
  6. Fair point. No offence intended to the brick he sounds like an OK guy, I should have started my own thread on the subject. I will however point out the ambiguity in the available information as shown in this post; i.e. we have two conflicting answers for the OP's original question?
  7. Sadly they don't; many of us have experience of the current cert system being a vague, unwieldy, ambiguous process. Why do you think there is such a shortage of certifiers, particularly those willing to put there name on scratch builds? Please don't get me wrong; I'm not knocking the certifiers (they have my admiration) I'm just suggesting the system they are forced to work with is in a mess. After 40 plus years of modifying cars I have difficulty in meekly rolling over and subscribing to the theory that the LVVTA is protecting us all from ourselves. Surely this subject is worthy of informed debate and surely "Oldschool" is a more than suitable forum.

  11. A larger master cylinder would produce less pressure and require even more pedal effort, (the relationship between bore size and hydraulic pressure is an inverse one). With the Mk 1 running a dual m/cyl you would need to run two hydrovacs (remote boosters) and it would be a big step backwards in pedal feel. I like the idea of using an under the dash mastervac/master cylinder setup from a forward control van, the Hiace springs to mind?

  13. Most Hydrovac input rods are welded by the OE manufactures at the clevis/pedal end. Surely it's acceptable to duplicate the process when shortening?
  14. Despite being something of a newbee to this MB I get the impression cletus is a big boy who relishes a robust debate can more than well take care of himself. One of the fundamental cornerstones of the country we live in is the right to hold and express one's opinion. As most know the cert process has a number of "grey areas' that all parties involved struggle with; to suggest that all cert questions have a simple answer is naive, to suggest that one shouldn't question those answers is draconian.

Just covered the finished front end in shrink-wrap for storage until needed……… I know I should be working on the rear end but Rigamortice and I couldn’t resist a little play with our new (i.e. old) triple pack of DCOE Webers! (I will point out at this point that I’m in the dogbox with the lovely Mrs sr2 after she overheard me explaining to an old mate that triple DCOE’s were quite possibly better than sex!). Closer examination of the original 28/36 DCD and the Kel-co manifold revealed the huge amount of work I’d done (all by hand, no air tools in those days) matching ports with the then already modified yella-terra head……….. Easy to see the difference when you line up both setups….. I’ve made the call that despite Rigamortice having fallen in love with her new totally impractical induction system we’ll initially refurbish and run the DCD system until we have run in the new yet to be rebuilt motor and have attached both registration and dodgy WOF stickers to the old girls non safety glass windscreen.

  18. Please don't get me wrong; I'm not taking shots at you mate. In fact after browsing your posts and huge contribution to this MB over the last few years I'm rating you as one of the good guys, (to the point where with Neil F retired I'll probably be booking you for my next cert!). I just have to ask, is that an official LVVTA policy or just a personal opinion?

  20. Sorry if I’m straying slightly off topic but one of my passions is saving old tools. My 1930’s record No.4 vice (it was my granddad's) was not handling the latest project well, I needed something bigger. Scored a very rusty but gorgeous 60 plus? Year old 6” American Wilton for $55. You need two hands and a strong back to lift this old beauty, it’s got almost as much cast iron in it as Rigamortice's short-block! 24 hours in the Phosphoric pickle bath…… Some etch primer…….. Two coats of epoxy enamel, some Moly grease and a little TLC……… Not only have I the vice from hell this piece of history has gone from the scrap pile to having a life expectancy that will outlive most of us reading this thread.
  21. Oops…….. Rigamortice and I had a few medicinal bourbons in the man cave last night and accidently bought these. Some say… the sound of 3 dual choke DCOE Weber’s is better than sex……….. (Gawd, the Trademe addiction strike again; here’s hoping Mrs sr2 isn’t following this thread or looking too closely at the bank statements!).
  22. Looking forward to seeing it. I ran a 2.4 YB Holbay Cosworth in a Sierra Targa car for a number of years until I re-powered it with a 4G63 . How could you not help but fall in love with a motor developed by a small team in Northampton that went on to become an international giant killer. A YB Cossi Mk1 'tina has got my interest!
