  1. have been doing a bit here in there on the ST90 since finishing the CB50 for DGR last weekend. the wiring i did was rushed and hori as shit, and also took up all the room in the frame which ideally i wanted for storage (of like 1 can of beer lel). i also like the look of the stock aircleaner but cant use it as its way to small for this 150cc engine / carb doesnt line up with it or anything. so i gutted it out and turned it into a good space for everything electrical. this is ideal as if anything goes wrong in the electrical department its only 2 screws to open it and i can swap anything out. i now have this space in the frame where i will likely make a little plastic container and hold tools / spares / maybe another little fuel bottle also wanted to hold my phone for gps / filming purposes / wank factor and got this aliexpress ram mount rip off. very good quality actually, except the rubber balls arent as rubbery as my genuine ram mount. now i can pretend to me a 1200GS also just grabbed one of these KTM tool kits of trademe, bloody cheap at $44 and has most things, will just add a few to it. much more prepared this year
  2. grab a new set of points while your at it man, makes a huge difference, if you completely disassemble the points that are on it at the moment you will likely see some big pitting holes in the centre of the tungsten or whatever diamond spec hardness that shit is and will likely be slightly sharkstoothed as well. points are generally very cheap (sub $30) and are a consumable part that isnt replaces as often as they should. also condenser can cause missing and shit at high revs, unsure if yours is attached to the coil or the points, but probably another part thats worth replacing to get it running mint.
  3. pretty sure the rsa would do a mega brain at 40 peeps, there wasnt even that many chairs. maybe ask them if we give them $400 bucks can they put on a marae spec feed of blood and guts for 40 people they might be able to organise it. im just gunna go with the flow, id say we will disperse pretty well when we get to hicks, but yea a phone call to tell the razza a few jims will be turning up wont be a bad idea
  4. so i have been smashing a few nights on this CB50 to get it ready for DGR and its finally sorted. I wanged the XL100 engine in it i got from @kdotlowe. the XL inlet manifold wouldnt work with the CB 50 so i made one up and had midge weld it for me I also whacked the 3.25-17" nitto tyres i got on with some new tubes, they juuuuuust sneak in the front forks Made up a new exhaust using the CB50 header which is suprisingly the same diameter as the xl100 header, but i wanted low pipe, and wanged an aliexpress megaphone type muffler on it as you can see below. this got it all going but it wouldnt run well past 3/4 throttle as it had a lean bog obviously from the uncorking of the inlet and the now pretty much straight though exhaust. tried playing with the needle height but it needed a bigger main jet. its a Keihin carb and all the spare keihin jets i had werent the right size but surprisingly the stash of mikuni jets i had from the VM22 on the trombone fit, so i went from a 98 main to a 105 main and it sorted and pulls like a schoolboy now. well thats after i got a new set of points and a new coil / condensor from malcolm at anaconda. the CB50 must have the condensor under the flywheel with the points but the XL needs it up my the coil, so in short it needed a new xl100 6v ac coil. so that got it running good but the clutch was slipping bad, it had new clutch cover bolts and gasket so someone had been in there so i drained the oil as it needed a change and had and went investigating. whoever was in there didnt tighten the clutch springs up all the way so there was the problem, the clutch plates are also pretty dank looking so i swapped the plates from the other XL engine i have that has a bung kickstart shaft. the spare engine also had the tacho drive whereas this one didnt and its actually a super easy swap so i did that and swapped the side covers for the tacho drive hole too. all sorted! so now it runs good and is pretty much finished, i just dont have the headlight on as i need to test that the XL engine isnt overcharging as they are an unregulated AC circuit for the headlight, once i can confirm that isnt going to blow expensive 6v headlight bulbs ill wang it back in and do some wheelies, which it actually does pretty easy with the CB50 gearing on it! all ready for DGR this weekend
  5. we use helicopters quite often in forestry, not just for spraying but for flying deadman anchor logs across gullies into farm land and my cable hauler contractors often use choppers for flying strawline across gullies because a chopper can do it in ten mins where as men carrying it would take 2-3 hours, if thats slowing down a entire logging operation that has a cost of around $10k per day the $1000.00 for the helicopter is well spent. you should be able to get your stuff done cheap as chips with a chopper, as mentioned above go talk to your local outfit and find out when they have a job nearby so they can just quickly do it on their way back to base, talk to them about how they want it rigged up and get it all pre stropped and rigged up for them and it will literally take like ten mins and for 2-3 trips and save you soooooo many kilojoules
  6. are we going to need to cap the number or bikes? maybe something to think about so shit doesn't get bigger than we can handle? id say with 30+ we will probably self separate into two or more groups, so could have a support vehicle follow each group
  7. yea one tube should suffice unless you have different size wheels, can stash a wee puncture repair kit as well as your unlikely to have 2 punctures in one day. i wouldnt stress too much about tyre levers as there will be a bunch of us with levers, and you can get away with a screwdriver and spark plug tool for that. correct spanners to adjust chain / axle and remove front or rear wheel, depending on your bike this is usually 10/12 and like a 17 or 20 for axle nut. it is very likely you will need to adjust your chain 2-3 times on the trip. a small nut fucker never goes a miss i wouldnt get too worried bringing a lot of oil, especially if your bike doesnt already drink a lot, stuff like a ct110 wont need any, if chinese engine maybe 200-300 mls but again probs not needed. def a spare plug and plug spanner, find a small bike tool kit where the plug spanner is also a flat head and phillips screwdriver. i wouldnt worry too much about sockets, spanners will do the trick. make sure you have the required tools to pull a carb off and whip the jets out in case it sucks in a bit of shit. if you make sure you have the bare minimum for all that listed above you will find you actually need fuck all tools. there will be a big assortment of tools chucked in the support wagon not so much for during the day as that will slow us down but if someone has a major we can fix it that night and will have the shit to do so. ill bring a big assortment for the wagon and things like some brackets and bolts and shit incase mufflers rattle off and that sort of shit but again if we have those sort of issues its likely going to be on the first day and we have raizers workshop / welder that night so should be all gravy. oh and cable ties, fuck loads of cable ties, they fix everything. tl:dr dont go crazy as you dont want to way yourself down, but bring enough to change a plug, adjust chain and fix a flatty and you will be sweet.
  8. youll be right mate, vespa isnt gunna be rung out like gyro was. Just make sure you bring some of this so ya dont lose ya nuts
  9. for most people they will be fine, but for going full hunoos passing every other bike racing down the motu there is a high chance that the extreme velocity combined with fat cunt on the seat and limited suspension travel will cause said swappa crate to explode
  10. Remembering that this year if shits gunna break its going to break on the first day, as thats when mechanical weakness will let go as its first big stretch / roughest road and also the most "difficult" terrain to ride. the benefit of doing the trip in the opposite direction this year is we will have gisborne / raizers workshop to fix non terminal issues so i think one should be enough. just dont do a @MopedNZ or @Shakotom and crash, dont do @64vauxhall and bring a pile of crap that had not run properly ever, dont do a @doozi and bring no spare tubes, or a @blizzo and bring a bike that has a tank full of rust that just blocks fuel filters. tick all that shit off and you should be sweet
  11. Holy shit @Chris.QCR how did they get the chrome off those rims, i blasted my old ct rims and it made them dull but didnt get rid of it like on those! also on helmets i just got a bell MX-9, pretty cheap being under $299, i actually got this one for considerably less than that, super comfy like all bell helmets and the best thing is the visor! see ya later glasses / goggles
  12. paaaaaaaid, also paid $3 for this obnoxiously loud horn to say hello to locals for this trip
  13. I will have my PLB with me, I take in on most rides just in case. i slept on a wooden floor inside with nothing but the clothes on my back last year and was fine. I think the key is to be drunk enough. Greg had that plan locked well in last year, he just passed out on the hard wooden deck, someone was kind enough to throw a sleeping bag on him.
  14. added some extra range to the ST with a genuine Honda aux fuel can from a CT, now i have a whopping 5 litres in total fuck i cannot wait for this ride!
  15. I got all horny for the east cape ride the other day so decided to do a bit of work on the ST to get it cape ready. Finally fabbed up a nice solid mount to hold my genuine honda auxiliary fuel can, have just under 5 litres of total capacity now. Was trying to figure out what to do with the OG air cleaner as i want it on there as it looks cool. I have ordered a very upright tight bend inlet manifold to bring the carb forward so i can squeeze a filter sock in there tucked between the frame and the back of the OG air cleaner housing. Plan is to remove the guts of the filter housing and use it to house the CDI, Coil, Reg/Rec etc and maybe a few emergency tools / spare CDI / Coil etc. This think was leaking a bit of oil from when i built the engine and was jumping in and out of second gear. put the oil leak down to a shitty chinese o ring for the oil return so i pulled the engine to bits and sorted that and used a think smear of 3 bond on the gaskets for extra goodness. i hate using RTV but often chinese engines require a bit cos of shit machining. I noticed the shift drum / shift star had a bit too much lateral movement, so i pulled the located bolt that holds it in on the other side of the engine above the sprocket and noticed it didnt have a washer on it which it needs, so re installed with a washer and hopefully that solves the gear jumping issue, really dont want to split the cases again. holy fuck this thing had some boogy when i rode it (just not in second gear obvs) feels much faster than my YX140 in the trombone got that all back together now, just waiting on some New HD clutch springs to turn up few little things to sort for the cape is some baggage, i have a tank bag that mounts to those strops on the frame, and thinking of getting an aliexpress handlebar bag to put on the bars. im going full minimalist on this trip and dont want to wear a backpack. the pine is strong.
  16. also, gunna grab one of these to mount on my handle bars to keep my spare pair on undies and beer in. good bai for east capers https://www.aliexpress.com/item/four-Colors-crossbody-shoulder-bag-utility-waist-bag-mtb-road-bicycle-bicicleta-handlebar-bag-multi-pocket/32693092430.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.87.b160126220V1yY&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10065_10068_5723115_5910015_10547_5723715_5890015_10548_5723815_10696_5723215_5724015_5723415_10084_10083_5722215_5970015_10618_5724315_10307_5724215_5724115_5723315_5723615_5722315_10059_5723015_5722115_100031_5723915_5725015_10103_5725115_5980015_5724915_5990015_5722415,searchweb201603_54,ppcSwitch_7&algo_expid=055a521e-c774-4595-a77d-da27da59a890-11&algo_pvid=055a521e-c774-4595-a77d-da27da59a890&priceBeautifyAB=0
  17. something like this https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/fire-gone-fire-suppressant-454g/p/215603 these 0.3ABE size ones are what we make forestry doodes carry http://www.timbersaws.co.nz/product-group/147/category/923
  18. Any blackwoods type health and safety place will have those little 400gm extinguishers. We make contractors tree fallers carry them on their belts in summer months. I might grab one and mount to my bike actually that’s probs not a bad idea. most summer trail rides make people have them, just tape them to fork tubes usually.
  19. GiZ pics of front rocker arm mod jim, like the one brendon has on one of his bikes?
  20. Yea everything runs like island time, stress doesn’t exist and no one is in a rush, including people making the food
  21. Yea I’m locked in, St90 is not finished nor tested. If it’s not ready I’ll just take the trombone, it survived raglan (just) so it will survive this. Those corrugations on the whanga coast were deadly. I’m planning on not having a rack on my st as it’s gunna be a bit too hard / cbf. Gunna mount my Honda aux fuel can and wear a small backpack for spare change of undies / tubes and a few tools. Will throw a small 30l dry bag with sleeping stuff in the support vehicle
  22. or buy a brand new pit bike one so you have good threat and extend it, think thats probs what i would do http://stormparts.co.nz/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24_241&products_id=24102&zenid=kv9v6m150ktc485hikscgpeeu3
  23. can you not get an el generco honda tube (dax / chaly / cub / ct / ss / probably even xr) and whack it in, even if you have to drill the hole in the triple bigger. you still got bits from that xl100 you pulled apart for me? could see if that works
  24. Well the young fulla is almost two so probs time to get him on a bike. Always wanted him to having something old and lush and when @UTERUS chucked his z50r up for salwith I grabbed it. Gunna give it a full strip down, rebuild the engine and re spray it in the correct “Blaze red” colour which is orangy red as seen in the photo below. Its a 1982 model, pretty excited to get it restored tbh
  25. Hey lads I’m sure I can still supply a support vehicle. I’ll just run it by the boss that’s all and might just have to give the office a copy of said drivers license for insurance purposes.
