Nah no over the top here @Seedy Al, I think we just want everyone to be aware that it’s a pretty big mission and don’t bring a complete pile of shit. We had a pretty good system down for breakdowns by the end of it last year. No hard feelings if ya bike breaks etc, that’s a given taking shit bikes in this sort of mission, just make sure you have the basics to handle minor repairs (tubes etc) other than that we can trailer it to the lunch stop / evening stop and fix properly, we just can’t have too many delays during the day when we have big distances to cover.
but actually it’s fuckinf run just riding scooters and drinking booze, you would love the shit out of it

how do i choose what bike to bring this year, st90 would be fastest, 140cc cub would be fun but punishing, or CB50 for the challenge of doing it on a 50
-
Yea man I’ll likely haul a trailer and can fit scoots in the back of the Ute also. Depending how many other peoples shit I’m taking up will determine how many spare bikes I bring. Ask raizer about that spanny, those Ali ones are pretty average and you would need to re jet so it doesn’t lean out and kill it. He has technigas ones pretty cheap, could probs flick the Ali one off on the tard

Probs need to note you need the dio mount to hack, throw the nifty one in the bin
-
Nah no photos of mounts soz, I just hacked and welded where needed. Would almost be easier to cut the joining truss bits off and just start with the “tubes” and use some SHS to joint together, wound up being quite offset to make it all line up lush.
This thing went pretty hard for what it was to be honest , I rode for a bit then flicked on trademe and sold it for $1200

Yea bart a dio would be lush!! Chuck a $30 AliExpress performance variator on it and as you said a belt, fresh piston will never hurt. I’d happily smash the journey on a dio. As you say you see so much more at this speed!! I’d you got your scoot to Wellington I could grab it when I’m down there for work and bring it up with me from the mighty Manawatu

Yea this def doesn’t need to scare people off / too much thought in it, and the whole point in it like said is to do it on shit small bikes.
i guess what we are getting across is make sure that bike isn’t an FA50, as hills would kill it. Modern CVT scoots are fine for this, a stock standard 50cc 4 stroke ruckus did it fine last year, the best thing about modern 50s is they tend to be reliable.
Jamie had all his fuel and shit under the seat and then wore a backpack with his clothes, couple of pairs of undies and a couple of tee shirts and your sweet, I didn’t bring any wet weathers or anything last year. If we take my Ute we will have a canopy to put everyone’s bedding / tents and shit in, but stuff you may need on the ride needs to be on your person (basic tools, fuel, spare tube etc) as if that stuff happens the best thing to do is have 1 or 2 people stay with you while you fix and the rest of the group keep going and catch up with them at the next stop. It means you may miss 90% of a lunch stop but doesn’t slow anyone down.
I think taking my Ute is a really good idea actually, it has a fixed VHF radio and I have a portable I can bring that tee leading bike can take, so tail can talk to the head. It also has fleetlink radio and a PLB so we can get contact out of cell reception / pull PLB in case of emergency

There isn’t that much gravel bart, maybe 15kms of shit deep gravel then the motu is super hard pack swept gravel kinda just like concrete. Jamie has an SJ50 scoot and didn’t slow us down.

I don’t wanna put anyone off coming or anything if you have a bike that’s too slow / unreliable aka @64vauxhall your gunna have a bad time, and so will everyone else waiting for you, unless you have a lush vity as a backup bike.

There is a big difference between a bike that maxes 60 but shit up hills and one that has a top speed of 60 but still pulls hills good. I don’t thi k you would want anything slower than the modded SJ to be honest. Our CT’s / Logan’s can do 80-90 but we cruise at 70, and that’s why the love the big trips. A small 50cc tapped out WOT to hold 60 for 650km is likely gunna die. Lifan everything / steal a mudbug. This is also a great ride for small bikes, Bloke on A GN250 has a great time.

Blood and guts jim!
If we take my Ute as support vehicle we will have bush radio to tell the mad dog loggers to fuck off. If not I can bring a portable / we won’t be going fast enough to cause trouble anyway.

Group food would just be another mindfuck and probably take longer tbh, that trike down food place was a joke, I’d say just hope we don’t have that / bring lots of snacks and durries

To be honest i Would be very interested in going anti clockwise this year, I think it would solve a few problems
- everyone would be fresh and alert for the most technical part of riding of the whole trip
- we will have a bit more time to do that long Motu / rere falls part of the ride as we won’t be rushing to get back so people can get on the road
- it would mix it up a bit for those that did it last year
- the last “night” could be a massive pissup with everyone staying at the same spot at hicks bay
so yea I think that could be a good option. Main benefit is allowing more time for the coolest part of the ride, and will give it a bit more time if people have issues. It also puts us in gizzy after the first day which would be ideal for fixing first day issues as we will have raizers workshop, rather than fixing shit with flax and nut fuckers at hicks bay.
tell me I’m wrong
k thx

Leave approved by missus, I’m in!

ill put my leave in with the missus now. Will probs bring ST90 if the build proves reliable on rides leading up to it. if not i have XR250 as backup but i feel thats cheating. @Dolan has a CT110 now and i reckon he would piss cheese at this ride so will try egg him on. keen for same gizzy accomodation, keen to not sleep on wooden floor at hicks bay, might bring a bed roll this time. ill be driving my work ute (new ranger) up, ill check our insurance policy but if its insured for randoms im more than happy for someone sensible to drive that as the support vehicle. has canopy so means we can throw gear / bedding / booze etc in it rather than load the bikes up too much. seig fuck

Out of curiosity whats the go with us wearing vests and that massive gang situation up them ways ?
Yea man i rocked my bum pinchers vest which is a large black and white patch and i had no negativity etc. although i was riding a red bike with a red helmet and red bag, lucky colour choice for that part of the country, i had about 16 hearty as seigs thrown up at me throughout the journey.

Sooo decided about a fortnight ago I needed to rip into this XR and give it a good tidy up, have ordered all new bearings and bushes, fork kits etc. gunna just tidy everything and bring it back to its former glory but not with the red seat and blue features
The stripping really is the easy part. I have all alloy bits a good buff with scourer pads and a very casual low effort polish
once the frame was completely bare I sent it to the sandblasters and then straight to powder coat where it has a phosphate rust cover, a zinc rust preventative powder coat and then an arctic white UV resistant top coat
Even managed to get the engine back in without chipping anything.

so after some pretty cool missions pesting on the ct in the last 6 months -
So after some long thought I have decided to get rid of it for a couple of reasons, A, i have too many bikes. B, its worth a lot of money (comparatively speaking). C, its a bit slow. D, i wanted a slighty larger dual sport bike and E, im a bit tall for it and have to have the bars raked forward on a massive angle. So in trademe it went and it is now sold for a very tidy sum.
So that got me onto what i replace it with, im a Honda fan boy so it started there and also i wanted to spend fuck all. Was looking for road legal XR250s for a while when i noticed this haggard as fuck one on trademe local, so i popped down for a look thinking it was going to be rooted
was owned by a british expat who had had it for the last 5 or so years and his mate had it before that since pretty much new. it has been road legal since 1993 (its a 1991 XR250R), the fact its an R is quite ideal as it has no battery to go flat and is a bit lighter. Turns out its got super low kms for one of these, genuine 11,000kms, mechanically it is ace and has no smoke or anything. the guy was a bit of a dweeb that thought he would make it look better by rattle canning the faded plastic black, so it needs a full aesthetic tidy up. he had the airbox and stuff so that will all go back on, so after a short test ride where i determined it went very hard for what it is and suspected a 280cc upgrade i grabbed it
on the trailer
since getting it home i have got some second hand side cover plastics en route, have ordered a polisport enduro headlight setup, CRF250 white front guard and a second hand rear guard which @Shakotom is gunna be the man and collect for me.
I pulled the carb apart and the main jet is drastically bigger than stock and pilot one size bigger than stock so i think the feeling of a 280cc kit might be right, the cycleworks exhaust is also an added bonus, and the fact the entire thing cost me $1200 with rego on hold.
Plan is to finish the ST90 100% and push that in the corner then strip the XR back to bare frame, slap some black paint on it, assemble with new plastics and replace some bearings and shit.
i already sanded the tank right back and it has the yellow fuel stains that these all get so will get a cover off ebay for it, might go with a white/black/grey color scheme. then go smash some cool trails on it! just need @Dolan to get a 250 now too

So my upgraded shocks from dratv turned up today so I did a little work on the st tonight. Rear brake Cam is siezed so I need to pull that apart. Other that brakes it’s just fuel tank, wiring and zorst until this thing is finished now. Oh and footpegs which are on their way.
a bit unsure how to mount zorst. It’s gunna be custom made of stainless, needs to finish before the shock ideally. Probably end up drilling a hole in the frame and mounting somewhere like this or slightly lower than this

i have had pretty good patina success on both the rusty trombone and the st90 by giving it all a nice light wet sand with 1000grit, then a hard cut and a polish then a rub down with teflon type marine wax. the c50 is gunna be extreme patina tho, speaking of -
gave this the the chop chop, for being mega surface rusty this thing is pretty solid and has no holes. Looking at brendon from QCRs c90 as inspiration i want to do similar with a bit of a twist. going to keep narrow 2.25" front tyre on the skinny 1.2 c50 rim and have whacked a c90 1.40 rim on the rear and will eventually run a 2.75 or 3.00 china tyre similar in style to the front. a old style bridgestone or whatever they are would look sick but probs pretty spendy. will jam some of the flat ribbed for extra please side covers from craze bali on as well. will give this thing a good wet sand when i get a spare hour or so and see what it comes up like, grey should come through a bit better
in other scoot news i have waggys rv50 here getting the shit engine mounting re done and a brand new lifan 110, have got new location all mocked up, hopefully finish it at nights this week
ST90 is just waiting on new shocks from murica and a couple of spokes to be made for the rear wheel then will look more complete, i brought a massive tank liner kit as i have 4 average bike fuel tanks i need to clean, etch and line
and last of all i havnt even collected the CB50 yet but today i aquired a 1976 xl175 that was complete and a good runner but a VMX mate stripped part of it for some stuff he needed and was getting rid of the rest very cheap. will probs give the engine a wee freshen and jam it in the CB. dont know much about these engines, dont even know if it will fit, pretty sure they are CDI, im guessing will be shitty 6 volt which is gay, maybe some kind of 12 stator will fit? these things i do not know but im sure i will find out.
