  2. Discussion //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/50926-jordons-1974-procrastinated-ke20-discussion/ Thought i had started a build thread on here for this but couldn't seem to find it, anyway here's the story so far Started a few years ago now!I i was looking fora clean ke70 on a college budget when corolla prices were on the rise. My ladies brother had one of the nicest ke70s ive seen and thought i need one of those, came across this ke20 on tardme. didn't really grab my attention to start with but after seeing a few ke70s that had 'minimal' rust work required i decided to contact the seller of the ke20. Asking price was over $4,000.00 with spares included. I ended up paying 2k for the car on standard wheels, running the original 3k. 'fresh' panel and paint with all rust removed of course... uhhh young and dumb!! oh and no wof, reg, carpet, whole interior painted black, like everything rocking some jamex bucket seats. Drove it home and broke down on the wellington motorway, apparently they had fueled her up and the petrol gauge was stuffed so read nothing. Well actually it read nothing because they hadn't fueled her up. Dad got me some fuel and off we went. Next was the wof, went to vtnz and failed on a few things like front strut being welded, rust (huh wasn't it all removed?), high beam dash light not working, lowing blocks weren't aligned and neither were the headlights. Fixed all of this, because i didn't know anything about anything at the time i took it to a sparky i knew tofix the high beam light and align my headlights. $450.00 later i decided to do all the work myself on this. By the time i had this fixed the recheck date had lapsed, oh well. failed on high beam light again... fuck vtnz!! took it to local garage and put it through there. all good and allowed me to do some work experience to pay for it. So i was pretty broke at this point so just enjoyed driving it. Usual issues of not starting, over fueling, dizzy playing up etc etc. Over the next yearish i did small things like spray the dash parts black, buy a centre console, make carpet, spray the door cards grey, respray interior trim, match all the seat belts, buy hot wires, sell hotwires etc etc. Just small things that i thought were awesome but were just a waste of time. after that i bought a 5k and thankfully Aaron (club member) who sold it to me pretty much got it going in the car for me. real legend as i had no idea of what i was up to. that probably took 8 months to sort out. Joe (goat) sorted me out with some perfect fitment streets and the money i had from selling the hotwires bought me some tires... dumb size tires. Panels got stripped parts got painted and polished. Ke30 discs, calipers and backing plates were fitted. Bought other parts along the way which will come later on. then i thought it would be a good idea to put a silver top in there, it was i think but i lost the end caps for the block... uhggg so the new story starts here I have missed lots out but thats a medium run down on the poor girl. shes been neglected for the last couple of years and has really deteriorated. Some photos for interest, look ok here but a lot of rust repairs and panel and paint is required.
  3. Haha what a joke, ok sweet will definitely change it. Thanks for the info man.
  4. Haha no tapered welding, I have sorted the drive, machined up a sleeve with a keyway. The output shaft is tapered then steps up to a parallel shaft, i have chopped the tapered part off and will weld my sleeve onto the parallel section of the out put shaft. This means i now have a 1.00" shaft with a 0.25" key. Downside is if the seal leaks i'm probably screwed. I wouldn't think it would ever be a problem, might replace it before welding
  5. Yeah could do that or could just weld the drive to the shaft
  6. Ok so now thats its running ok i have to solve the problem of the tapered shaft. Maybe get a taper lock drive? or turn off the taper and mill a key way, Is it worth pulling apart to do this...? Behind the taper the parallel shaft is a decent length.
  7. Changed spark plug... Still no go, poured some more petrol into the spark plug hole and holly shit something happened. Stripped down the carb went to joes and cleaned out the stem that runs into the bowl, mhad a yarn and came up with a few ideas for the bike. Left the lovely broad meadows And reassembled carb. Pumped some fuel in her and bang bang she runs. Was getting a bit late to run an engine especially with no exhaust so will have another play tomorrow
  8. Ah ok i thoughts they were points. Haha yeah ive made sureof that, even poured a bit of fuel in there.
  9. Awesome cheers guys, yeah i started removing covers to remove flywheel and clean the points last night. Might as well! Adjusted coil to flywheel gap last night, made no difference. Ill get onto this stuff tonight and update
  10. So time for another project!! On the weekend i was thinking of a project that i could be a bit more creative and rat style with so thought i might dabble with a velo bike. Just so happens that on Monday i found an old Honda GX140 powered generator, 3.7kw 144cc. Been lying around for years and probably hasn't been started for several. Took the opportunity and made a deal. So i took it home gave it a clean up, removed the genie put some petrol in there and pulled the chord... wishful thinking that it would fire up. Bled the carb, checked the spark, topped up the oil and still no go. Im going to drain the oil and replace it, change the plug and try again. next ill clean the carb. Does anyone have any advice on what could be causing it not to fire or dealt with these engines before. Its turning over fine has a bit of resistance as you try to start it, just doesn't seem to be firing. Working on a style at the moment, have a few ideas but nothing set on paper yet. Want to get the motor going and get some wheels then go from there.
  11. I'll be going out to check it out. Did anyone want a lift?
  12. Showing interest in this. Can you drive a ute with no deck??
  13. Ah ok, basically the same technique, try adjusting your angle, a good weld will lap and fuse both metals being joined with no gaps or high spots. watch this guy he has great welding videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq2LgmThpP8
  14. I agree, looks like a lack of fusion. We would hate to see that shell hit thenter ground especially if someone was under it. Practice with adjusting your settings ie hotter, colder, faster wire speed, slower wire speed etc. Also your technique, faster, slower, pausing at the start of the weld to get your molten pool going. Also I tend to look at both edges of the weld and maintain my bead to consistently lap the edges of the steel.
  15. Any advice on painting, has dried and a bit of orange peel is still present.
  16. Today thanks to help got a little done. Firstly i took the deck off so i don't have to worry about it when i get the wellside So that ended up being easy as F!@#!!! Then looked at the chassis and thought that needs to be cleaned up so a mate headed over and gave me a hand doing that. Got a little done but the wire wheel ran out... While doing that we also prepped and painted some front guards These were acid dipped then neutralised a few weeks ago only got this photo before painting. Sanded back and thanks to acid dipping it didn't require much effort First time really using a proper gun, turned out ok but the last coat went a bit sour.. orange peel looking.
  17. Haha yes well that was the plan but i am now driving up to Auckland for work so thought "F!@#, i can do this and get paid for it... Its a new plan" so yeah. All sorted now, cheers kicker
