Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted October 11, 2024 So ive had this for while now... (about 5 years) Been sat out side mine now (under cover ) for a year or so. And be for that it was a mates bedroom inside his shed.... basically been dry stored since 2011 when the last LD28 died and he gave up on it. I got given this by him as a way of saying thanks for me painting his Valiant hearse .... twice (long fucking story). I didn't ask for anything in return.. but he knew I loved the thing and one day messaged me to say he had put it on my name .... I honestly never thought I'd get it but ..he asked me if I was home one night a year or so ago and dropped it off.. It is reg on hold , original black plates and certified for an ld28 auto. (Had no motor or box ). But all ready converted to a camper on the 80s with gold porn style shag pile carpet. This is how it had been for 12 + years 18 4 Quote

Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 11, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 11, 2024 The 1st thing we did last year was strip the full camper stuff out as my wife was not stepping foot in it till it was. (She know the.mate who gave it to us..... and was not going in there. I gave away as much as I could and we still dumped over 300kgs of shag pile and shit).. Then its pretty much sat like this till last week. 19 2 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 11, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 11, 2024 The previous owner claimed the ld28 motor is a shit house and he had blown a bunch of them and I'm wasting my time to put one back in. But I know how he drives and I would imagine that combined with the weight , diff ratio and lack of power with contribute to him breaking a few. I did think about loads of different motors I could put but uts hot a cert for an ld28 ...so it was getting another. I had agreed to put Karl's mk4 together for him and asked him to find me a ld28 and auto box... he going me one that was in a car and had run ... so qas able to pull it all out myself and see whats what. (Never played/touched with an ld28 let alone ). He dropped off this weeeeeeee gem 20 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 11, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 11, 2024 The motor must have sat for a while as it had plenty of rust in the coolant system and one of the front plugs had rusted out completely.. So I decided to strip things off so j could get to all the plugs.. knock them out and water blast the fuck out of the insides. And after an hour or so I managed to get all the shit out 22 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 12, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 12, 2024 With some advice from a mate and against my better judgment as I've never played with an ld28 ...I stripped the head off to check surfaces and look for cracks Even the head gasket looked in great shape . So I ordered a full gasket set , frost plugs ,oil filter , thermostat and watetpump.. Wet stoned the face of the block and head ...and then out it all back together...even managed to get all the timing marks in place and bottoned down... turns over with no interference.....huge win for ...qas shitting myself ...bit of black paint ..and she's going back together And Thats this thing upto date.. cheers 34 Quote
d.p.n.s Posted October 19, 2024 Author Posted October 19, 2024 Got a few things done today. Sump on Oil pump ...on Injection pump on and timed...never done anything like this before. But read the manual a bunch of times to get my head around it ..and got.and hopefully spot on Clean up all the glow plugs and put them back in. 9 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 19, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 19, 2024 Was advised by a mate to have the injectors cleaned but fuck me that not cheap... $500+ to have my cleaned $690 for a serviced set But mine were bloody dirty But as with most thing.. I decided to pull 1 apart and see if I can do it myself. I found a nozzle in side with a part number.... few Google search later I had a set on the way from the states for less than $80. Once landed i stripped the injectors, cleaned them and rebuilt them with new nozzles Put them back on with new washers. *new waterpump on *oil filter housing on with new filter *inlet on ,*exhaust on. Starting to look like a motor again. And so far .the Bedford, motor, auto ,everything all up..owes me less than $550 and shitnloads of my hours but thats pretty sweet 24 1 Quote
d.p.n.s Posted October 19, 2024 Author Posted October 19, 2024 It sucks and I should have looked closer. But thanks @cletus for making me have another look . Now I need another block and another gasket set.......better now I suppose 3 1 11 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 20, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 20, 2024 Huge thanks to Harry and karl for enabling me with a LD28 to go with my other one... ( this is how the pinto issue started. ) So fingers crossed #2 ld28 will do the job..... dog thinks so. 20 1 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 25, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 25, 2024 Well thats the cracked block stripped And #2 motor on the stand...will strip it later today. 10 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 26, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 26, 2024 Dirty shitty fucking black mess .. thats how I would describe this motor. But original And well worn... the chain tensioner was almost all the way out and the chain just slipped off Motor is full of rust but no way ner as bad as the last bloody and the frost plugs hadn't rusted through....thats a good thing But shitty fucking black mess every where.. Will give it a good clean tomorrow maybe and check for cracks. 12 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted October 27, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted October 27, 2024 So the #2 motor is STD bore STD rings and bearings . The 1st motor is over sized pistons and .25 on the bearings. The bore in the 2nd motor seems perfectly fine and will be good with a hone. But this means I aming to have go use the dirty shitty black fucking pistons and rods so i stripped them all down, checked them all and gave them a clean and the main caps I'm going to use the crank from the 1st motor as it looks like its had a recent grind and is good condition. The block from the 2nd also seems in good condition and cleaned up well....no cracks found just yet !! A quick paint with some black and ill sort the surfaces out at a later date.. So just need some STD rings and .25 main and rod caps and ill be able to rebuild the block. As for heads the head from the 1st motor is in great condition and even the stem seals look new ..so ill not strip it ...I'll just bolt it on as is. Cheers 27 Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted November 2, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted November 2, 2024 Piston rings ,main and big end bearings where sitting on my door step ready for me when I got home yesterday...(love that). So today . I *surfaced the block face. *honed the block (some marks around the top of the bores ..but not a lip..so not worried) *cleaned the block for rebuild *slapped the frost plugs in *slapped the crank out of the 1st motor in *put the rods and pistons back together *pit the rings on the pistons *slapped the pistons in the holes and all bolted down. *slapped the head on..bolted that down And got it all timed up. 20 Quote
d.p.n.s Posted November 2, 2024 Author Posted November 2, 2024 What is this for and I do I need it. Wasn't hooked up when u pulled the motor out Quote
Popular Post d.p.n.s Posted November 10, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted November 10, 2024 Got some work done on the LD28. *engine all timed *oil pick up on *sump on *injection pump on *injection pump fully timing motor *cam cover on *Water pump on *injectors in *glow plugs in *Front cover on *water pump and crank pulleys on *exhaust manifold on *EGT sensor tapped and mounted in exhaust manifold *inlet manifold on. *and started messing with turbo setup. I wasn't going to a LD turbo manifold and the factory none turbo manifold is divided pulse and seeing as i was going to use EVO turbo of the mk3 (thats getting an upgrade). That is also divided pulse so I ordered abflange and a couple of 90°steam pipe bends and made a little J pipe.. (think i can cut about 25mm off it and move it closer to the manifold. 17 Quote

d.p.n.s Posted December 7, 2024 Author Posted December 7, 2024 Got a few things done on the old LD28. *thermostat housing on .. drilled out And tapped for *temp gauge and them sensor to turn on and off Fan Oil gallery T in (small one) so I could get the new oil pressure sensor in and turbo oil feed git the oil filter and housing on with new water lines and clamps Starting to come together.... now I took a bunch of photos of things when i.pelled the motor out of the rover and lost of them.. soooooo.... let play *WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS *OR WHERE THE FUCK DOES THIS GO 1.i take it this is the main fuel in 2.
