Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted May 26, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted May 26, 2023 Escort is starting to look a bit brighter now that some colour has been applied. Interior has been painted and looks really good compared to the old oxidised paint. Colour is Olympic Blue. Painter thinks he will do the black accents around window frames, dash and front grill area. Old paint job had the sills and front valance painted black as well. Undecided if I will paint these black but if anyone has any ideas about this, leave a comment on Project discussion page. Have also been replacing the clutch release bearing and notice the anti rattle bush on release arm pivot post is missing. If anyone has a fix for this, leave message on discussion page where there is a picture. Thanks. Cheers till next time when I hope car is all painted Project Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/ 26 1 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted June 4, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted June 4, 2023 Getting closer to coming home. Took out front running gear, sand blasted cross member, tension bar and brackets. Cleaned up other parts ready for painting. Reassemble with new rack bushes and boots. Also replaced track control arms. Now one last trip into spray booth to paint heater bubble and top vent area. Painter said he has left this area to last as it is really hard to get all the dust out. Car is looking very bright and love it. Pleased I decided to keep it the original colour. Should be coming home next week so decided I needed to close in open shed for a bit of protection from the elements. Can't wait Project Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/ 22 Quote

New home is ready, just hope it is starling proof. Have made a start on refurbishing wiring loom. Had large sheets printed of wiring diagrams out of Hayne Manual so my poor eyes could read them. Starting on spotlight harness but have a few question needing an anwser. Can't find this diagram in Haynes book. If anyone has knowlegde I have a few questions on Project Discussion page. Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted June 29, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted June 29, 2023 Time has come to start puting back together. Started with a few small things like fit the bonnet bump stops and bonnet stay. To easy. Lock assenbly was already fitted so next was internal door pull. Once I had figured out how to pull apart, fitting the linkage was easy. One side worked perfectly but the other side came up short. Ended up shorting rod linkage by making kink greater with pliers. Petes mk2 Posted July 3, 2023 Author Posted July 3, 2023 Decided to refurbish door mirrors so masked up glass fronts and sand blasted. With a bit of sanding they where ready for primer, followed with two coats of satin black enamel. Looked pretty good until Itook masking tape off front and looked more closely at mirror fronts. Quite a bit of possible water damage to back of glass as seen in photos. Result being very poor image. Not sure whether this will affect getting wof or if the mirror glass can be relpaced. Would I be better off getting new replacement ones. If anyone has any suggestions, could they leave comments on Disscusion page, Cheers Project Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/#comment-2573328 4 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted July 6, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted July 6, 2023 Now onto the external door handles. One of the linkages had a broken bush that needed to be replaced. Hunted around until I found a hard irrigation riser that was the perfect size to make a new bush. Cut off a small piece, heated it up so I could get around 90 deg angle on linkage arm. With a bit of shapeing, it looked like a new one. Sand blasted, primed and painted. Fitted and working well. Petes mk2 Posted July 12, 2023 Author Posted July 12, 2023 After fitting door handles I fitted window track extensions. Next, cleaned up 1/4 window rubber seals and class which had some old paint on them. Once in place I was able to fit bailey channel. Also sprayed in some cavity protection in the bottom of doors where it had rusted before. Next will clean window and fit along with regulator. Not sure if I need to add any grease to regulator or what type. Any suggestion can be put on Discussion Page. Petes mk2 Posted July 19, 2023 Author Posted July 19, 2023 Well that was harder than expected. Getting the glass into the door required getting the metal divider channel at the right angle and the glass in bailey channel on both sides. Could of done with another pair of hands but all done now. Put in window regulator and fitted weather strips. Works well. Also started to repair parcel tray which has seen better days. A few holes and one of the little tabs has broken off. Taped back of hole and filled hole with filler. Will sand off so I have a good surface to glue vinyl too. Also made a metal suport for tab as coudn't think of any other way of attaching it. Petes mk2 Posted July 22, 2023 Author Posted July 22, 2023 Behind the back seat is a card partition which divides boot area from interior of car. Mine is a bit of a mess so will replace it. Traced a pattern onto some 3mm thinline and cut out. Punched attackment holes and primed. Finished off in black. Just need to find some foam and it will look just like new. 9 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted July 22, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted July 22, 2023 For a change thought I would sort out my fix for left hand side engine mount. The old one had started to come apart. The hole is quite large so resized a washer and place in hole as a reducer. Will tack in later. The new engine mount rubber is slightly thicker than old one (3mm} and not sure wether this will have any effect when motor is back in. If anyone has experience with using these mounts could you let me know if I'm on the right track. Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted August 22, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted August 22, 2023 Have been a bit slack in updating progress on build, so hear goes. Decided to replace headlining that had some damage after rust repairs. Gathered everything I needed and after watching a number of video's made a start. Was a lot harder than I anticipated but finally was happy with result. Now just have to find courage to cut hole for interior light and locate mounting points for visors and mirror. Also refurbished brake callipers. Sand blasted, dismantled, painted and fitted new seal kits, Ready to be installed Project Discusion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/page/2/#comment-2579154 18 Quote

Brake calipers fitted along with brake booster and brake lines. Next put in petrol tank making sure to get tank breather and fuel return line in right holes. Just a couple of grommets to find. Also replaced steering column coupler and rubber grommet in firewall. Project Discusion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/page/2/#comment-2579154 16 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted September 2, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted September 2, 2023 Got a few more jobs finished this week. Had the old rostyle rims sand blasted, then epoxy primed, then painted outside facing surface black. Next had to mask up areas I wanted to remain black. Made a wooden template and then used this to cut out masking tape which I had stuck to some baking paper. Worked really well and just had to peel off backing and place on rims. Now respayed rims a metalic silver and once masking tape removed they look really good. Small amount of bleeding whiich shouldn't be to hard to fix. Also found someone to replace mirror glass in wing mirrors. Did a really good job so am pleased to be able to use original mirrors. Have been putting loom back in and have a few spare wires. If anyone is able to help, have put up picture on Project Discussion page. Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted September 19, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted September 19, 2023 Just a quick update. Cleaned up all the glass and installed most. After cleaning off 15yrs of grime I noticed a whole lot of small air bubbles in front screen. Decided that this would drive me crazy seeing then all the time and thought it might affect wof so are going to replace with a new one. Rest of glass looks really good. Next was the hardest part I've had to put back. It was the mount for water washer bottle which has a nut high up in strut tower. No room, fingers not long enough, new it would be hard to do when I took it off. Also fitted spotlight mounts and now only have to sort out relay and wiring Poject Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/page/2/#comment-2589465 17 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted October 12, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted October 12, 2023 Two steps forward, one step back, Finally got new front screen fitted and looks really good. Next was a big step. Bolted gearbox to motor put into car. Ony took two of us an hour. Was quite a steep angle but pleased to say no damage to paint work. Now lots of bits to bolt on. Now for the step back. Two piece driveshaft needed a universal joint replaced so took apart, measured up and tried to find one. No luck. Apparently they are a special size and not made any more. Looks like I'm going to need one piece driveshaft made. Bugger Poject Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/page/2/#comment-2589465 12 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted January 5, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted January 5, 2024 Have been a bit slack. Not with working on car but updateing build. So here goes. Spent some time on rebilding carb. Dismantled and then cleaned main body with muriatic acid. Very impressed with how it worked. Had to replace two jets as someone had been trying to reduce hole size with solder. All back together and on car. Ran new fuel lines and connected. Ftted new vacum lines to brake booster and distributor and also fitted old heater hoses. Might have to find some new ones as looking a bit old and out of place. Choke cable on and accelerator cable in place. Engine bay starting to fill up. 10 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted January 7, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted January 7, 2024 Next to be put in is the starter motor and alternator which is pretty easy. Most of the loom is in place so hook up everything I can. Next build a loom for spotlights out of parts I have. Run a fused power feed from battery and earth to chasis. Pretty sure I can activate spotlights to only come on when high beam is on by taking a wire off high beam fuse in engine bay which only has power on high beam. All set to see what has power at this stage. After dinner and grandchildren are in bed we go out and hook up battery. Turn key and nothing, no lights at all. After a night thinking about it and looking at all the picture I had taken, realise I have one wire on wrong terminal. Hey presto we have lights working, fan blowing, indicators flashing. Just hope the next click of the key bring similar results Project Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/84912-petes-mk2-escort-1600-sports/page/2/#comment-2595759 12 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted January 21, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted January 21, 2024 Made a start on the interior of car by refurbishing back seat trim. Removed ash tray and lightly sanded panel. Next sprayed with plastic primer filler then lightly sanded again. Finished with vinyl dye which came up really well. Did the same process for clips. Fitted ash trays after spending some time getting them to work properly. Now to install parcel tray and boot divider panel and also vinyl wheel arch trim. Fitted new c-pillar trim after marking seat belt mounting points incase I put seat belts in the rear. Finally put in rear seat back. Looking smart 12 Quote
Popular Post Petes mk2 Posted January 22, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted January 22, 2024 Now for the visors, mirror and interior light. Had located all mounting positions when i put up head linning and also checked interior light worked. Only problem I had was one of the visors wouldn't stay up. Someone suggested that I use some heatskrink on the pins. This works well but you have to be carefull not to split female part in visor. Put new cover on mirror mount and all looks very tidy. Next onto the floor which has been covered in sound deading and then underfelt, making sure to locate all seat mounting points. Not sure if i should attach this somehow to stop it moving under carpet. Also got ready to attach door cards by first fitting plastic liner as miosture barrier.
