Popular Post Nominal
Pushed the B-pillar up some on one side then welded in a brace. Need to do the other side now Top tip, don't use the rubber pusher end on the ram against a sharp edge. Also unbolted the rear seat back without too much trouble. Had to dismantle it quite a bit to remove the main support bracket so it can go into the molasses tank.
Popular Post Nominal
Got sidetracked into Holden and Morris brake work-overs for a few weeks. Took out the remainder of the back seat support structure which has been soaking in the molasses for a few weeks now. Made two new pieces for the bottom of the B-pillar, one for each side. Surprising how much softer the non-zintec steel is, even though they are both 18g. I'm out of the zintec right now but have most of a sheet of normal CR sheet to work with.
Popular Post Nominal
Made some holes in the reinforcing plates. These punches do a nice job. And did some more cutting. First to go is this bit of the floor and the remainder of the inner sill. Body mount bolt put up a bit of a fight but some heat and the impact gun got it off OK.
Popular Post Nominal
Bent up some new body to chassis mounts, one for each side. Â I had new panels for these floor pieces in my USA order. At the time I wasn't sure how much remained to reproduce them from. They wouldn't have been too hard to made.
Popular Post Nominal
The original woodie sills have a special shape (AFAIK the cars aren't the same). This is a pic of a good one from an ebay auction. I want to reproduce this if possible for repair certification reasons mostly. The blue woodie has a plain vertical piece there I think (can't check as it is still in lockdown at the painters for a roof touch up). At least it's easy to see what is required when the whole sill comes off the car.... First attempt is to make a press tool and form from a chunk of wood: Top plate from some 3mm steel: Give it a squish: Not great, I have the z-fold a bit wrong in this test piece. Currently refining the lower form and will have another go.
Popular Post Nominal
Round two Cleaned up the old sill a bit more so I could check what I was doing. Cur the step into the lower form and clamped that down too  Worked out better. I'll extend the press tool a bit more and hopefully get less of a crease for round 3.  Also got the other one back from the painters after a month in paint shop / covid jail. The damage to the roof from the roof rack has been fixed up nicely.
Popular Post Nominal
Finally got back to this. Revised the tooling a bit and tried a longer test piece. Came out usably OK I think. Quick squirt of zinc it just to remove the reflections. I haven't filled the holes in this test one, but they'll need to be done for the proper pieces.
Popular Post Nominal
Have been a bit distracted with other things, but winter is coming. Pretty much all my front panels are junk. Including this across the front - slam panel? I have a better one in the parts collection. It's been soaking in the molasses barrel with other bits for maybe 3 months, so pulled some out for cleanup. Some window trim, rear seat supports and taillight assemblies.  I cleaned the smaller bits up, wire brushes on drills, sandpaper, pit of phosphoric acid. The slam panel sat around for a day so got some nice surface colouring. A benefit of the molasses is that it smells nice. The ends are a bit yuck because the barrel isn't quite deep enough to get the whole part into it. And after a 30-40 min cleanup it's ready for some epoxy to keep it good. I haven't decided on opening up the latch, it's riveted together so would be a bit of a mission.
Popular Post Nominal
Have been fixing the necessary cleaned up pieces before priming. This is the side support for the back seat, one footing was quite rusty so stuck on a new one.  This piece supports the seat back when it's folded down, attaches to the inner guard. Folded up a new extension piece And made a new top as it was pretty pitted. This part is visible inside the car I think.  Trimmed and glued on. Still practicing my tig welding.  Also a new foot piece on this.  And spot-welded back together. Had to put some different arms on the welder to get clearance. Much easier than plug welding with the mig though.  And cleaned up the remaining pieces for some durepox tomorrow.
Popular Post Nominal
Sprayed some durepox on the cleaned up bits   Pulled a window winder out of the molasses tank and cleaned it up. Might take it up to the electroplaters and see how it goes as an assembly.  Started picking away at the rust again tonight.  Also fixed the headlights on the other one. High beam light was always on, and lights were dim too. WOF man said last time to sort it out so finally had a look. Don't really drive at night anyway. Turned out that the PO has some Hella H4 lights fitted but whoever did the job (I don't think it was him) didn't know that you need to swamp the ground and low beam wires in the plug for the new lights. So basically there was mess where both filaments were always on in various combinations. Works mint now though (even the high beam light) and new WOF acquired.
Popular Post Nominal
Another month already? Hot Rod club came for a visit so pulled some wood out to make it look like I've been making progress  After getting some more steel I made a start on the bottom of the B-pillar
Popular Post Nominal
Took the working one away to Ohakune. Went well even after the frost so took a spin up to Whakapapa.  Annoyingly left the petrol cap at National Park g.a.s and it wasn't there when I went back 90 minutes later so who knows what happened to it. Managed to find a substitute at Horopito Motors after sneaking entry on a Sunday when they were sort-of closed.
Popular Post Nominal
The continuing process of remaking the bottom of the B-pillar. Â I've been doing it in smaller pieces to keep the shape references. This area is almost all hidden when the wood and sills go on anyway. 38
