Popular Post vk327
Had a few hours free after a customer wiring job so smashed out the 3" stainless exhaust, no Instagram welds here but tidy enough best part it doesn't hit anywhere... Also how good does the paint look in the evening light
vk327
Well after so much progress on this thing and booking it for dyno tune tomorrow, it gives me a swift kick in the nuts... had it running Saturday everything fine bled coolant all good... took it for a drive last night all seeming well pulled back into the shed and a weird rattling noise getting louder and oil pressure at idle dropped to 12psi, chasing it around with the screwdriver on the earmuff stethoscope. jacked it up and hello Rodney knocking sound from the sump. Shut it off and drained the sparkly oil out all 6.5 litres, weird I only put 4.2 in there so I think an injector is stuffed and may have hydrauliced a cylinder. Mates coming round tomorrow to give me motorvation to pull the engine out and contemplate it's future. 1
vk327
Well torn it all apart, alot of wear for a motor with 5000k on it glazed bores, ring gaps are all over the place some are +52 thou others around 30, bearings have all had shit go thru them no6 bore is trashed massive fuel contamination in the oil gonna be a new block needed now I think the noise was coming from crank slapping overfill sump from the fuel in the oil 1
Popular Post vk327
Came so close to dropping my turbo barra in this... but just picked up this somewhat ugly looking 3.3 should work for what I need only 120k on it, stripped it down, small mark in no5 but hopefully my 030 over pistons can clean up and bore to suit with new rings, crank looks good so should get away with a polish balance and re assemble On a side note can see why the factory piston used to break the skirts off
Popular Post vk327
Replacement block heading off to Marsh motorsport this week for machining and rotating assembly balancing, gone to a new clutch with a sprung plate to make it nicer on the street. Got distracted on a side quest, vk calais digital dash popped up on market place. Not cheap but so much 80s cool. Gonna set it up all running off ecu outputs maybe a canbus io module, so it will be fully functional including fuel used & distance to empty and can calibrate it so it reads right
Popular Post vk327
Real impressed at Marsh motorsports turn around at this time of year, only a week to have it all ready to go, bored, honed, decked, crank crack tested & polished, ring gaps and bearing clearances set and the rotating assembly all balanced Got the bottom end all assembled need to find my cam card to dial that back in. And cause I'm not busy enough already have decided to go full sequential and drive by wire throttle with a link xtreme so now onto new wiring loom build and setting up a custom cam sensor for sequential sync signal 18
Popular Post vk327
Been busy getting everything back together, got it all running again on the monsoon and run the cam in with new lifters after finding a cracked lifter face. Alot of work into building a custom cam pickup for sequential triggering built the new wiring loom for the xtreme and fitted it all up last week, made up mount for the LS coils, adaptor for the e-throttle and mount for the pedal. Off for dyno run in time and tune tomorrow

Popular Post vk327
Good day on the dyno engine run in went well few teething issues with the e throttle PID control making 190rwkw just under 9psi of boost, running a bit of water meth up top rapidly dropped the intake temps from 35degrees down to 24. Will dial in some more boost later once clutch has bedded in properly. Time to get a wof tomorrow and enjoy it.

Popular Post vk327
May have got a bit carried away with a brake upgrade to do a few track play days... evo8 brembos for the front on 320x32 vz thunder rotors, and z32 twin pots for the rear on 280mm vented vn group a rotors, all brand new bits makes a nice change to having to rebuild old manky brakes Should be pretty easy job to machine up adaptors to suit
Popular Post vk327
and down the rabbit hole of 3d printing i go... , brought an ender3 v3 se to have a play with got the adaptors version 1 ready to print when it arrives fronts for the evo brembos Rears to suit the z32 calipers & cutting the backing plate to fit
Popular Post vk327
New printer works pretty good, printed dimensions are spot on, now waiting on bolts to test fit and check what i measured is correct, probably not... but hey that's why it's 3d printed 18
Popular Post vk327
1st big outing since being put back together, 800km round trip to fielding and back via horopito for palmy swapmeet, cruising along averaging 12.4L/100km is better than when it was NA (although was boschs finest jetronic 80s fuel injection then) , love the torque curve this thing has now just rolling up on boost in 5th pulling up the big hills around taihape. such a mint day to cruise home on saturday 40
Popular Post vk327
Well since the vette wheels ain't gonna clear the brakes, iv committed to go the hard way to some cool wheels, ex 7 series bmw, 2 piece 18x8 18x9.5 style 42s made by bbs, fronts are spot on flush to the guards at +20p, rears are gonna need diff given the chop chop about 25mm each side, should look pretty sweet in gunmetal or dark silver centers & high polished lips something like the pic with the bbs centers & show off the fancy brakes at the same time
Popular Post vk327
Had a look at fitment on the rear looks like diff needs about a 25mm trim each side with a 245/40 tyre, plenty of room to the inside tub & suspension arms. fronts are pretty much flush to the front guard, will need to go up about 10mm in suspension height... oh damn now i need coilovers sorry not sorry wifey. Got the RS740s stripped apart that was a fun job getting loctited titanium bolts out of old alloy barrels. Being a 2 piece the barrels are blind hole threaded not nut and bolted like most 3 piece rims, great care & quite a bit of heat the barrel required to get them out without galling threads. Next up get the centers and barrels off to alistrip to be cleaned back to bare alloy for painting & polishing. I have drawn up & 3d printed an adapter to run 70mm BBS centers, that fits mint so off to CNC to be made in alloy & polished up to match the barrels, I'm off to pickup my bumper from being repaired (on the way to palmy swapmeet logging truck threw up a rock right thru the front lip, damn fibreglass bumper life), will have a look at some colours for centers while at my painters.
Popular Post vk327
further down the money pit worrmhole... got the wheels stripped of the old crusty paint by alistrip, then off to ACP and had them trued up, lips repaired & machined , now to sort out paint & final high polish for the lips. looking so good even at this point in bare metal
Popular Post vk327 Posted Wednesday at 18:26 Author Popular Post Share Posted Wednesday at 18:26 progress on the brake adaptors, a few chunks of 4140 now match my 3d printed models and fit spot on thanks to Moose design for sorting the machining, there's even hope to keep the corvette wheels it's super tight but they do clear in the 16"wheels
