flyingbrick
@64valiant was selling a beetle and somehow i convinced the wife that we needed a joint project. @64valiant is chief adviser to ensure nothing too shit is done to it. Because he's a VW expert and truly entrenched in the VW scene and I'm a closet bogan this probably wont end well (EG, while i think this car is perfection, he's busy swallowing his own vomit.) (not mine, but i wish it was) Pretty keen to get this going ASAP, budget is essentially $500 a month until its going I'll put up some pics of our piece when i get home but happy to hear every bodies thoughts/advice/do you have a floor pan with live rego sitting around? 8
flyingbrick
So this is the current state of things. No engine, no wheels, previous owner filled any dent or issue with too much bog. 7
flyingbrick
I stripped down the front end, gave it a good clean and gave the arms to the vdub shoppe so that they could tackle the ball joints using a press rather than a hammer. Next- there's a pair of front beam adjusters to weld in there. Oh and here are some great looking bugs for inspiration.
flyingbrick
This is consuming far too much of my thinking time.. theres so much to learn and so many cars out there that most things seem to be done to death and easy to find information on. I was hoping to be spending less time cleaning and more time doing actual cool stuff but have more time than $$ so meh. Painted suspensions and new balljoints. Ps. I wasnt trying to paint the disc surface.
Popular Post flyingbrick
My wife and i did some bonding over the beetle and got probably 1/3rd of it sanded down and smooth. Few issues with the existing body filler being applied to a completely unprepared surfaces but nothing major. A few more hours and we will be ready for primer And this week I skived off work so that I could hang out with @64valiant, work on his bug and do some on mine. I managed to get my beam adjusters welded in. First there was marking. then there was careful cutting (and some brace welding.. this photo is a bit out of sequence) Tacking and V grinding and welding...and more V grinding and then in the time it takes to make 2x floor mats it was done.
flyingbrick
next up was the rod ends and steering box. I bought this lot (which includes wheel bearings and seals) and stripped down/wire wheeled this and I took no more photos except these.... the steering box is currently sitting in degreaser and needs multiple new seals, bearings and bushes.

flyingbrick
Had a few minutes so visited the lockup and wifey helped me pull the seats out. The seat mounting brackets that are welded to the seat bases are weird. They look kinda factory but also super unprofessional-10mm thick flat bar, with extremely tight bolt/frame clearance. Does anyone know if this seat fabric is factory? And check out the before and after cleaning pics. They got a soapy scrub (brown water, yuck) and then an actual waterblast.. the vinyl has a very deep texture which was FULL of human filth.
Popular Post flyingbrick
Did front wheel bearings, bought new front beam bearings, some other random stuff, new front calipers, greg has some new front brake hoses for me and so once i get some wheels and a new front spring pack (some of my leafs were broken) i can get it on the ground and rolling. A few things before its drive time but lists getting shorter Wheels, steering box, rear side windows, window seals, motor off @64valiant and be sweet for a drive i think i also bought a turbo legacy as a donor for a one-day engine swap dream project. Thw legacy was being sold by a mate for $750 with blown trans and 140,000km, seemed like a bargain and couldn't help it.

Popular Post flyingbrick
Haters gonna hate.. but i LOVE the 80s/90s drag look. Test fit (was hard as suspension arms werent retained by anything) to see if i need a narrowed beam. I do.
Popular Post flyingbrick
Iv done nothing to this but buy stuff- probably won't work on it again until the sheds done, but we have a pretty good kit of parts ready for assembly, Narrowed front beam, full window rubber kit, door rubber kit, chrome trim, front air assisted shocks, narrowed front beam, new front torsion springs, caster shims, rear side windows, steering dampener, side running board things, plus the joints etc mentioned previously. Parts prices for these things are definitely a huge bonus, very reasonable compared to anything else I have been part of before. Will be EPIC once assembly can properly begin, is going to be like a big model set
Popular Post flyingbrick
So the shed is mostly done, although available capacity for projects is at less than 75% as we are living in the end of it. The beetle needs to come home this week as we are losing the storage unit so it is time to get it rolling. Not a terribly difficult task by any means and took a few hours to trim down the torsion rod spring things, drill new dimples and get it all greased and assembled with new seals etc. It was definitely nice using the new shed for car stuff, and nice being able to just reach into a box and pull out clean/new bits for assembly. Terrible pointless update, here's a boring photo or two.

flyingbrick
Just bought new heavy duty heater channels which were on special coz of light surface rust. Can't wait for house to finish so we can move out of this fuckin shed and I can make some dust.
