Matteybean
Holy Shikhimova time flies. 2019 turned out to be a very hectic year. Partner got pregnant, we got engaged, and decided to smash out the rest of our house renovations before our girl was born. Anyway with riley born and renovations finished it's time to get back into this and boy have I been chomping at the bit to finish it. Turned out the diff setup was as hori as the front engine mounts and me being a clever cunt I didnt check it before going to chch to strip the parts car so I needed a new one. So what did I do? I went and brought another diff off harry.. from chch. Decided I might aswell upgrade so got the whole disc rear end of an ms112 crown and the GC even threw in a 4.1 ratio diff which is the factory spec ms65 3 speed auto Needs a complete overhaul and paint. Got the rest of the panels painted Now that I've got the rear end I'll swap it over. Hook up the driveshaft and fill trans with fluid and hopefully fire it up in the rear future. Also brought a square headlight JDM front Nos Ms90 kioto headlights. Ms90 surrounds and a ms75 pre facelift grill Exciting times ahead.
Matteybean
Got stuck into the diff over the weekend. Rotors and calipers sent away for skim/rebuild Changed the diff head out to the 4.1 which is the factory for a ms65 3 speed auto and gave it a clean up and paint Cheers
Matteybean
Swapped the diffs over. Old one I'm led to believe is off a 308.. Australian by the look of it. Old New ms112 rear Also got all the skimmed rotors, rebuilt calipers, flexible brake hoses and brake pads. Got some diff oil aswell Only thing that had to be swapped over was the hand brake cables, everything else bolted up. I've bled the brakes and adjusted the hand brake and all feels good. Fitted driveshaft, filled diff and transmission with oil and started trying to tackle the wiring.. doesn't start off key so will need to do some digging and try see. Getting close now.
Popular Post Matteybean
Been a productive week or so Installed electric ignition Also got some power steering hoses made up Hooked up my spare corona radiator which turns out is fucked anyway and started spraying water as it pressurized. Once the motor was going the power steering felt good. When I first tried starting the motor I wasnt getting any fuel to carb turns out someone cut the rocker arm off in the mechanical fuel pump for whatever reason and couldnt be arsed making a flange hah. Anyway had to install a low pressure fuel pump. I mounted it under the boot where the fuel lines exited fuel tank and used a chassis mount to mount 1 side thru boot and other side bolts thru chassis I ran an in line fuse which is in accessible thru boot. Covered the parcel tray in some 1960s grandma NZ spec carpet to hide all the holes. Will do for now Managed to drive it in and out of garage. Power steering feels good. Brakes all feel good. I'm missing the throttle linkage on firewall but have sourced one just waiting for it to arrive but just idled in and out. All lights working as they should. I finished putting together dash. Def need to give it a clean.. Once autobend open up I'll order all the bits for the exhaust otherwise waiting on a pallet from chch for remaining of missing bits and can try for a wof
Matteybean
Put the rest of the front end on. Headlights arent working seems no power to the relay from switch side because when I press down on this the lights work. Fuses are all ok. This has been spliced into loom. Going to have to remove cluster ect again to trace behind dash.. So decided to take a break.
Matteybean
Ok so still havent got that relay to work so will make up a new one/buy one. Took the crown for a hoon down the road. Went ok... ish. The steering isnt quite centered and turning right sucked. Need to re center. And apart from the no exhaust and motor running like pooes it was a success. Still need an exhaust if anyone knows someone keen I'm in pukekohe. Wanting mild steel. Will use factory 4m cast extractors. Also cleaned up and painted the grill and surrounds flat black. Also connected up the throttle linkages so accelerator works off pedal. Getting close.

Matteybean
shit time flies. some people say i need better work life balance but i say life is riding a bike to keep your balance you have to keep moving, anyway shit yarn ive been busy. not too much has happened with this but it is closer. took for a hoon down the road which didnt end well because no exhaust = fumes from combustion circling back around into the carb at idle/low speeds. managed to sus an exhaust of a ms65 crown but had the earlier 4m motor so just had to change flange and im away. the rest of the exhaust also got painted black but no photo.. all fitted but leaked at manifold i had wrong gasket still will get some rtv tomorrow and try again also the radiator i had got started to leak once up to temp so i soldered it up and it appears to have fixed the leak. i also purchased a new wiring harness with relays i just need to wire back to under the dash, brought the washer kit from supercheap auto so shes a squirter boys plan on giving it another go once home from work today another road test is on the cards. i need to get this one finished so i can get the corona driveable i havent touched it since i snapped an axle at oldschool drag day 2018 i think
Matteybean
Ill eventually get around to having a play around with this grill and facelift headlights Looking for another pre facelift crown badge and toyota if anyone has them
Popular Post Matteybean
So today I started it up again with no exhaust leaks so that's a success! No leaks from sump anymore so that's a win too! Hooned up and down the road beautifully Unfortunately I only seem to be getting 12.6 volts everywhere with the car running so have got another alternator I'll swap out. Battery is on trickle charge ill try again tomorrow during daylight
Matteybean
Had a productive weekend Got the headlights working with dip switch got horn up and running and removed the ridiculous speaker boxes on the doors . There was some left over vinyl so i hole sawed and patched over Not perfect but 100x better than previously Treated myself to some hydraulic wheel dollies so handy for small garages Cars running like a bag of dicks not sure why..
Matteybean
Cars still running like complete shit Did a compression test came up alright. Plugs 2 and 4 were abit oily but maybe from rocker cover that use to leak I've since replaced gasket and I think when I checked plugs last time might of dripped in.. Anyway I'll start from the top and go over it all including checking the electric side.. 12.9 volts could be the issue.. Anyway I will persevere..
Matteybean
Cars still running like crap.. ive set the carburetor to factory 4m specs but the carbs for a 5m. Idle and revs allgood but under load it really struggles and smokes like fuck. Managed to get couple drives up and down the road.. sump appears to still be leaking which is a real pain because the huge fuck off cross members in these crowns give no clearance to access all the bolts... think I'm going to have to pull the motor . Buggar Picked up a 6 pin voltage regulator off a mate of mine that came from his old ke35.. I assumed toyota would of used the same.. yep I was right. Well that sorts out the low 12.8v while car running issue Didnt fix the issue with how the cars running though..
Matteybean
Can anyone recommend a mechanic in Auckland who is good with old cars? This 4m has defeated me I've tried everything and I can't get it running properly. Everything is new on it and I can't figure it out so it's time someone else does. Popular Post Matteybean
Alright mumma never raised no quitter after alot of perseverance and some fresh eyes weve got it going! Thanks to everyone who offered ideas. So I had the ignition side of the wiring all re done with new relay. The dizzy cap was giving shit spark to #1 Bought a new dizzy cap and rotor Took all plugs out cleaned up still no go. Turns out a rogue plug wasnt giving consistent spark so replaced all plugs and checked resistence in the leads which all were fine. It would start up fine but when getting warm it would start to run like a bag of dicks.. over fueling and smoking like no bodies business.. Started looking at carb videos thinking I would be replacing the jets/adjusting floats I noticed in the videos their choke was fully open at 180 degrees and mine wasnt... no where close Heres a pic of when the engine is warm and the electric choke fully open.. Pretty sure suppose to be more like this anyway after rotating the cap when engine was warm to keep it fully open it ran great! Few trips up and down the street no hesitation or bogging down and buggar all smoke!! Drove up and down the road half a dozen times noticed temp guage rising so put it back in shed to give it a once over - boiled thermostat it didnt open so I'll grab another tomorrow. Sump still leaks so I'll need to remove motor to goo up sump gasket proper. Then wof
Popular Post Matteybean
Rememeber to change your sump gasket before installing motor into your ms65 because the cross member is so fucking big its impossible to do on the car. Yes I tried.. 1st attempt I lifted motor enough to undo sump bolts, drop steering and remove sump - I used a new cork gasket and re fitted without any luck. This time round I'm moving the whole motor to seal it up good and while motor out tidy up a few bits in engine bay Now the engines stone cold the choke is at this position, I'm going to mark the casing and use this as a reference point to rotate the eletric choke housing a couple clicks until I get it right. I will need to play around with the cold idle speed screw but once i put motor back in and all going well no leaks with sump I should be able to get it pretty right. Getting closer.
Matteybean
Sumps all gooed up and torqued back on fuck I hope it doesnt leak. Did a bolt check of the motor and decided to paint the front bits of the alternator I've marked a reference point in the electric choke housing and rotated it 2 clicks clockwise and see how it goes once I fire it up. Before I put the motor back I'm going to check and make sure all the lights/indicators are still working/replace bulbs, general bolt check all round and put motor back in tomorrow/Sunday Gasket goo says wait 24 hours so I'd better wait that Atleast. I dont want to pull it back out again.
Popular Post Matteybean
My brother came over and gave me a hand we got motor back In and it ran like a fucking dream. Turns out the breather hoses on the block were looped which would explain the blowing sump gaskets and oil pushing past the rings. Lovely. It started up first pop. Went for another hoon. Gearbox mount is fucked. It's now completely split and the when driving the driveshaft smashes into shit cuz the arse end is free balling... I knew it was on it's way out/completely fucked and struggled to find anything when I last had it out. I decided I'd have a crack at making my own mount using liquid polyurethane 2 part with a shore hardness of 45. Cleaned em up Got it lined up using the bolts Used some cardboard to block off the edges This is what I used Mixed it 1:1 I had previously gone around the outside of the carboard and mount with silicone to close off any holes/gaps and veeeerry slowly poured it in to prevent any air stuck in it. Let it cure for 24 hours de mould it and chuck in oven for 6 hours at 50degree and should be away laughing.
