200amp  or so,  depends what you are starting.     I usually dont bother with anything,  put an isolator some where within reach of driver.  run  the cable somewhere where its not likey to get damaged in a crash,  use decent cable and will be fine.

sweet as, got a pinto in it I wouldn't bother either but rather be on the safe side and the cable is a about 150mms short so makes a good excuse for a join lol.

Got the cable running through firewall directly behind starter then across the floor to the boot, and using heavy as welding cable.

Yeah, around 200A is what you want. As kpr said you can get away without anything if you make sure that the cable is properly protected and can't rub through. If you wanted some additional peace of mind or a junction you would be fine with just a fuse, which would be cheaper then a circuit breaker
