77magnum13hundy
Apologies if this has been covered somewhere else... So the bearings in my alternator are a bit squeaky, how much of a job is it to get new bearings and stick them in? Where does one purchase the bearings? would i just go to SKF or somewhere and get the same ones? This is for a 89 corolla. It would be nice to be able to do this myself, and certainly a lot cheaper than getting it done by a shop. Any info is appreciated Cheers
Rookie
It probably is worth talking to a shop, they do it every day and are usually super quick at doing it/ have specialist tools etc. I have been charged $60 for labour to rebuild an alternator, SHGWAG wouldn't even get out of bed for that.... But yea any bearing place should have them if they are a standard item. Where are you based.
77magnum13hundy
West auckland, i thought they'd be like 200 or so
Spencer
These alternators are super simple, I wouldn't take it to a shop. The bearings are standard and shouldn't be more than a few $ each, I'm too lazy to do it for you but find a Toyota manual for a 4age or something and follow the procedure if you need it. Spencer
Well you are away then, older alternators can be awkward to replace bits as they are all soldered in or non-repairable. Newer stuff like this is all modular and simple to pull apart, manual will show you how to lock back the brushes when chucking it back together.
