J-W-G
Just my luck. 3 days till nats and the escorts fucked out. It had developed a slight miss and has totally bottomed out since then. Okay so me and dad have checked the plugs, leads, coil and dizzy. Carb is squirting petrol aswel. It cranks over fine just dosent fire. So with that info could a jet be blocked? Ignition problem? Hopefully can get it sorted before nats! Cheers guys

peteretep
timing good or has it moved? not many reasons that fuel would squirt everywhere, maybe shit in the carb? is the filter clean?
Sorensin
Sorry I didn't read the carb squirting as a problem i read it as the carb was squirting properly, if you fill the carb and disconnect the fuel pump, and crank it over till it uses the gas see if it will rinf got a few seconds? maybe carb is flooding and overfilling float? J-W-G
Ahh sorry by that i ment the carb is still working as it should. Sorensin read it right. I am a total noob with timing. How do i go about it on a crossflow?
Sorensin
quick check dizzy bolt tight, dizzy timing moved? more likly than the chain slipped but nothing is impossible!
J-W-G
Just checked dizzy, and spark all round again. Ignition is sweet. Now im seriously thinking its the carb? Blocked jet? Split diaphragm?
peteretep
Its unlikely as the car should still start if there is fuel, although if there was too much fuel then maybe not, have you tried engine start? It might be that the spark is too weak to allow the engine to run but shows a spark, my velodrome bike had this as the windings in the coils were buggered Or it could be that the timing is still too far out? J-W-G
Just chatting with dad he reckons it couldnt be the timing as i was happily driving it without a hitch 3days ago! Will try a new coil ive got see if i get a stronger spark. Reading from other x-flow guys it could be a split diaphragm in the carb?
weds_69
hey man i was reading in my classic ford mag, for the timing turn the timing bolt at the bottom of the motor where normally the fan is connected to,so that the number 1 piston is at the top, the groove should be in line with the 8 or the 10, you can normally check by taking the first spark plug out. when is is up at the top the points in the distributor should be just about to open if they arn't loosen the distributor bolt and advance or retard the distributor until its just about to open then tighten the bolt back up or just enough so that you can turn it once the motor has started. also ive had a problem once before with my escort where it was going and then it randomly started playing up then didnt go, i found out from the aa guy that sometimes when a person puts the points back in the distributor they dont space it properly before they tighten it all the way up so also check that as well the spacer is on the top hole of the points breaker plate. let me know how you go

Stacov
Check the condenser, that will cause the car to not fire, and they tend to die randomly only about 15 bucks for a new one from repco worth a try ?
