187inc
Hey forgive me if this has been covered before, i'm thinking of upgrading my pintos' points dizzy to electric but dunno what the best way to do it would be, i've read that you can use a dizzy from early sierras, sentra/sunnys, even city/accords... anybody had some experience as to the easiest way to go about it? rob
dont know much about fords but something like http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Performance/Electronics/auction-308069346.htm this would be the easiest solution. using another car's dizzy will likey require you to shorten/modify the dizzy shaft to fit the gear from your original dizzy onto it. davidian
umm, how about using a sierra elec dizzy? just to state the obv
peteretep
a pertronix kit or a sierra dizzy(dont they have a computer module type thing with them?) would be easiest, otherwise go to pickapart and find an electronic dizzy that is similar to yours and make it fit
187inc
Yeah id seen those kits (like the pertronix on trademe) but they seem pretty expensive for what they are, has anybody actually bought one of these kits and found them successful or not? May just end up hitting up pick-a-part cos im a cheap bastard..
peteretep
if you end up going to pickapart, then likely there will be some machining/cutting & filing to get a distributor that fits
187inc
Does anybody know if a dizzy from a first gen telstar would work?
peteretep
you would have to try it out, compare a standard dizzy with another one and figure out what needs changing, its really not that hard, i was really surprised how easy it was when i did my xflow motor from a subaru ea82 motor
barf
I've seen kitsets by MSD to replace points, not cheap, I suggest address the ignition system as a whole. you're not just replacing a part here, you're moving from kettering points to electronic ignition systems. I like the megasquirt II (ignoring the fuel injection features) it works great in a 'spark-only' application and they're cheap and reliable. they work with almost any crank or cam-speed timing signal, the challenge here is getting a timing signal, use a sensor from a dizzy, install laser-cut disc (+pickup) onto front crank pulley, etc.
peteretep
going to a megasquirt is another complete level above just getting an electronic distributor, and the costs are much higher even though they do give alot more functionality
187inc
Does the standard bosch dizzy on a pinto have a hall-effect sensor??
