starting problems

ok, this si what you do, and if it doesnt work then your fucked :P

-take the #1 plug out (yes, the one closest to the radiator)

-MANUALLY turn the engine untill the piston is Top Dead Center. you can check that by putting a screwdriver into the spart plug hole, and stop turning the engine just before the screw driver starts to go down.

- put the plug back in

- Take the dizzy cap off, and make sure that the rotor is pretty much touching the pin inside the dizzy cap, if not then you'll have to turn and twist it a bit untill it does at least come close. Also check to see if the pins/rotor are dirty/worn.

- If you have taken the complete dizzy out of the block before for some reason, then you might have to pull it out again, turn it and put it back in. if you have not even loosened/twisted the dizzy, then DO NOT LOOSEN IT! because its a bitch to time, and it'll probably be something other then the timing if you havent touched it! While youve got it open, re-set your points with feeler guages, or simply replace them and set them

- turn the engine over WITHOUT the dizzy cap so that you can see if it turns clockwise, or anti clockwise and then wire the leads up to suit using the other info from the haynes manual

- try starting it now. if it runs shit, then its proably just the timing, if it doesnt wanna go, try the following things too;

- take the number one plug out again, set the gap with feeler guages first, then place the plug onto the block so that it's earthed. turn the car over, and listen for a sparking sound.

-If its too loud to hear, pull all the other plugs out too, and also take the leads off, then and try again. if it sparks, put it back into the block, if not, tighten all the connections to the plug/dizzy cap. if it still doesnt work, then try using a different spark plug lead

- repeat the last 2 part with all other plugs.

Now you should know if you have spark on all plugs, and to the correct ones. try starting it again. if it still doesnt go try the following;

- Take the air filter off the carb and see if its pumping fuel into the carb when you move the throttle. if it does, skip the next few steps

- if its not pumping gas into the carb, see if the fuel pump os pumping fuel by disconnecting the hose to the carb, and turning on the ignition (if electric pump) or turn it over a few times (if mechanical pump)

- if no fuels coming through that either, check to see if the pump still works! electric is easy to hear, and mechanical will have to be taken off the car, but you'll need a new gasket to replace the old one though....

- if the pumps buggered, then thats probably your problem, if thats going, then check your fuel filter... thats about as far as you can go with checking the fuel really...

-if you still havent found the problem by now, try the following;

- if you have removed the inlet manifold, i hope you changed the gasket over, as it might be loosing compression through it/no fuel being sucked in as its sucking it through the little holes left behind from the old gasket... so re-do it if thats the case, otherwise just have a quick look if it looks ok, without un-bolting it though, as then you will have to replace it anyway...

- try tightening the bolts holding the inlet manifold on to make sure they are all on tight...

- check to see if all your vacuum hoses are on proberly, and not bent over anywhere because then need to be 'free-flowing'

the few other things that it could still be;

-Crap leads, get them checked with a multi meter of some sorts that can check them

-Spark not powerfull enough, try by-passing the ballast resistor. not sure if thats the best idea, but it worked on the starlet.

Thats about all i can think of myself aye... you'd really wanna get some cool tools etc in, so everything van get checked properly...

last and final thing i can think of is a fucken engine...

good luck :P
