This conversion would be cool as a polar bear's ball bag.

One of the biggest EV bloggers in NZ has one underway now.

I think it's quite a good trolling device...

  2. First road trip in the Outlander PHEV over the weekend, Nelson to Christchurch on Friday night, back yesterday. On the way down set cruise control to 107km/h = GPS 104km/h did 8.4L/100km including overtaking anything moving slower ASAP.

Way home was much more chilled, set cruise to 100km/h, then just sat behind people until a passing lane came up/they pulled over and did 7.2L/100km.

Both without any charging. Come April that will be ~$40 of RUCs so an extra 15L or about the equivalent of 9-10.2L/100km, considering that's the worst case scenario of the new RUCs, and that I'll try and do most of my around town on clean green Geoff juice it's not bad for an almost 2 tonne SUV.

Ralliart Colt is the logical next best choice.

To make sure it hits the shit/tickbox go for the Plus. CVT and boost is actually a ridiculously good combo for economy and power. Little bros 180SX went pop the day before Chrome, so we had to take this instead.

why are the running costs of the tesla so much more than the leaf?

The servicing costs? They were based on what each company provided online (or best estimate I could find) Tesla don't have a recommended service interval so it could definitely be tweaked if you have any better data. My sample size of one is my folks who have done nothing  in 2 years other than buy a spare set of wheels/tyres to make tyre rotation easier.

Can you add my 66 Chev ute please?

It gets 23l/100 highway. I've never taken it into town so no idea what it gets city but I assume worse. As for resale nobody else would be as stupid to get one so that would be n/a.

To play the game properly it needs to have a value. I put it at $1... But you can edit to your hearts content.

That's a hard one to put a figure on. We've made good money on the last two we sold and that's after factoring in the hours we spent. But that could be the case for many a shit box car if you're lucky with the initial purchase. Around these parts it does seem to be getting harder to find really cheap road legal cars and everyone who asks me if I have any/can locate them one seem to want cheap to run small cars.

I'd happily say that k11s and similar cars with a bit of following or good reputation for simple robust reliability are going up at 10% a year.  Certainly after spending this morning working on a kia sportage clutch issue there is no fucking way I would want to own anything more complex than a 90s nissan/Toyota car. I hate the extra shit that's crammed into modern cars now.

Now where did I put my mug of horlicks?

I've just made it twice the marginal interest rate/roughly double inflation. I wonder what @ThePog sold Milly for as that would be hard data. Definitely derailing the EV thread...

Also - with the expected rise in popularity a good k11 won't depreciate.

In fact - it's a solid gold investment. A retirement plan..

I've added a new line for the K11, no maintenance, no depreciation...

It's the winner until petrol hits $5.50/L @7000km/year

I see no $1000 k11 in the list. Economy @5 to 6l/100km.  What's the deal with 91 being at $5 a litre? Is that accounting for oil? If so it's wrong because k11s/wingroads/cheap yarii (plural for Yaris) don't get oil changes unless loved - which is rare.

If you give me a figure at which K11s are appreciating I'll add it up. The reason petrol is at $5/L is that someone must have been experimenting with at what point a new Tesla makes financial sense...

    Looks to be about 925,000km/year...

Blimey. After looking at the total costs maybe I should stick with my shitbox old cars.

    Very helpful. Thanks for sharing!

For 'fun' I just added a row with the 31,000km RX8 for sale on TM at the moment (I couldn't think of much else that is probably on the way up now). Made an assumption that it will appreciate at the current interest rate rather than depreciate the IRD mandated 13%. Makes more sense than my daily @7000km/year apparently...

Depreciation and opportunity cost of the purchase price are huge aspects of running a new car so shitboxes do pretty well.

Isn't that true for all hybrids? Don't they rely on regen braking to top up the battery, so only work well in urban areas, or maybe hilly winding rural areas.

Very true, but I think it's the 2.7L/100km these are rated at which is a bit challenging compared to a Prius which seems to be ~25% worse (ie 4 -> 5L/100km).

Unfortunately they don't go that hard, little bro has a non Nismo one, plus a Leaf, and a 180SX Type X. He drove one as it should have been able to eliminate one of his vehicles. Verdict was it's 98% the same as the non- Nismo plus a kit and the Leaf goes harder/is more fun.

Edit: I should also add here he reckons the e-powers are pretty underwhelming economy wise on a trip, around 5L/100km, so around the same as he used to get in a 1NZFE Corolla wagon.

A colleague has a caravan and lives on a lifestyle block about 10km from Manurewa train station. He bought a PHEV Outlander because it was a good compromise, enough grunt to tow the van a couple of times a year, enough range to do the commute on battery. Even with RUCS, he reckons it's still cheaper and greener than having a petrol or diesel SUV, or a tow car and commuter car.

I have one as a boring daily, has 252kms, range of 35km if you're careful with AC usage. Essentially around town we've had a free-lunch until now. My V8 owning mates don't get that RUCs on everything would likely save them a heap of money too...

Another thing to mention is that the Cabin is now available for rent. The driveway is somewhat Awd access only in the winter or after a rain but even a toyota carib or honda crv would be more than enough. If this cant work for you there is a short walking track up a hill from a car friendly parking spot on the town boundary. Rental rates arent decided entirely yet but have currently been going with $400 per week or $80 per night and my guests seem happy. Can do a smidge cheaper for oldschoolers of course. At these prices its the cheapest off grid cabin style accommodation in the region . The power is solar, the water is rain, the kitchen is gas and the toilet is composting. Off da grid as they say. Live Laugh Log Cabin

Shitchea! How many does it sleep? Super keen for a weekend soon as that spot looks lush and pretty close to us.

Hope they will be removing the doors for that true golf cart experience.

Haha, I said the same but it's going to Franz Josef apparently so there might be a need for heater/shelter from bugs at times too...

  16. A mate sold a Leaf this week for $2.5k, admittedly ~40% SOH but still did 50km at open road speed daily. The new buyer? A campground who was looking at a golf cart to do odd jobs but did the sums and couldn't beat this.

Devils advocate here - a lot of electronics manufacturers specify the battery is end of life at 70% capacity in their manuals so 2/3 is technically dead

Either way, 3 years of benefit is better than 0 years of benefit

8 grand is also bloody cheap for a battery that big

It would be cheap if it were true.

Unfortunately the fact that that part is not true makes me think that the rest of the info is also plucked out of someone's ass.
