Should be able to find a 3.9 easy enough? Plenty of discos + RR going cheap, might be able to get it close to cost neutral by parting one out.

Now to have a go at the dieselly bits....
After looking around at the injector pump, and doing ALOT of googling have come to the realisation this is your standard Bosch A model pump with a pneumatic style governor on the back end of it. From my basic understanding, rather than a set of flyweights you have intake with a throttle butterfly with a vac take off pre and post the butterfly. Depending on the throttle position (and vac differential) it then moves a diaphragm which is connected to the fuel rack - kinda a pretty simple design - your idle and max fuel delivery is then defined by a set of adjustable stops on the butterfly. I found (this setup seems to be found in old mercs) that if the diaphragm is in poor condition then it can lead to overfuelling (my problem). When I pulled the housing there was quite a bit of oil in and around the leather diaphragm. It looked in ok condition so cleaned it up and refit. I suspect a seal has gone somewhere else in the pump (suspect shut off pivot) but I'm hesitant to pull down further until I see how it now runs.
I had also sent my injectors away for a service, I was prepared for the worse but the Barrys said they cleaned up fine and were tweaked to spec.
I had just enough juice in the batt to turn it over enough to bleed half of the lines and then fired up.... Certainly sounds alot smoother, and with a quick run up it looks to be much cleaner out of the exhaust. The diesel in this thing is several vintages old so I'm sure with some fresher stuff it'll do well.

I feel like I've made the most progress in a long while...
Got all the old tyres pulled and sent the rims to the blasters, added a good thick layer of 2k while they were at it. Decided on a generic grey rather than white (to match the roof) as will likely get scratched up and look terrible.
Came up well
There was also another 109 chassis waiting to be blasted when I was there, so thats always a good sign...
Got a good deal on tyres (correctly 235/85/16) and after wrangling up some muscle (aka @azzurro) to haul them back to the warehouse, got em fitted up, reckon they look quite the part.
As per the discussion thread, I've been (rightly or wrongly) having a go at my own upolstery, got one set of seats completed so far. Pros and cons with going with the canvas but will see how we go long term

The tyre warning light came on when I was driving it the other night
After a quick Google search on the side of the road they don't use tyre pressure sensors.
It uses the abs/speed sensors and probably thought something was up because I changed wheel size.
Did the reset procedure put handbrake on turn ignition on hold traction control button down hang tongue out to the left and it went away and hasn't come back yet.
This happens to me every so often if driving through rain. I havent bothered enough to look into it further...

I feel like ill be chased out of here with pitchforks for asking, but ill do it anyway. Has anyone had much experience with these little chinese mini lathes?
I want something to do small turning work, that doesnt take up too much space (can be mounted on an existing solid bench) and youtube videos seem to indicate that they need a lot of tweaking but can turn out some ok results. I think its more money than they are really worth, but my options for smaller lathes locally seems to be really limited as most available are either elsewhere in NZ or big/have their own stand which i dont have space for.
This would be a good option local to you

There is a crap ton of LPG there to be used.... just need to tell Methanex they cant have any more and you have decades worth of transport supply.
But that is politcially unpalatable

I've been having a go at reupholstering the seats myself in a thick canvas, there are really no option for off the shelf of these deluxe seats if you dont want black. These have been redone before and was able to salvage enough to get good patterns. This was last nights attempt, needs some replacement foam before I give it a stretch over, but the right direction to make the next one better.

I was starting to wonder if you still had this… 285/70r16 is massive…. 235/75r16 I believe is as close to 7.50r16 as you can get, and still wider than the o.g.
I did a typo here.... 285 is just silly... yes its 235
I did have it up for sale on a whim and one interested party, decided I was having a moment of sillyness and sticked with it.

Decided to stop feeling sorry that this is tucked away and get to work on it some more...
Its always been a smokey beast... have pulled the injectors to get them re-tipped. The nozzles did look pretty bad
Getting these off to treat for some new shoes. 285/70-16 is what the landy barrys say I should be going for.
How long ago did Goodyear make these here...?

Thoughts on 1st gen Audi TTs, anyone had either the 1,8T 225hp 6MT quattro, or 3.2 VR6 one (appears to be mostly 6DSG, same running gear as R32 golf). They are generally 6-10k atm, i think they can look alright and could be one that starts to climb in price - they look like theyd be pretty fun to pedal especially in manual guise
Hmmmm

To follow up my thoughts on a few good comments here (and to clarify how this gets messaged). I don't believe the idea is to create a new 'car club'. With my exposure, the club scene is mostly meeting up in a rooms, having drinks and banter over some trival minutes/accounts etc with a run here and there. Some of the more organised run a show or two, some get really hard core into club politics/show judging and create their own 'barryness'. NB: I thought the most extreme was the XU1 club, you could join if you had a torana but only 'full voting rights' if your vehicle was verified as a genuine/matching GTR/XU1.
These topics are about advocacy, there's a difference between sitting in a club rooms and chatting/moaning about regulation and another in organising and lobbying to govt for change. The backstory to LVVTA is a great example of this. Likewise, in the court of public opinion the most attention is grabbed by the media who are more than happy to report about Mr RFB/brap brap brap/"OMG, is that a supra!" and the 'boy racers', case in point recent with the milk tanker incident. Without some set of organisation to reflect the needs of this community (as it has very much matured) we're going to end up in a regulatory environment which could be less than ideal.
I don't have any industry connections which would be helpful (though potentially some ppl which worked for MPs) but happy to chip a few dollars into creation of an incorportated society (or similar) and contribute my time to at least see if this idea has wings.

I think its important up front to define what you'd want to achieve through creation of an organisation, very easy to get sidetracked with more ppl coming on board and with agendas...
Distilling what is in alot of this thread, I think this largely comes down to advocating for the community around issues which affect all enthusiests. Aspects around importation/licensing/regulation affect this community in a similar, but different way to NZHRA and there currently exists no central 'voice to be heard'. Likewise promotion of the scene without getting into events/judging etc. I think the 'older' club model has challenges in this day and age so being affiated with some of the incumbents rather than trying to replicate what they have is a better tact.

Is it just me or have some of the froth come out of prices recently? $1 res auctions look to be ending with more sensible numbers, especially stuff that needs a bit of work.
Economic jitters are out there so might shake out a few more deals than the moonbeams of 2021

Ok so, thanks to @cletuspush and connections I had a chat to Tony, the CEO of LVVTA yesterday. He suggested there is a significant lack of younger demographic represented, and that there is the need for a National Association to represent both these people and the performance car (modern classic/import/japanese/nostalgic/anything) scene.
It's actually quite involved, and requires a decent amount of set up. I'll be chatting to the head of NZHRA to work out the process, but basically, I'm happy to be involved to be some form of change, I just wanted to know if anyone is?
It would be good to have a few to throw ideas around with, before approaching bigger groups of people / going deeper into it. If you are, you can send a PM or write in here.
100% support this in any format, either $$ to form an appropriate entity, and/or admin help. Finding support from those that have trod this path would be key, i.e. become affiliated with NZHRA and/or VCC.
Surely an organised association should get the support of those deeper into the scene, i.e. those that run 4nR (whoever they are...?)- 5

If you were decent at machining, how difficult would it be to convert a live axle to independent? Cut the tubes off, bore out for side seals and make up the shafts? That early Lister looks to have inboard rear drums so likely a workshop job?

^ Its painful but good karma.
I onsold a 4age block a few years back which I was told and thought it was good. Young buyer got it home and stripped it down - it was trash.
I refunded him it all, even though he could have recouped a few $$ in the ancillary parts.
The car scene needs GCs in a sea of dodgy traders.
