Pop the pistons out of the calipers, give it a good clean up with a scotchbrite on the piston and bore.
Carefully pluck the seal out and check there isn't a crud build up in the grove where they sit.
If you're careful you can re use your seals and dust boots. Good blead up and it should be good.
Pushing the pistons back and forward doesn't really remove the crud, it doesn't take much crud to make an imbalance either.
Better living everyone.

Bad HT lead?
Intake air leak?
Crappy distributor cap/rotor?
I'd be looking at the leads first.

Lols at the comparisons being drawn between this and other high performance engines of the ilk, such as K series, A series, and Holden 6.

ARA Bus.
I've see a bendy buss from the same era getting around ChCh. I'll snap a pic of it if I get a chance.

We took our LPG bulk tank at work out and have storage containers in it's place. And swap a bottle.
Which garage was that?
Pitty really, lots of garages have done the same. Alot seemed to price themselves out of the market.

@kws it will help your oil pressure issue. Engines loose pressure due to excessive clearance.
Top end noise is probably the lifters bleeding down due to low oil pressure.
I'd give it a try if it was mine.
Thankfully it's yours though.
Edit.
Fair enough though if you want to upside. It's the perfect excuse.

Leave the engine in place, pull the sump off and sneak a set of big end bearings into it.
If it hasn't run a bearing It's a legitimate fix. It'll solve your problem for a couple of hundred dollars and a few hours work.

Are the side bearings pressed all the way home on the carrier?
(I’ve seen it happen before)

Have you calculated the effect of a better flowing exhaust?
I theorise it may be directly proportional to the level of how hard it goes vs what it is

A good mate of mine has become a horsey spouse over the past few years. The float is a tandem axle, with braked axle, 5 stud with a 5" PCD. What are the (hopefully) 14" wheel options, and does anyone have a pair or more available?
HQ holden.

Could be a Ford Laser but the grill makes me think BH Familia.
