  1. Hello. I have had several Escorts, vans and cars done by Lewton Engineering and Bruce Thompson Motor bodies. Thompson does a few classic cars and are older guys who take pride in their work. Check the Wellington white pages on line for details. Lewton is a private operator that does excellent structural re-build work. He charges out at $60/hour. The other one I have had my bumpers straightened at is Earls Body Shop Eastern Hutt road Wingate Lower Hutt. Expensive but a perfect job every time. Earl can rebuild the entire car if you want. Regards, John
  2. Richard, this is John in Lower Hutt. We have been racing an escort at speedway and have been using a lockup workshop in Stokes Valley. We are no longer racing but have a few spare parts and a couple of cars we are working on. My son and I share the facility. Can get 5 cars in the place. We are pulling out in August unless we get someone in with us to share the $450/month rent. You might be interested in taking it over completely or sharing the rent. Contact me on 569-9932 or 021-569993
  3. Has anyone tried this product yet? ZDDPlus additive. Someone has been selling it on TM last week but sudenly stopped. I downloaded the TechBrief PDF's, good reading anyway. Sounds like the oil companies are mostly making motor oil for new cars with cat converters and the goodies are slowly being taken out. The ZDDP companents are what we really need for the old steel blocks and rings. Suits replacement to modern oils. Like upper cylinder lubricant we have to put in the petrol tank these days. Check the maker web site for details; http://www.zddplus.com/
  4. Hi, I'm John from wellington. What exact model carb is it. There are only two 32/36 version you cam use with a standard or GT camshaft. I have several reconditioned like new 32 DGAV 5E carbs that have been rebushed by weber in Auckland. The problem might be that the primary shaft with the butterfly plate on it is loose in the housing. If you can lift the shaft up and down or side to side then it is shot and it is impossible to get good idle. I had the same issue as you years ago. Also the only carbs with the correct progressive idle holes in the housing for 1600 engines is the following 32 DGAV 5E 32 DGAV 6E (auto) 32/36 DGV 7A 32/36 DGAV 3B. All others have larger idle holes and are very rich at low RPM and at idle. This makes the idle screw adjustment very hard to determine. I think it is the shaft problem you are having. Teflon bushes can be put in your carb for $100 including P&P in Auckland. I am in Australia for work at the moment but will be back home in WGTN on May 6th. can help further then. Check also the crank case breather PCV valve is not blocked open and put a vacuum gauge on the manifold to determine further what state the vacuum really is. Cylinder compressions should be taken with FOT as the carb will not allow idle if the vacuum is uneven. hope this helps, regards John
  5. Quality rebuilds did a couple for me and they are like new. Perfect timing every time. One thing you might need to strip down several dizzys to get one with a good shaft. The shafts usually wear badly. Quality rebuilds has been sold to an Auckland buyer. Uses the same name and should have the gear to do the job. For the KENT crossflow dizzy it requires 2x bushes at $20 each plus labour. Well worth the money. Check this. http://www.qualityrebuilds.com and Quality Rebuilds Ltd. 85 Polo Prince Drive, Manurewa, MANUKAU CITY 2576 Phone 09-267-4700. Hope this helps. I also run Bosch MK3 Escort dizzys in my KENT block. Got from UK. Really good but $$$. cheers.
