  1. Fitted a mx73 lip with a bit of trimming and reshaping, swapped to the earlier pre facelift twin headlights and grill
  2. Back again with another gx61! Purchased this about 4 months ago from Christchurch. Listed as a 4 cylinder on trademe so I never paid any attention thinking it was a poverty spec sx60. It then halved in price as the cambelt broke. So I did what any sicko does and bought a car that doesnt run at the other end of the country. Had my legend friend Todd collect it and replace the cambelt and waterpump on the 1geu (non interference) ready for me to fly down and sail it 1000kms home.
  3. Yeah definitely upgrade that diff before the engine. Axles dont last very long from previous experience
  4. i was actually just thinking this week that i wondered how you were getting along with this. Are you still planning on doing an engine swap?
  5. I now own this beast! Can't find the original build thread. Thinking it maybe in the guest erra? Looking forward to getting it low on some wide 14s with an engine upgrade also!
  6. The road to toytafest! Here's a pic to prove i made it, will post how I got there in the coming days
  7. https://touch.trademe.co.nz/motors/listing/view/1281224025 this should help with progress!
  8. Before purchasing i checked that it had conventional coil spring suspension as i wanted to lower it fairly easily. The day after purchasing i pulled the rear springs out and replaced with some trimmed b310 front King springs as they were same OD and coil thickness and trimmed a coil and a half off the front to drop it around 40mm all round. The front shocks aren't rebounding so ill trim springs further to desired height or perhaps go on a zebra mission to find something a bit stiffer then replace shocks and shorten to suit. B4 After Keen to hear opinions about returning window frames to white and tint removal, i think the tints don't really suit an older car but being able to roll around 7 deep without prying eyes seems like a plus...
  9. Since they produced this shape from 83 im clipping it in here! Im the second NZ owner since it came into the country in '94. It was a decent price and the right stud pattern for some japanese 14s. Ill throw some interior pics up of the 7 seats shortly, interior is quite tidy with an elderly couple having owned it for 23 years. Its 1.8 FWD 5 speed with 167,000kms on the clock. I plan to drop it as much as possible and fit some the widest 14s it will allow - it takes a 5.5j +46 offset 13 from stock so feeling too ambitious on width. It currently has very dark tints which I'm undecided on and metal monsoons which has been spray bombed along with the window frames which I'm pretty keen to rectify.
  10. I thought i would have this going by Christmas but did absolutely nothing over the holiday period. Have got back into the swing of things now with the engine and gearbox back in place Ive removed the severely damaged dash in favour of one with only one crack in it, still keen to have that repaired at some point however ill leave it for now I have undertaken most of the wiring, this has taken me a bit longer than expected as ive tried to use the 1geu engine loom as a kind of adapter plug to the 2jzge engine loom plugs so have been slowly identifying each wire, a great tip i discovered regarding a ma61 ecu which turned out to be same on my 1geu ecu is if you pop the cover off the board is actually marked with the ecu pin out with labels that are relevant to the wilbo666 jza80 2jzge wiring diagrams, this drastically sped the process up as i was able to eliminate everything i didnt need from the plugs. You will see I've taken apart way more of the dash than i would need to, this was due to literally every piece of plastic being cracked from mistreatment, most of it i have undamaged replacements for but i feel there will be a few bits ill need to pickup or try repair in the mean time. I also noticed all of the plastic pipes for the heater have been removed and outlets taped up, not too sure what this is about but i have a spare heater and ac unit in stock so ill look at checking these out and restoring that! I thought i had struck gold with some monsoon sheilds listed on yahoo auctions japan as gx61 that were chaser specific with a small decal printed on them and came with all the clips and even the bonnet emblem which i was missing and the avante and chaser boot badges However it appears they were for a gx71 hardtop Luckily i was able to pass them on to someone locally who could use them and still use the emblem for the bonnet and the boot badges so not a complete loss Next mission has been the front bumper support. The face lift iron was rusted very badly but upon inspection the pre-face lift has the same core with a few additions of indicator brackets and a top piece spot welded on. These bits aren't too badly rusted on the toasted FL support so I've drilled the spot welds and removed them to weld on my PFL support which actually seems to be pretty good condition. Whilst all of this is going on ill fix the number plate holder tabs that always break off on these too Ill get a friend to weld this up today and then strip it all back and treat rust before painting in a flat black Ive just got the mx83 alloy radiator to mount and plumb in the engine bay, connect the electric fans, finish wiring behind glove box, reinstate dash, finish aligning headlights and fit the facelift front bumper and then off to toyota festival at hampton downs on april the 1st hopefully!
  11. Thanks mate, ive got my work cut out to make everything tidy again but ill get there! Look forward to seeing pics of the jzx31 painted!
  12. Thanks Clint! I will be enlisting your services once I have everything sorted for certification!
  13. After removing the engine i saw the brake and clutch master cylinder must have been leaking at some point and had stripped the paint below so decided it was a good opportunity to tidy that up and paint the rest as well. Happy not to find any rust under the wiper cowl and around the front door jambs where they usually corrode. The surface rust was all stripped back and treated with 2 coats of Brunox and then primer layered on the areas where we had gone back to bare metal. next the black base coat was applied Now this is where the party starts. Two layers of clear were applied with Lil Daddy Roth's 'Trippin crystal Beth' metal flake mixed through Finally four coats of clear layered on top to effectively sink the flake to give a smooth finish. I couldnt be happier with the end result, the work was done by a friend as a labour swap in exchange for some building work so hasnt cost me a dime. The flake changes in the sunlight as seen in the video in the post above -sorry im unsure how to embed an instagram video- from green to blue and also purple. The inspiration came from this model which ive seen online, Im thinking i may paint the roof pad to match and get rid of the rising sun which the seller had told me was a sticker which upon further inspection is painted Who knows, maybe the entire car will end up this colour

  15. A couple of weeks ago I located an eagle mask sx60 (facelift mark II) that i believe used to belong to 'pies' on here? The car was in Kihikihi and was in a beyond repair state so a price was paid to take everything off it. Barnz.NZ and I shot down early saturday morning with an empty datsun wagon and a trailer which we filled to the brim. This had a few crucial pieces i needed some of which i was gearing up to buy from japan. The front which i intend to swap to had one of the headlights and corner lights broken and the other headlight quite badly chipped but after some research i found facelift chaser and mark ii actually use the same headlight but with different brackets to position the relative to corner light and grill size. Here are both of them pictured to show what i mean Facelift Mark II Facelift chaser I still need to obtain that drivers side corner light for the last piece of the puzzle but have a lead on a pair in Malaysia. I also managed to get facelift bumpers and almost every interior piece to replace what has been broken in mine, I may even swap the side windows over as some of mine is scratched and etched with two different regos This week ive stripped engine bay completely and removed guards and wiper cowl ready to paint/ under seal. I haven't stumbled across any nasty surprises yet which I'm glad about, just a bit of paint stripped from leaking brake and clutch master cylinders which I'll treat before paint. I've also set about changing all the locks and ignition to a set i have which uses one key for the lot as all exterior ones were damaged beyond use. The interior has been stripped out so i can fabricate the driveshaft hoops once engine bay is painted and so i could replace the broken boot release cable and give the carpet a good clean if i cant find a decent replacement Also picked this up from a friend who i bought this for a few years ago while in japan
  16. Day after the warrant sticker went on cube racing bush arrived and installed as well as the marlin crawler shifter seat.gearbox feels like it should now! Before and after Full set of facelift chaser doorcards arrived from Todd down the line along with one of the headlights, corner lights and grill that match the bonnet already on my car. Doorcards cleaned up nicely with the turtle wax interior cleaner Few more photos to post over the next few days of recent acquisitions. Things are moving quickly!!
  17. I want to fit headlights from a facelift gx61 chaser onto a pre facelift, this requires cutting front panel from circular to oval around where the lights go so they can slide across., I have the correct panel to use as a jig, is this legal to do?
  18. For warrant im putting the 8j focus on the rear with the 195/45 toyo t1rs and ill put some 185/60 on these 6j enkei cross fevers up front. i see above mention of the shifter being very poor, upon investigation this is due to the rubber/metal bush in the selector being very worn, it looks like an attempt to fix this was made by wrapping the nylon socket on the end of shifter with masking tape to build it up Ive ordered a solid replacement from cube racing from Australia which comes with a small rig to press the new one in Will update on how it works when it arrives and will also one of the marlin crawler shifter seats as that is also non existent. Something that always bugged me seeing this car for sale was the lack of leather shifter boot even though it was a factory manual so i had one made up. The original one must have perished but the metal ring was still there and i had a brown one to take in as a template Here is the new heart awaiting Wof to be put in Also have a full set of facelift chaser door cards on the way as well as grill and one of the headlights which i already have the bonnet from.
  19. 'The plan' warrant and rego then 2jzge and coilovers and cert. Failed wof on 2 tierods and an idler arm all of which I have in Stock from two previous x6 chassis so will get in asap for the re-check then exile the 1Gay. Pics to come
  20. Step one- Remove Chinese 15x8s and install 14x8 and 9 focus racing spoke
  21. Have now acquired this! Looking forward to rescuing her!
