  1. So, it appears that the sensor wire for the TPS just started reading correctly one day and has been fine since, so can confirm with an adapter plate made, a TPS from a ~2003 Mazda will fit once the connector for the Mazda TPS is soldered on to the old loom.

Now to crack on and try to sort this horrible misfire which is got so bad now I don't want to drive the car! Will start with deleting cat and replacing fuel filter. Thanks for all the advice so far guys :)

    Neither can the Mrs puukuu

I got a arduino starter kit ages ago. Dies anyone have recommendations on learning how to code? I want to make some displays with my nixies at some point.

Have you had a look at this guy? He seems to know what he's doing

I haven't tried this stuff earlier for two reasons- lack of useful projects and the idea that they were too spendy and bulky to be used for permanent (set and forget) type projects. It feels foreign to me that you could have this programmable computer hidden away for the sole task of (for example without thinking too much about it) dimming your interior lamp and flashing your indicators...but then for $5 why can't it just do those things?

I basically just want mine to display dash indicator symbols; handbrake, headlights, indicators, alternator etc which should be bloody easy (hard for me but an achievable goal)

I thought this initially too, but you can get Arduino copies cheap as chips from Ali Express, like just a few dollars and they do the job just as good as the original.

It's also possible, once you have tested your project with Arduino and breadboard to then copy the code over to a smaller chip which can be run standalone in a project which frees up the Arduino for use on other projects. I bought a few of these chips but I can't remember the part number right now. If you're interested, let me know and I'll find out the details.

The programming part is also pretty simple if you've done C/C++ before as it's pretty identical from what I've seen, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Just my 2c as I have a couple of Arduino's and I've played around with them a bit, but I've not really used it for anything, in particular lol.

  4. I'm really getting in to 3D modelling at the moment. If anyone has anything relatively simple I could model up for them, I'd be keen for the practise!

Will probably need drawings to work from, though.

Shit can happen, I've lowered the hoist and an open van door hit the post. Sounds like these guys handled it perfectly.

Yeah, I think they did. Just never been in this situation so didn't know what I should do about it. Had some very good advice from here though and hopefully it's fixed by the end of today :)

  6. Yeah, it's not the best thing to happen, but I've been in customer service long enough to know that raging at people doesn't solve anything, will just make me look like a dick, haha.

I'm not happy and a little upset cause it shouldn't have happened, but we're all human and accidents happen sometimes. I just have to trust that it will be repaired well and in a timely manner.

seeing that dent, I'd say good on the repair shop for owning up to it!

Many places wouldn't say a thing and just say it must have already been there.

Yeah, kudos to him for calling me and owning up to it! He's also a EX Lancer enthusiast so he sounds pretty keen to get it sorted properly. This car is still in "out of the box" condition, so I hope it gets sorted.

  8. Just called the insurance company and at first they tried to get me to make a claim, but after explaining I was just after advice at this stage, they pretty much said what @fuel advised; Let the garage repair it and get insurance company involved if it's not satisfactory and it won't affect my premium or anything cause they'll call the garage to confirm fault.

So I looked at it this morning and it's not as bad as I expected, thank god. Just a dent about half way up the a-pillar. Chrome moulding is still untouched, whew! He knows how particular I am so I let him sort out getting it repaired for me as he knows a guy who has all the old paint code information so hopefully the repair meets my standards otherwise I'll make a claim with insurance company.

    Thanks guys.

I'd still contact your insurance company and ask them for advice. They might want to send someone out to check it. I'd actually want that personally.

Also, how safe is a hoist that can have that happen????

Exactly my thoughts about the hoist safety.

When he called, he accepted fault and said "It needed to be fixed and do I have a preference for a repairer?", but I wasn't sure whether I should still get my insurance company involved. I'm thinking yes just in case?

  10. Hey guys,

    I need some advice please!

Took my car in to a garage today to get the brake imbalance sorted and I get a call this evening to say that they had an accident and some numpty pulled the air hose out of the hoist which my car was under and the hoist dented in my A-Pillar.

I didn't really know what to do so I just told him thanks for letting me know and left it at that. Then I tried to call my insurance company (Swann Classic Car Insurance), but their business hours are 8:30-5.

Tomorrow morning I'll go over there and take some pics of the damage and call insurance company again.

I've never been in this situation before, am I going about it the right way? Should I be doing anything else?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  11. So I've got some new parts and replaced some stuff since I posted last, but I'm still facing more issues. Argh!

Mass Air Flow Sensor (Part: E5T00172) which I managed to find on Ebay.

I also got the below from rockauto.com as they were less than 1/3 what I would have to pay from NZ. I've only fitted  MAS and the oxygen sensor so far...

Part Number Part Type Price EA Core EA Quantity Total
    1987 CHRYSLER CONQUEST 2.6L 156cid L4 Turbocharged
    STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS AX7 Air Intake / Charge Temperature Sensor AU$ 26.86 AU$ 0.00 1 AU$ 26.86
    1987 MITSUBISHI CORDIA 1.8L L4 Turbocharged

    1987 MITSUBISHI STARION 2.6L L4 Turbocharged
    DENSO 2341052 (234-1052) Oxygen (O2) Sensor AU$ 26.41 AU$ 0.00 1 AU$ 26.41
    Shipping Economy (Consolidated) AU$ 19.02
Carrier may collect duty and tax upon delivery &nbsp
    Order Total

    AU$ 91.62

I have a TPS conversion kit from a Mazda on it's way too, but I'll post about that once I receive it.

So, I've replaced the MAS and O2 sensor and this is where I'm still running in to problems. After replacing the two sensors, I used K&N filter cleaning kit and cleaned the foam air filter and re-oiled, cleared the codes and took the car for a drive to get it nice and hot.

Once I finished driving I parked it up and checked the codes again and I still had a code for the TPS and ISC, but the MAS code was gone, YAY!

But, I checked the codes again today after changing the O2 sensor and the code for the MAS is back and the O2 is not going away once the engine is running like it did before. Does anyone have any input on this? Could the air flow sensor have failed already, or do I need to wait for the new TPS before jumping to conclusions?

Any help or input on this is much appreciated. Thanks.

@Scrubb can you please PM me your number and I'll get Ant from BNT New Lynn to phone you back directly.

The staff there are in the middle of stocktake and probably didn't have a chance to even pass the message on to him (branch manager). They have a few different sensors available.

Failing that Rockauto may also have what you need, I recently bought an OEM Denso O2 sensor and a coil unit for an early '80s Mazda turbo engine for a fifth of the quoted price from Petroject.

That'd be great @0R10N! I'll PM you my number now.

I have looked at Rockauto and they have a listing for TPS for a Cordia which will probably end up costing about $300! Can't find any O2 sensors unfortunately:

No you buy the correct o2 sensor and tps from aliexpress china using the original part # to search and identify them then you get the correct sensor with the right range and factory plugs etc

my $300 O2 sensor that was $150 on eBay was $40 on aliexpress

@Transom, I didn't even think to look on Ali Express actually. Just had a look now and they've only got this which I can't be sure is correct as I don't have the part numbers but it may work? I'll keep my eye out on there for automotive goodies :)

Aliexpress for cheap 02 sensors and tps

find the oem part number and search using that - cheap just takes a week or 2 to get here

So any O2 sensor will do? They don't have different specs?

Also, I think I've found the part number for the TPS and I've searched online and don't really feel comfortable paying ~$300 for what seems to be, just a potentiometer!

  14. I've managed to find a brand new OEM Mass Air Flow Sensor so I've bought that.

Now I need the oxygen sensor - Is anyone able to assist in sourcing this? I've called BNT New Lynn as OR1ON suggested, but they seemed confused and never called me back.

I also can't get any voltage out of my TPS sensor, although the impedance across 2 of the pins changes when I rotate the arm, but doesn't appear to be as smooth as I expect. Is anyone also able to assist in sourcing this? Researching online suggests I can use a TPS from a ~2003 Mazda 323/626/Familiar (Just have o re-wire to fit the Mitsubishi plug), and gives better performance, so this may be even better, but I'm unsure where to go to try and find one, except online, but I don't want to do that and find I pad 3x more than I would have if I got locally.

I had a play with the Cordia today, one of the fuel injector plugs had some corrosion and a crack, cleaned it up and the car is going much better, might be something to look at.

That makes sense as multiple people here are advising there is a common issue with the injectors, but I'm not getting a code for that, so I'll check that after replacing these sensors. :) I know for a fact the connectors on my injectors are broken so they do need attention!

  15. So I managed to pull the fault codes off it today and this was the result:

    1. O2 sensor (This only came up once each time I started the engine, which is weird because the other codes were persistent)
    3. Mass Air Flow Sensor
    5. Throttle Position Sensor

Tomorrow I'm going to have another look at the air flow sensor and see if I can clean it better and also attempt to adjust/reset the TPS and hopefully soon I'll get a pipe to put in place of the cat, so I can eliminate that and see where I end up. Hopefully the Air flow sensor is okay as it seems impossible to find one of those!
