  1. Unless the bent 8 is damn good the less front weight V6 is the choice for handling and could make a bit of decent power. Downside I see is the extra weight the Calais comes with. Swap rear setup and nice front shocks and maybe an upsize swaybar. Is the V8 sway bigger? Nice score x 2
  2. Been a while since I posted but thought I would share my misfortune and luck. I went to the drags the other weekend towing my car and as I pulled out of Shell the carby shit itself and started running rich as feck. I got to the track and back home after having to idle it at about 2500-3000rpm and decided it was time to throw the 4-barrel on it. After trying the 600 admitted defeat as I bought it off TM as a rebuilt tested carb which flooded the first time I started and couldn't run no matter what I tried so bit the bullet and went to my parts box and pulled out the old 450 4-barrel which has been passed around on all sorts of V8's from a 253 to a 350 in a 4wd and it ran. Not great but I could drive it. Just finished giving the old a girl a tune and now it's running better than it ever has and pulls well to 5000rpm, next has to be the flows and maybe the cam later. I also have a VH dizzy which I bypassed the computer by running it direct to the ignition
  3. I actually found an incar video against a quick Holden ute where i hit 3rd way too early. I think this was my 3rd run and I sorted the shift light after this run.
  4. Dizzy could be fluttering. Too much play in the shaft. Bad earth can cause all sorts of dramas. hmm can't think of much else than already done
  5. Well after the hiccup with the head gasket I repaired it and then took it to the Drag racing yesterday. Off the trailer it ran a 14.1 @ 97mph with a 1.97 60ft - I was like sweet that launched and no spinning I then ran a few 14.0's while I tried to work out my shift light and that pushed me into 13.9 and 13.8's. I DYO'd 13.85 and buttoned off at the line until a Skyline beside me pushed me hard to the line and I ran 13.7 but because he red lit I won The last couple of runs I couldn't get traction and the track was going off as others had similar issues, the weather had a lot to do with it. I was so impressed with this little car and so many others
  6. 2nd time out never went so good. I blew a head gasket. I have pulled it apart and I cant see much so maybe an air lock or blockage. I will pull the cooling apart as much as I can to check and while I have it in bits I will make some alterations to the cooling and check its circulating good.
  7. I was actually trying work out why I blew a head gasket, the head gasket had split with one of the 3 layers was almost completely peeled. I also had sludge in the water which i cleaned out once but still had a smaller quantity. I need it reliable and running cool so any advice or checks? Cheers
  8. awesome info but too late, they are like a centrifugal springy double spline setup which once they come apart its friggin impossible to put back together, I might try my mate as they access to some trick gear..... fingers and toes crossed or its a new cam and if thats the case I wanna bigger one!!! I went out pulled bolts out tried the cam cover and pop it came off, go figure, best I can tell is maybe it was the oil seal?
  9. I am trying to do a simple job but have come pretty well stuck. BEAMS Altezza 4 cylinder manual with dual VVTI I can't find a manual to check how to remove them on the tezza motor I am stuck and can't see what is stopping it, the front cam mount/cover will not come off, I can move the cams and it will lift a few mm's but will not come up, I even removed the cam sensors with no luck. I can't see any bolts and it lifts clear of the raised guides on the side.
  10. So I fixed a couple of minor things which should smooth the ride a bit more, the rear brakes need to work out where to put the rear/front adjustment so i will have a fiddle with that next time out. Friday 22nd test day is planned for some serious testing and learning for me/ Diff was welded up in readiness for the drags on 24th and will do for test day and give me a benchmark. Still no rear swaybar but figured i will try something light to start with, maybe a 2litre coupe, Pickapart will get a visit. I so looking forward to the next two weekends, this weekend is watching some racing in the Lady Wigram.
  11. Cheers, It feels like I have achieved a few hurdles already. Built a trailer and set the car up with new running gear. I like setting myself what I feel are achievable goals as it helps keep myself motivated to get the next one done.
  12. Well the Starezza had it's first run at Ruapuna this morning in a Test session, I mainly wanted to check that it kept cool and the handling was ok with the additional weight and make sure everything was working as planned. Not that impressive times but I was taking the braking a bit easy and not pushing too hard in and out of some corners with the open diff. Only thing to go wrong was an exhaust gasket blew at the first collector where it goes from 4 into 2 After doing 6 or 7 laps I came in to do some checks and dropped the tire pressure which I will play with over the next few sessions. Engine temp stayed at 180-200 all the time. Right rear tire just rubs slightly on the bump coming out of Pot Hole, easy fix. The single spinner diff didn't help for drive out of the corners and the rear brakes were still bedding into the rusty 35 year rotors. I had a front straight drag with a Toyota 86 race car who was on my tail coming out of the sweeper and it took the entire straight to get beside me so power to weight feels great and the gearing is amazing, I was hitting max revs in 5th down the straight so will be using all 6 gears once I have some drive out of the corners. Power doesn't feel wild but very controlled, I guess typical street tune but I plan to change this in the long term. All in all a happy first up test and I will looking to sort out camera etc for the next one. It was good to hear a few people reckoned it looked quick
  13. I am now in the final adjustment and tweak mode with the car, I tried the 13" rims and they wouldn't fit over the rear disc callipers so made them fit today. The offset puts them just outside the rear guards but my calculations they should hit the stop before they rub. A few other minor things needed.
  14. This is great feedback and food for thought, What weight car and tire pressures cold and hot do you all run? Last time on street tires I started on 25psi which was 30 when I came in the first time on my twin cam 1800 Integra about 1150-1200kg
  15. Hey what oil pressure do these engines run?? I hooked up the pressure gauge which goes to 100PSI and it was 90 when started and then settled to 85 but when I give a little rev to 3500-4000rpm it goes past the 100 and back to the start which I guess is about 120? I have never had anything half that pressure before
  16. Circuit only. I see plenty of sizings for Semis similar to radials. Full slicks are a bit different. I am thinking I might try a couple of Bridgestone RE003 and then once I have the car semi sorted I can use em elsewhere
  17. Ok simple question but I would be interested in everyone's feedback on this subject Size I am after are 15" 185,195 or 205 but prefer the middle, 50 series or less I have seen all these brands but want some feedback on what you have experienced, as I am new to the Semi range apart from a set I had on an underpowered skyline. Dunlop, Bridgestone, Hoosier, Achilles, Federal, Toyo, Hankook, Kumho, Nitto, Westlake, Falken Maybe rate them and add any comment if they were new, secondhand or if they went away after 4 or 5 laps etc. Grip 1-10 Wear Car Weight kW/HP Cost
  18. So 11 months on and a Trailer built as well I am nearing completion, hopefully ready to test sometime next week or week after if I can hook up the oil gauge. Waiting on a phone to turn up so i can make it my obd2 logger system.
  19. scumbags.... Sorry to hear mate. hit the forums an social media
  20. I have mechanical gauges on the dash and even though the electronic ones will let the computer read them I really don't want to install the Altezza dash in the race car. At least that helps me find the oil one and I will likely make an adapter so I can have both, just hope the water temp is not n the back. I might make the track or at least a test drive somewhere this month.
  21. The 202 or in this case 3.3's really respond to small things well as they are a very under-stressed engines. The EST was there to lock the ignition and stop people putting too much advance into the engines to counter the lack of low end power, it really was a shit bit of kit while they waited for the RB engines and the V6 to arrive. I too have gone with a VH dizzy in my VK and immediately it pulls a lot better at lower revs. I also used one in my quick LC and it was mated to a twin coil setup which gave it excellent spark to over 7000rpm. To produce decent power in these old irons the compression needs to be raised but even without that doing the things mentioned in earlier posts all helps. I hope you get to do some mods and look forward to hearing how it goes.
  22. Hi, can anyone tell me the best place or way to install 2 mechanical gauges for water and oil pressure in my Altezza motor?
  23. More work completed in between other things, I am getting ready to test drive soon, I may need to make some clearance around the front of the diff as its tight in the tunnel. Things to do: Finish wiring in switches and kill switch Plumb gauges if I can Bleed the brakes Check diff and gearbox oil and radiator levels Wire the electric fan Remount Seat Buy and mount Belts Mount fire extinguisher Hang fuel line from rear to front. Check clearance of sump on the cross member. Sort wheels and offset and clearances on guards Driveshaft hoop Make spacers for the suspension arms and setup Tighten the diff and suspension bolts etc. Paint and tidy the body and wash. Remount the rebuilt rear calipers Make a Handbrake set up Finish hanging the exhaust (needs a front mount) Check for any holes in the firewall and floor and weld up. And I am sure I have a few other minor things to do but if the test drive in my driveway goes ok I will be wanting to take it for a test sometime.
