  1. Front bumper restoration complete. After giving the bumper a good clean, firstly with a water blaster then scrubbing with a brush and some warm soapy water, I needed to fill in some of the larger scraps and scratches left by the previous owners touch parking attempts. After some sanding and a quick clean with grease and wax remover it was time for a spray with bumper paint, 4 coats later and it was looking pretty good. I also took the time to paint the headlight surrounds, grill, number plate lights and grill. Now all reassembled with freshly painted number plates and LED indicators and DRLs The finished product
  2. New headlights arrived from Japan, fitted into refurbished mounts with cleaned mounting ring and new screws. With relays fitted to the headlight circuit, this should be a huge improvement in light output.
  3. Work slowly continues on the starlet, lots of little jobs being done when time allows. Bumper brackets are currently being sandblasted & the warm weather we are experiencing in Wellington certainly helps with getting the paint to dry. I’ll be going with a black interior so I started to paint some of the trim. First a wash in warm soapy water then a spray with plastic and vinyl paint Have also spent way too long on rhdjapan.com lately and my first lot of parts arrived. Some ARP bolts for the engine and a Cusco strut brace. The colour of the mount is fairly close to the colour I’ll be painting the car so that’s a little win.
  4. A couple of hours of sand blasting and then a soak in CRC Evapo-Rust and the first parts are almost ready for their first coat of primer.
  5. Time to get back into this project. I brought myself a sand blasting cabinet from Supercheap, have been playing around with the nozzles and air pressure. 100psi certainly gets paint and rust off components but is probably at the limit for my 50l 2hp compressor.
  6. As part of the rebuild I’ll be getting rid of the tan/ brown interior. I’ve always liked the look of flocked dashboards so I brought a kit and decided to try my hand at some flocking. I started with the instrument panel cover as a test piece, not perfect but not to bad. Needs a few little touch ups but coverage turned out fairly even. I think I’ll spay the rest of the dash black before I flock it as the tan can show through a little of the coating is a bit light. The flocking makes one hell of a mess so you need a big tarp and clear space to work.
  7. The car is slowly been stripped down for body work and paint and this is the only structural rust found so far. Previous repairs at the tip of the C pillar (both sides) Hole in the side of the scuttle panel Hole in in the top corner of the tail lights (both sides)
  8. So not much has happened with this car over the last few years, hopefully soon it will get some love lavished on it. I found some cheap LED indicators and DRLs on The Market and with some slight modifications they fit the KP60 bumper perfectly.
  9. Had one of these around 2005/2006, awesome vehicles. Awesome work with the head lining.
  10. Cost of a New Starlet in 1981
  11. Finally I brought a welder, just to confirm that my welding is still sh!t. Welded up the holes left behind by the self tapping screws used to mount the mud flaps to the front guards.
  12. I also brought a set of 13x5.5 hot wires. Not to sure if I will keep them black or go for gold.
  13. Wow long time no post. haven’t done a whole lot on the car over the last couple of years, but will post up some photos of the small progress. rebuilt the front brake calipers as they were seized and the pads were almost non -existent. Also replaces the front rotors as they were under minimum thickness, ended up getting a set of 233mm discs machined down to 203mm, they will do until I get around to a brake upgrade
  14. My uncle brough a GTO new. One of the first in New Zealand and the first in Wellington. He confirmed to me that the claimed top speed of 111mph was infact correct, as they achieved this on the western side of Lake Taupo late on night.
  15. Nothing flash, just a cable tie holder. Used 50mm tubing and the end caps are screwed to the wood so I can add additional tubes if required.
