  1. Pictureless update…., first stage of break in complete. free revved in the recommended rev range for about 1in, then took it down the road , up in the revs then let it engine brake back down, rinse repeat. did this for about 10mins, then took it out on the open roads, doing the same but with up to 5-7psi. Temps were perfect, no noises or vibrations. full test session was around 40mm or so. time to drop the oil and change the filter. then I’ll get the timing checked again. from what I’ve read online (probably the 50th version) , I’ll chuck the new oil and filly in and do approx 500km varying on and off power, 75-100% throttle up to 75% of expected rev range. hope that’s right haha but goddam this thing will be fun, it’s so fun to throw through corners. brakes need work though, I don’t think they have been bed in correctly or bled up.
  2. Is it normal for an exhaust housing if a turbo to be glowing after 10mins boost at 5-7psi? is it an indication of incorrect timing/mixture?
  3. Chur bro. got it back together. Got some oil psi’s happening. Fired up instantly. still has lifter tick. So let it get to temp, no change. Then swapped out for the new lifters, fired up and became much smoother. no leaks anywhere. Just burning residue off the turbo manifold. now I need to sort out where I can fit all the necessary sensors so I can monitor its bowels. oil pressure oil temp water temp intake temp boost exhaust temp fuel pressure
  4. Picked up the GTR head from Franklin engineering, it looks brand new again. I decided to bolt the intake on before fitting the head it’s a c—t getting my mitts in the back to get the nuts on. Started putting everything back together, plugs, hoses, cams and lifters. even got the turbski on. not much left to do for a fire up. have been told to just buy cheap mineral oil for initial start up and break in. there’s loads of conflicting info out there in break in procedures .
  5. Dropped the block in the bay on Saturday, pulled it out… realised the driveshaft bracket was not going to play game. Reset it. Reinstalled the block. then had a hmmmm… didn’t recall seeing a pilot bearing installed or supplied. out of the 3 engines, nothing. found out it’s fitted to the flywheel. sourced one from my local BNT, $11 later. She’s back in the hole. got the starter and alt fitted up along with most of the back side of the bay. It’s a real C—T to get in there with the manifold on. hopefully the head will be done this week.
  6. Got shown a photo of the car during the 2008 Tauranga clubman’s rally, driven by Natalie Wise. quite possibly the last person to get it moving on the clock.
  7. Dropped the head off to Franklin Engineering today. Acid clean, strip, deck and lap dance coming up haha
  8. Got the bottom end together. hopefully it’ll go all good. just need to get the head sorted now. also found out that these came out with a big and small nose crank. Great. I fitted the mint big nose crank, got it together and realised it didn’t have the pulleys with it. Ffs, strip it down and fit the small nose crank.
  9. I haven’t looked into turbo upgrades, I’ve heard Subaru stuff is used I’d love to see a lower lip on a gtr bumper
  10. Got given a falcon intercooler for this. I find the gtx one to be tiny, with the possibility for the intake duct to fill with crap pretty quickly. It fits inside the bumper really well. mounting will be a breeze. piping will be very straight forward aswell. The upper pipe will run across to a 90 just under the headlight and a straight run to the intake, will get a Bov fitted to this pipe too. I/c intake will run out to a hump/void in the front panel, and will go up and over the gearbox crossmember into the turbo. pretty straight forward. engine news: git the block onto the engine stand today ready for assembly. only waiting on ring pliers and ring compressor to make a start on this.
  11. Many thoughts crossed my mind when I saw gloves, towels and first aid kit im surprised it’s so intact.
  12. It’s nice, good size … picked up the block from Franklin engineering. had it honed, tanked and decked, flushed galleries etc. it’s rebuild time!!! still need to strip the head to get that checked, cleaned, decked, lapped.
  13. Goodies have arrived. got the block in at franklin engineering getting a deck, clean and hone. all the bearings , rings and thrust washers are ready to go. will get the bottom end back together. Then send the head in for a look at and valve lap.
  14. I got some stuffs from STA Parts. STD size mains and big ends, thrust washers, timing belt, tensioner and idler, and STD Hastings rings. stripped down engine #3, the one that was in the car. destroyed the timing pulley in the process. Got 2 spare so oops.. bores look good, crank is mint. oil around the bearings etc smells burnt as hell. bearings look fine. I’ll use this block, might send it in to get honed and ring gaps done. maybe even get the bottom end assembled yet. See how I feel after a quote. ideally I’d like to strip the head and have the valves lapped. stuff I know I’ve done before. Just need to man up and go full send on it. same with the bottom end. not sure about the oil pump, do I get it inspected/tested?
  15. Started building my trailer while I wait for parts to arrive. only doing a 4mx1.95m deck. will be a tandem with ramps and tyre rack.
  16. Kind of stuck at a standstill with this at the moment. im ready to rebuild but no one will get back to me about parts. so if any of you work in a parts dept and can price up and supply the following: piston rings std, mains std, big ends std, HG, gaskets/seals hook us up so I can get my slide on.
  17. Get out and run ya bast@rd
  18. Is it worth trying to put the best pistons from the other 2 motors into the 3rd? haha cheapo
  19. All pistons are in a similar state of munched
  20. Might be time for forged pistons. can get a set of CP pistons for $1200 or so full forgery kit for around $2800, that’s eagle/manly h beam rods, arp head studs and mains, acl bearings and a gates belt and HG. fair bit of spendy stuff. may consider selling off the project hunter and 4age to focus on this more , aswell as rebuilding the 12a. 3 project cats are a bit on the enthusiastic side.
  21. We’ll bugger. Engine number 3 needs pistons too. something has entered this one too. I’ve looked at the spooly stu stu stuuuu maker and it’s fine. Although loads of oil in the exhaust side. found a piece of metal sitting on number 2 piston. anyone got any leads on replacement pistons?
  22. Haha all this talk of salty and over head. picked up said salty head today. started pulling the head off the existing engine. decided I want to inspect the pistons in this one too. plus tidy a few other things up, put a fresh HG on it with the salty head. check the turbo out etc
  23. Have ordered up a set of replacement HLAs (hydraulic lash adjusters) for this. coming from Aussie. NZ has nothing, no parts departments know what the hell they are. also have a GTR head to pick up locally.
  24. So I kind of went too full on with the throwbacks this year. not only acquiring a set of recaro fishnets and a stainless dumpy for the rotor conversion. I seemed to have impulse purchased myself a 89 bg8 Mazda gtx hatch, but in Rallycar steez. the body is immaculate condition, with a very well built cage, terratrip and terraphone already set up. 3 sets of rims and tyres and 2 spare motors and a host of other bits. score right???? well the car was sold with some “ lifter noise”. ok sure, that’s fine. I decided to pull the spare motors apart. motor 1 “run bottom end”… missing all lifters, hmmm. Head off for a look. Oh boy, pistons are umm smoked, ring lands are awol. bottom end however is mint. Block could be saved with a light hone, head has some heavy combustion chamber damage. To the parts shelf it goes. motor 2 “rebuilt motor but has lifter noise”…. missing lifters also, Dafuq. head off, wow looks like shit has gone through the motor aswell. Bottom end also mint. Could actually use these bearings aswell. motor 3 “ in the car, runs but lifter noise”. hla’s have lots of play. Pulled the sump to inspect. Bottom end is tight and super clean. No crap in the pan bar a small amount of sludge build up. turbo exhaust side has a fair amount of oil residue in there. I will replace all lifters in this motor and test it out. It starts so good, does die out because some numpty has cut the intake pipe too short to fit the restrictor, and isn’t sealing. False afm reading I guess. car has new discs and pads fitted. savage gauges, yup they’ll go straight to the bin. new alloy radiator too, full width dealio. new Silverster Hans spec belts and some sick stickers bro. Love the fit of the Racetech seats too. plans: sort the lifters etc, get it running like a boss. gain by msnz license finally and get an authority card. hopefully find a spare gearbox for it. go full send on some club stuff.
