So today I got cracked in the head buy a rampaging concrete drill as I was making a big hole is a wall. Got sent to the Doctor and he said go home an rest, but don't go to sleep.
My standard mode set so if I stop and simply lounge around 8/10 times I will have a nap. So I decided to make a start on the truck.
a set of fusion component speakers arrived this week. just 58 delivered of the tard.
out with the old and in with the new.
when j pulled the door panels off I found all but 2 clips wer missing or broken. luckily I brought a a bag random clips off ali. will be very handy.
boring pic but I'm stoked the door is back togeather and the rattles are gone
Got a cheap $30 radio offAli. Found a 24_12v reducer under the dash. good to have but the radio I got is 24v so pulled the reducer hoping it may stop my battery drain issues.

A few months ago I got a isuzu elf to cart my blast equipment.
It was filthy and was in worked in condition. PO was a drain layer and he carted his digger and stuff around.
in its life before that it was a mcentee hire truck.
it's got a bad paint job that's cracked and ugly. a few small dents and knocks.
the interior is filthy with almost every clip broken ,stereo is kaput and the floor mats torn.
Tail lift stopped working not long after I got it.
Business is slow and I would like to present the best image possiable. Having a mobile billboard cant harm things.
So I have set aside some time to tart the old girl up.
I'm just wanting it to look presentable so if I pull up on site, driving down the road the truck and I look like a professional company.
I dropped it at my neighbour's paint shop for a quick spray, but he found the whole truck is covered in cracks, he stopped work and told me to strip it.
I started thinking I could wrap it. I got some cheap vinyl and gave it a go on some various panels and did not have much luck after many hours of you tube videos and giving it a go I decided that I would not ever be happy with the result.
So the plan is now a cheap paint job my self.
Get some signage printed
remove and clean the interior and replace misting clips.
ali Express radio
ali alarm
new LED lights
new tail lift pump
install racking and covers.
I have almost every thing I need.
now I need good weather. .

I'll post up some photos of the blasted motor once I'm done !

your problem is going to be removing the chrome. get hold of a chrome place and ask if they can strip them for you. then polish or paint.

list given at last COF.
The last COF the truck had was dated 17 Nov'17, and expired 17 May'18. Items written on the Nov'17 COF inspection sheet to watch/improve for next COF were:1. Left front steering king-pin play developing, requires attention soon.2. All wheel cylinder stoke length adjustment required....(I think this was for brake pedal travel).3. All deck sideboard missing.......(this was for 2 short deck sideboards that we removed, but hadn't removed the hinge pins).4. Left rear cab mounts deteriorating - (one) bolt on x-member loose.5. Rear drive shaft slip joint wearing, requires attention soon.6. Right front seat belt webbing damaged, borderline.7. All windscreen wiper rubbers deteriorating, requires attention soon. -
any feed back on this?
wheel base could cause me issues but I do have 100m of blast hose so could get around this.
he is sending me the list for the cof. at its last COF he was given a list of things to do before its next inspection. so it's not in the system as having failed.
this is stressing me out.

any clues as to what a gear box repair would cost in something this size?

Could be...
Sounds more like a worn shift fork, or busted roll pin to the shift fork.
Could knock the price down?
yeah I'm going to offer a low ball because of the issue and see what they say.

it grinds
20 hours ago, Dolan said:weird about the grinding situation. so it's not a synchro grind, just a grinding noise when you take off?
it grinds like ghe gear is not fully engaged. it won't move just grinds. but will go from first to second when on the move fine.
I'm gutted as the truck is in real good condition an most other aspects. the interior is mint. all buttons in place and still working. and it's in my price range.
have thought about getting it inspected by a mechanic to see if it's something simple like a gear linkage

That one will be idling behind the tractors mowing berms and trimming shelter belts.
yeah has not thought of that.

I just took the curtain side for a drive, real nice unit, in far better condition than the others, 12500 as it's been there a while
but it grinds 2nd when trying to start in 2nd. if you start in first it's not a problem, but moving off in 2nd grinds

I was also looking at this.
80km less and as it was a treescape truck I was hoping it would have driven to site then parked while the trees were being scaped rather than doing road works etc.

I'm open to any thing but the budget is only small as this us an unexpected expense and things have been slow getting off the ground. but if I don't I can't work.

Those gearboxes and power plants are solid as. I wouldn’t buy that truck as the gearbox will be tired and the motor will smoke like a bastard due to idling hours.
Thats an import one too you can’t beat an nz new one.
if you get a 7 speed and the gearbox gives any issues fix it ASAP as they’re expensive when they blow to bits and hard to find secondhand l. Six speed are heading the Same way. Great gearboxes though. You want to steer clear of 9 speed zf boxes coz those are stupid money but they’re in stuff with a “23” or some late model “34” chassis vehicles (those two numbers after the model)
so I'm better off getting this?

6 speed 7 speed or 8 speed with the flick of the wrist between low and high - trying to remember which one is the gearbox to avoid ? Think it was the 7 that has some issues
Downers are not too bad on fleet maintenance but being an stms truck it has probably idled for as many hours as been driven
most isuzus trucks are reliable and simple and kinda comfy
pay attention to wheelbase vs usable size - long wheelbase may be a bitch around city and into/ out of tight site access
please have a think and let me know about the box. could be an expensive event if needed.

I've driven tow trucks that likely shared an engine, they were a similar size. Never had an issue with the engine. The gearbox on one of them may have had some issues but it was user error I believe.
@Dolanmight have an insight though.
good to know time in the seat is important feed back to get.

ok so the sarga continues
I got a little isuzu elf. 7 ton with a tail lift. hoes hard for what it is and all that.
but I things have changed, bigger equipment than the initial plan has meant that I have quickly out grown the little yellow beast and i need to move up to a bigger unit.
I'm looking at a 1995 isuzu forward from turners. ex downers traffic control truck 11800kg gmv.
it's got the 6he1 turbo intercooled motor. currently has 326xxxkm on the clock.
has any one got any experience with these?
should I stay clear or are they good. I don't do massive ks. mostly the greater Auckland area to site then back to base.
I'm planning on taking it for a vca. hope this points out any flaws and points to watch.
thoughts and experience

top work so far.
I have the original starter out of that car you could of had if I had known.
also i find a 9mm and a 11mm socket work very well on those bolts. i have also got a e torx set for those bolts now. but prior to that I have removed 3 boxes at pick a part with a long extension shambles similar to yours and a 11mm socket

They'd probably accept garden hose going by the trailers I see on the road. Perhaps just sleeve it in some electrical duct so it can't rub?
I'm thinking about sleeving it in garden hose inside the draw bar.

trailer question.
brake line down the inside of draw bar or p clip every 300mm.
tha is in advance

I just brought a air feed blasting helmet.
helmet, cartridge filter, breathing lines has cost me about $1900. the helmet was a large chunk about 1100 all up inc gst. so yeah not cheap, but the filter and.lines would be the same if feeding a painting hood.

Visibility in the new hilux cab plus (or whatever it is called, two main seats + 2 small seat things in back) is not the best. Looking over your shoulder to check left/back just gives you a view of pillars. B pillar is too big and back corner window is too small. This could potentially be a safety issue
more like a pain in the air than a safety issue. many many Van's and trucks have no visibility out the back. they still manage it ok
