  1. My car will be un-drivable during this period due engine and drivetrain swap (all going to plan). Will make the next one forshore!
  2. Good read, I pick up my adjustable panhard rod next week. Will have a better idea what to look for after reading this. Your wag looks badss by the way.
  3. So......another question. Since I have changed sumps from the HQ to the Commy style I have a dipstick issue. The old 9 port dipstick hole in the block is postioned aft and I will no longer get an accurate reading on the stick (after I chop it down so it will seal). What do I do about that? I know I could get two elbows brased into the sump and run a clear tube beteen them.......but that seems like too much effort and I have already fitted and sealed the sump. Most 202's I have seen leak oil (some more than others) so I am pretty keen to have the ability to check the oil level between oil changes. Please tell me I dont have to take it off again!
  4. Cheers man, its on my build thread now. Its the nicest 202 ive seen in the flesh......but not on google
  5. Cheers, Sorry about that. Was going through the motions of moving it myself...... beat me to it.
  6. So......had a few things in real life that required my attention this month so progress was slower than i originaly hoped for. Here are the before and afters of my mighty 202 after a dry fit tonight. I am really stoked with the final product and cant wait to fit her. I have never had a nice looking motor before and this being my first project, all the nights working untill 2am in my opinion have been well worth it. Not 100% about the airfilter but a top hat wont fit as it will hit the rocker cover. This was just one I had lying around. Will most likely source a new shiney version of the triange or maybe an oval one. Running graer looks mint too. ....... fist pumping like a boss! Before... ........and after. Disregard the funny looking breather ports and oil cap hole. Its just alley tape I havent peeled off yet as I resprayed the cover and ran a 340grit over her.
  7. Extractors have been painted and are in the oven, will be ready tomorrow. Will paint the motor this weekend and maybe look at the front and rear disc conversion. Should be fitting the shiney bits next week and will be ready for install....... just need to make a date that will work for helpers.......assuming I can find some! Another side project ive been working on with a friend of mine. we have gutted an old school tape player and fitted the inside with a bluetooth reciever running to RCA's that will in turn run to an amp. Have jigged it so when I insert a tape it fires up the bluetooth. The radio is still functional too. Should help keep the whole int looking stock and give me hands free as well as wireless beats. All up it has cost $75 (got a bargin sony amp for $50). Needed the amp as the old ass stereo had 2x7W output lol.
  8. Good news! I got the motor (fist pump).Am 99% sure that it is a Yella terra head, but it certainly has alloy timing gear and been recently rebuilt. A friend and I (with a lil help of heineken) worked past midnight and ripped off all the parts less rocker cover, stripped and cleaned it back to bear metal in prep for paint. All I have to do is fit the front oil pickup, replace the crank seal and crank pulley, re gasket and it will time to paint. Bloody stoked! Everything about this motor is adding up as it has been disassembled too. It was insanley clean behind the timing cover and up in around the mains and crank. There is no movement on the crank, cam looks clean and undamaged, timing gear looks new. Oil in the engine is nice (no globs of poop or bad smell). The head has the dowels in the intake ports as well as them being pollished. Took a peek and she has dual valve springs too. That paired with the higher compression of 10bar opposed to 8.8 from factory all point towards it anyway. I wont bother taking the head off to check the valve stems as the gasket is good and I kinda cant be arsed. With regard to the oil pickup......seems interesting that the commy mount is too the No3 main..... but ahh well...what do I know? Also when putting the crank pulley back on, do you just give it a tap with a dead mallet? Anyway....hopefully the next pic I put up will be of it painted and fully dressed prior to sawp day. My course starts in Jan so the clock is ticking.
  9. Compression tested it today with a solid 10 on all six cylinders. It was nice and quite with no rattles or dodgy sounds. Oil was clean as and didnt smell burnt or stinky. He rekons he swaped out the timing gear with an alloy set when he rebuilt it.....will see once its out. Unfortunately we were unable to get it out today but have it scheduled in for removal this sunday. I told the guy that I would take it as soon as we confirm the head. We will do that when we remove it from the belmont seeing as though we will remove the manifolds then anyway. A good sign is that he told me what to look for i.e Dowels in the ports, polished ports and YT on the valve stems......so he seems legit, due to the fact if I dont see that when we remove it he has wasted his sunday morning. I couldnt test the oil pump but I have one from my buggard black one that works well that I can swap out if need be. Ill also have the alloy timing gear, est disy etc as spares. Im guessing all that I will have to do is put my sump and ring gear on it after I have removed the flywheel....... clean, gasket and paint. So he wants $400 for the motor, carb, redline inlet manifold, power steering pump and headders. Not too bad im thinking.
  10. Yeah will do, those links you put up were very helpful. Ill start with the manifolds and if I see the difference in ports, I may keep the head as it is.......If not, ill dig a bit deeper.
  11. Cheers fellas, Apprently the guy got it going today. So I have sourced a guage and will compression test it as well as listen for anything dodgy tomorrow. When I first saw it, i checked the crank pulley movement and couldnt feel any horozonal movement so its got one up on my old black motor. The guy rekons he rebuilt it 70,000kms ago and is digging up recipts. He has also agreed for me to take it home to remove some parts to make sure its A. all good and B. so I can maybe confirm if the head is legit. Will keep yall posted on progress.
  12. will try it out tomorrow. the carb looks like it needs a refresh.....
  13. OK, so I may have found a suitable 202 candidate for the slx. Its a red 202 with a yella terra head, holley 2 barrel and headders. Its misssing a disy and alternator (no prob for me) but it is nicley dressed with chrome side, rocker and oil pump covers. I know the shiney dont really matter but its a nice lil perk. I cant see it running as it is still in a rusty old belmont. My question is this......what would you guys reccomend as things to check before handing over the notes? My thoughts are that you arnt really going to know untill you open it up if its not running.....is that pretty much right? I will be able to sell off the headders, head, carb and shiney bits to get my money back if it turns out that its stuffed, but would rather set myself up to get a goodie and bypass all the wheeling a dealing if I could. Any tips would be ace.
  14. Cheers 3oat, I have PM'd the deats. Stoked that it comes with a trans, especially if Cletus is on to something. Ill have heaps of spares too ie oil pump, disy, thermostat housings etc....will be chicken dinner if its a goa. Bloody legend!
  15. I was looking at that black one with trans for $350 3oat, I have spoken to the guy today about it and he is sending me some pics tomorrow. It sounds like it could be OK, he said that it could be seen going and that it was still in a car if I wanted to arrage someone to view it. So $350 inc trans seems like a good price. Plus this it is the "heavy duty" trans that came with the injected ones too......might be better than the one I have? I am in the Air force and often have friends making the trip to Ohakea. So all i need is to get it to Whenuapai and ill be able to arrange for it to get down no prob. The guy is in Ranui..... am currently calling in a few favors too see if I can get someone out there.....That knows anything about motors, will see how i go. 3oat, where are you in Auckland? is Ranui very far from your place of abode? You are a bloody generous man with your time for someone you dont even know.......i would like to buy you a beer some time.
  16. Cheers for the offers of help and investigation fellas, I am hunting the interwed for a 12 port 202 like the clappers.... Thanks three on a tree for the bargin offer on the red! For now i might try a short hunt for a 12 port, mainly due to the carb, intake and exhaust setup I have patently waiting to be installed. I cant muck around too long though as I need this in by xmas. Will take you up on the offer for red if I have no luck. Shakotom, that would be great. As far as price, just ask him what he wants. Trademe seems to ebb and flow with regard to price. When i was hunting at the start (three months ago), $300 brought you a nice running blue with headders, but this week most want $400 for a red long block.
  17. Oh and another thing about my black motor. I found heaps of hard plastic in my sump........turns out that it was my old timing gear. The motor has alley timing gear on it now, but the rough buggers didnt even give it an oil change or clean it out once it ate the old nylon set. So maybe they are kinda bullet proof...just this one took an RPG to the face!
  18. Hmmmm....... I cant seem to find it. I can see a guy who wants $1K just for a head though. Was just lookin into what i can do with regard to red and black hybrids. Looks like it can be done
  19. Cheers mate...thats awesome! I start a pretty intense course in Jan and was hoping to have this all done and dusted by xmas so I can focus on that. This bump in the road has the potential to mess with those plans. I take it that its a red one? Already thinking of if my manifolds etc will fit it. I should get the quote back for the rebuild next week. Part of me is tempted if its not too crazy. Im thinking if i was to build it medium spec it will probably be good for decades....but im pretty sure the cost wont be worth it fuel/power/effortwise. Thanks again
  20. Major stumbling block today! Everything is prept, painted and ready for installation except for my motor! when I stripped the motor I noticed a fair bit of play in my crank shaft. Checked the book and found the max play on the horozontal axis is around 0.28mm.........I have at least 4mm. The investigation begins, Caps off.....bugger! Mains down to the copper, thrust coozed, cam lobes scored, and two pistons move up and down waaaay too easy and still need to measure the crank.......F*&K! So looks like im up for a complete rebuild or roll the dice and source another 202. So if anyone out there knows of a good 202 at a good price let me know. Have sent out for the quote for the rebuild and am pretty sure she is gunna be waaay outta my budget. So gutted as I would have been doing the re gasket and paint of the motor this weekend. Was all geared up for a labour day weekend swap of motor, trans, diff, discs, suspension, power steering and the fitting of the new wheels proptly followed up by skids.......boo!!
  21. So, everything is out of my donor car except the diff, rear discs, rear hubs etc. Will have that squared away sometime next week. Motor and trans have been steam cleaned and wire wheeled and is now ready for a re gasket and paint. Will take the rear diff assembly and the K frame complete with power steering rack, front discs etc to work to get them steam cleaned. Will drop a few bits and bobs inc front and rear disc callipers into the Paragon bath.......then boom POR15 time. Have brought new low King springs, water pump and thermostat housing, Holley 350cfm carb, free flow manifold, trans service kit and engine mounts, so once all my shit is clean.......it will be swap time, cant wait!! Oh and I just picked these up today. Brought them from a funeral home. They had been on one of their hearses but they decided to "upgrade". It's pretty cool to know that people are dying to go for a ride on these rims.......Ba dom chhh! Once all this is on, it will be time to tweak the cosmetics. Will fit the rear fender and tail light extensions as well as the tacho from my donor car. Then i think i will stop there and see if I want to proceede any further. Will most likely leave it there...
