Alright. All those people that get upset about Harleys close your eyes for a second.

New sportster looks decent (aside from the pipe size of course). Finally they're stepping into the modern world in more than just one model. The new engine is 1250cc, and has 30HP more than their 1868cc air cooled 114ci engine. Which is kinda funny considering that was their top dog in the production bike apart from the bigger crate motors (which still didn't make 120HP).

Will I buy one? As usual with brand new bikes. Nope. But it'll be interesting to see how it's received long term. More HP and lighter than the Indian scout. Finally 6 gears too!

    Whats your initial thoughts?

    2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S

Decent article here for specs etc:  https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/2021-harley-davidson-sportster-s-first-look

I think these are pretty fucking beautiful, and am also stocked they are getting up with the times on bikes other than the pan America, they can still make aircompressors, but need models that will compete with other stuff on the market, this is the way forward.

The pipes hurt my eyes, so bad, im guessing there will be plenty of aftermarket options. I like that they are twin high's, just need more of an oldschool scrambler type style to them maybe.

  2. Let’s be honest the group splits into multiple packs anyway. We are only riding 250s, there has been 250s before.

The main reason we are doing it is because we wanted to make a big trip of it clocking up 1000km+ on the way there and back. I’ve done cape every year on a different small (sub 140) bike every time. The only bikes in my stable suitable for it now are the trombone, which isn’t suitable as it falls to bits on gravel (Mitch can attest to this on our last gravel Hawke’s bay ride) and the next smallest is the xr250. We are all going self sufficient and camping so will be lugging a shit load more gear than everyone else, so it won’t be a dramatic difference. My XR is only happy at 90kmh on the open road anyway.

I really need to sort out getting mine in the system before its too difficult later this year. Just so goddamn time and money poor these days. I wholeheartedly endorse your activities

sell xr100 to fund compliance! def worth getting done. Mitch is in the process of  getting his 1990 250r complied.

  4. Took the bike on a 3400km trip around the south island for the brass monkey, great times were had and the bike ran well.

Seems to be a tad rich judging by residue on fairing behind tail pipe, need to investigate potential choke issue. Other problem is bad engine vibes relating to throttle position. Dissapears when clutch is in so not running gear etc and def engine. seems to be related more to throttle opening rather than revs. I synced the carbs at tickover as manual suggests but im wondering if there is an imbalance when the butterflys are opened more than 1/3rd ish. Will play around more and see if i can get it better, still ran good, just not as good as it should.

That is cool, good to see the bike and the build getting the attention and respect it deserves.

The way the article is written and how it repeats itself over and over kills me though.  I assume the writer grew up watching Dora.

yea its weird, he sent me a questionnaire to fill out, and seems to have written the article using the questionnaire , but then also just slapped it on the end of it...

  6. yea the oxford ones aren't that thick but i too had trouble with the superglue. i listened to the internet and used gorilla glue as its rated for heaps of heat and expands as it dries so makes a real tight fit. just need to cut them off when the wear. The sportbike ones that you have are the same as mine, they do actually wear quite quick but all the other designs were too long for my bike.
